It is designed to illustrate the ethnic and graphic diversity of our state so students can identify with the content. It is colorful and includes lively graphics and photos. This civics textbook describes the history of Washington state, how our government was developed and how current state, local and tribal governments function. It includes the impact of the early explorers, how tribes governed themselves pre contact and the transformation from a territory to a state. The Century of of Change chapter is about the years1900-2000 and how the increase in population, changes in transportation, the need for more roads, etc. affected governments. Local and state governments each have a separate chapter. Tribal government today describes how our 29 Federally recognized tribes govern themselves and how they interact with state and local governments. What's Next for Washington looks at the need to plan far into the future and develop a sustainability plan for growth, land use, water and more. The 8th chapter, Civics and the Natural world discusses the role of government in protecting, or not protecting the land, air and water for all of its inhabitants...including wild creatures. A companion teacher's curriculum guide is being developed by expert teachers and will include the current academic standards. The book and the teacher's guide will be posted online.
