Book Women Class Family and the State

Download or read book Women Class Family and the State written by Varda Burstyn and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this book begin from a concern to understand the relation between patriarchy and capitalism and to come to grips with the dissatisfaction many women feel despite the rhetoric of sexual equality which has become commonplace. Dorothy Smith examines the changing relation between the family and the economy in the context of the capitalist mode of production. Varda Burstyn traces the history of the sexual division of labour in pre-capitalist societies and shows how in industrial societies the state becomes the expression and enforcer of masculine domination.

Book Gendered Paradoxes

Download or read book Gendered Paradoxes written by Amy Lind and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-11-09 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1980s Ecuador has experienced a series of events unparalleled in its history. Its “free market” strategies exacerbated the debt crisis, and in response new forms of social movement organizing arose among the country’s poor, including women’s groups. Gendered Paradoxes focuses on women’s participation in the political and economic restructuring process of the past twenty-five years, showing how in their daily struggle for survival Ecuadorian women have both reinforced and embraced the neoliberal model yet also challenged its exclusionary nature. Drawing on her extensive ethnographic fieldwork and employing an approach combining political economy and cultural politics, Amy Lind charts the growth of several strands of women’s activism and identifies how they have helped redefine, often in contradictory ways, the real and imagined boundaries of neoliberal development discourse and practice. In her analysis of this ambivalent and “unfinished” cultural project of modernity in the Andes, she examines state policies and their effects on women of various social sectors; women’s community development initiatives and responses to the debt crisis; and the roles played by feminist “issue networks” in reshaping national and international policy agendas in Ecuador and in developing a transnationally influenced, locally based feminist movement.

Book Human Development Report 1990

Download or read book Human Development Report 1990 written by United Nations Development Programme and published by Human Development Report. This book was released on 1990 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First in a series of annual reports, this volume is about people and about how development enlarges their choices--access to income, long life, knowledge, political freedom, personal security, community participation, and guaranteed human rights. It measures human development not by the yardstick of income alone, but by the human development index--reflecting life expectancy, literacy and command over resources to enjoy a decent standard of living. The report analyzes the record of human development for the last three decades and the experience of 14 countries in managing economic growth and human development. The volume concludes with human development indicators for more than 130 countries, both developing and developed. ISBN 0-19-306481-X (pbk.): $15.95.

Book The Logics of Gender Justice

Download or read book The Logics of Gender Justice written by Mala Htun and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When and why do governments promote women's rights? Through comparative analysis of state action in seventy countries from 1975 to 2005, this book shows how different women's rights issues involve different histories, trigger different conflicts, and activate different sets of protagonists. Change on violence against women and workplace equality involves a logic of status politics: feminist movements leverage international norms to contest women's subordination. Family law, abortion, and contraception, which challenge the historical claim of religious groups to regulate kinship and reproduction, conform to a logic of doctrinal politics, which turns on relations between religious groups and the state. Publicly-paid parental leave and child care follow a logic of class politics, in which the strength of Left parties and overall economic conditions are more salient. The book reveals the multiple and complex pathways to gender justice, illuminating the opportunities and obstacles to social change for policymakers, advocates, and others seeking to advance women's rights.
