Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We believe that civics education should inspire all students to be active, informed citizens. This book does. It is designed to illustrate the ethnic and graphic diversity of our state so students can identify with the content. It is colorful and includes lively graphics and photos. This civics textbook describes the history of Washington state, how our government was developed and how current state, local and tribal governments function. It includes the impact of the early explorers, how tribes governed themselves pre contact and the transformation from a territory to a state. The Century of of Change chapter is about the years1900-2000 and how the increase in population, changes in transportation, the need for more roads, etc. affected governments. Local and state governments each have a separate chapter. Tribal government today describes how our 29 Federally recognized tribes govern themselves and how they interact with state and local governments. What's Next for Washington looks at the need to plan far into the future and develop a sustainability plan for growth, land use, water and more. The 8th chapter, Civics and the Natural world discusses the role of government in protecting, or not protecting the land, air and water for all of its inhabitants...including wild creatures. A companion teacher's curriculum guide is being developed by expert teachers and will include the current academic standards. The book and the teacher's guide will be posted online.

Book excerpt: This is about more than geographical location of Maine, and certainly is not a picture postcard of the coastal state. Some characters have arrived by accident, others are trying to get out. The collection opens, closes, and is interlaced with stories that focus on Jocelyn, a wryly disaffected teenager living with her aunt and uncle while attending summer school. As in life, the narratives of other characters interrupt Jocelyn's, sometimes challenging, sometimes embellishing her view. --Publisher.
