Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly a quarter of Western Australia's population is made up of children and young people under the age of 18 and they contribute enormously to our State.Young people have important ideas about want they want to see in their lives, how they wish to be treated and what change is needed. It is my job to help their voices be recognised and heard. In marking my office's fifteenth anniversary, I wanted to showcase the incredible stories of children and young people who are making a difference in their communities. In my discussions across the State, I hear many inspiring stories of children and young people who are helping shape their schools, towns and wider communities. Many have shown great courage in the face of adversity, and it is these experiences which have often driven them to want to make the world a better place for others. This booklet celebrates just a handful of stories of everyday leaders who are making an impact in their communities.I hope these stories will inspire others to take action towards their goals, no matter how big or small. Whether it be to help others, start something new, or decide to speak up, everyone can play a part.Thank you to all fifteen children and young people for allowing us to share their personal stories.Jacqueline McGowan-JonesCommissioner for Children and Young People

Book Child Protection and the Care Continuum

Download or read book Child Protection and the Care Continuum written by Elizabeth Fernandez and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new book critically examines the complex policy and practice issues surrounding child protection, including the impact of theoretical orientations, contemporary debates, policy initiatives and research findings, and maintains an emphasis on the ethics and values underpinning child welfare interventions. The book introduces policies that are central to understanding the position and needs of children and young people, and how policy and practice have been influenced by developments including the children’s rights agenda. It also explores the most significant issues in child welfare. These include: the experience of maltreatment by children, the systems of child protection to safeguard them, the methods and challenges of risk assessment, and the wide range of policy and therapeutic interventions to respond to children’s needs. The book also examines family support to promote children’s wellbeing before considering provision for children and young people who are looked after in out-of-home care. There is also a final section that focuses on best practice in communicating and working with children and young people, drawing on participatory, rights-oriented and resilience-based approaches, and supporting foster and adoptive carers and biological parents. Contributing in a substantive and clear manner to a growing international conversation about the present function and future directions for child welfare in contemporary societies, this textbook will be of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate social work students and those from allied disciplines, and professionals who are engaged in child welfare services.

Book Australia s Children s Courts Today and Tomorrow

Download or read book Australia s Children s Courts Today and Tomorrow written by Rosemary Sheehan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-05 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Children’s Court is one of society’s most important social institutions. At the same time, it is steeped in controversy. This is in large measure due to the persistence and complexity of the problems with which it deals, namely, juvenile crime and child abuse and neglect. Despite the importance of the Children’s Court as a means of holding young people accountable for their anti-social behaviour and parents for the care of their children, it has not been the subject of close study. Certainly it has not been previously studied nationally. This book, an edited collection, is based on the findings of study that spanned the six States and two Territories of Australia. The study sought to examine the current challenges faced by the Children’s Court and to identify desirable and feasible directions for reform in each State and Territory. A further unique feature of this study is that it canvassed the views of judges and magistrates who preside over this court.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents high level recommendations by the Commissioner for Children and Young People on how the government can help address vulnerability in children young people in Western Australia. Though many children and young people are faring well, there are many facing such issues as violence, abuse and neglect, mental illness, disability or chronic health problems, and alcohol and drug use. No single risk factor on its own causes vulnerability and poor outcomes, so strategies to address vulnerability must respond to the multiple risks and exposures to harm whilst also building protective factors and resilience. The recommendations draw on the findings of a forums with government, service providers, practitioners, researchers, and Aboriginal Elders.

Book Young People and Social Media Contemporary Children s Digital Culture

Download or read book Young People and Social Media Contemporary Children s Digital Culture written by Steve Gennaro and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Young People and Social Media: Contemporary Children’s Digital Culture’ explores the practices, relationships, consequences, benefits, and outcomes of children’s experiences with, on, and through social media by bringing together a vast array of different ideas about childhood, youth, and young people’s lives. These ideas are drawn from scholars working in a variety of disciplines, and rather than just describing the social construction of childhood or an understanding of children’s lives, this collection seeks to encapsulate not only how young people exist on social media but also how their physical lives are impacted by their presence on social media. One of the aims of this volume in exploring youth interaction with social media is to unpack the structuring of digital technologies in terms of how young people access the technology to use it as a means of communication, a platform for identification, and a tool for participation in their larger social world. During longstanding and continued experience in the broad field of youth and digital culture, we have come to realize that not only is the subject matter increasing in importance at an immeasurable rate, but the amount of textbooks and/or edited collections has lagged behind considerably. There is a lack of sources that fully encapsulate the canon of texts for the discipline or the rich diversity and complexity of overlapping subject areas that create the fertile ground for studying young people’s lives and culture. The editors hope that this text will occupy some of that void and act as a catalyst for future interdisciplinary collections. ‘Young People and Social Media: Contemporary Children’s Digital Culture’ will appeal to undergraduate students studying Child and Youth Studies and—given the interdisciplinary nature of the collection— scholars, researchers and students at all levels working in anthropology, psychology, sociology, communication studies, cultural studies, media studies, education, and human rights, among others. Practitioners in these fields will also find this collection of particular interest.

Download or read book Orphans of the Living written by Joanna Penglase and published by Fremantle Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 2004, Parliamentary senators wept as they presented Forgotten Australians, the report from the Senate Inquiry into the treatment of children in care. Half a million children grew up in 'care' in twentieth-century Australia, and most often these children lived with daily brutal physical and emotional abuse in the sterile environment of an institution. In Orphans of the Living, drawing from interviews, submissions to the Senate Inquiry, and her own experience, Joanna Penglase describes, for the first time, the experience from the perspective of the survivors. With tenderness, compassion and intellect, Penglase begins to unravel the seemingly inexplicable: how and why did this happen? She looks not only at the profound personal costs to these children, but the huge social and economic costs of these past policies.
