Book excerpt: This document provides an assessment of the current state of the Eastern Scotian Shelf ecosystem. The analysis focusses on time trends in all available data series associated with 3 categories of variables: biotic variables generally include information on the abundance, distribution and composition of finfish and invertebrates, phyto- and zooplankton, and marine mammals; abiotic variables include oceanic and atmospheric data that provide insights into ocean climate conditions; human variables range from fishery landings, fishery revenue, and activities associated with oil and gas development to contaminants. This evaluation uses over 60 data series, most of which extend back to at least 1970.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes a series of workshops held in coastal communities around Nova Scotia on the Eastern Scotian Shelf Integrated Management Initiative. The purpose of the workshops was to expand opportunities for participation in the Initiative and to solicit input on components of the upcoming Integrated Ocean Management Plan. During each workshop, a presentation on the Initiative was followed by feedback from participants on three key topics: the Initiative's planning area, the Integrated Ocean Management Plan, and the collaborative planning model. Issues discussed include the criteria for determining planning area boundaries, the possibility of expanding those boundaries, establishment of integrated management in other areas, flexibility in planning, Plan monitoring & enforcement, and challenges in implementing a collaborative planning model.

Book Ecosystem Based Management for the Oceans

Download or read book Ecosystem Based Management for the Oceans written by Karen McLeod and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-09-26 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional management approaches cannot meet the challenges faced by ocean and coastal ecosystems today. Consequently, national and international bodies have called for a shift toward more comprehensive ecosystem-based marine management. Synthesizing a vast amount of current knowledge, Ecosystem-Based Management for the Oceans is a comprehensive guide to utilizing this promising new approach. At its core, ecosystem-based management (EBM) is about acknowledging connections. Instead of focusing on the impacts of single activities on the delivery of individual ecosystem services, EBM focuses on the array of services that we receive from marine systems, the interactive and cumulative effects of multiple human activities on these coupled ecological and social systems, and the importance of working towards common goals across sectors. Ecosystem-Based Management for the Oceans provides a conceptual framework for students and professionals who want to understand and utilize this powerful approach. And it employs case studies that draw on the experiences of EBM practitioners to demonstrate how EBM principles can be applied to real-world problems. The book emphasizes the importance of understanding the factors that contribute to social and ecological resilience —the extent to which a system can maintain its structure, function, and identity in the face of disturbance. Utilizing the resilience framework, professionals can better predict how systems will respond to a variety of disturbances, as well as to a range of management alternatives. Ecosystem-Based Management for the Oceans presents the latest science of resilience, while it provides tools for the design and implementation of responsive EBM solutions.

Book Research Outside The Academy

Download or read book Research Outside The Academy written by Lisa Börjesson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the practical, information-related dimensions of professional knowledge making and communication in extra-academic organisations. It treats the sites where research takes place and where knowledge is created outside academia in the light, among other things, of new digital resources. It provides valuable insight into the practices through which extra-academic research data and results are produced and made available and the settings in which this takes place. With case studies of knowledge-making in government organizations and state research institutes, as well as in cultural and heritage institutions, this book broadens the perspective on knowledge sharing, communication and publication, and how knowing changes as a result of the professional knowledge-making practices in the digital age. Research outside the Academy is ideal for students at all levels looking for an introduction to the topic of research and knowledge-making in society. Moreover, researchers and professionals in the fields of library and information science and science and technology studies will find the book to be adding to previous understandings of scholarly documentation and communication.
