Book Nonnative Oysters in the Chesapeake Bay

Download or read book Nonnative Oysters in the Chesapeake Bay written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-03-09 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonnative Oysters in the Chesapeake Bay discusses the proposed plan to offset the dramatic decline in the bay's native oysters by introducing disease-resistant reproductive Suminoe oysters from Asia. It suggests this move should be delayed until more is known about the environmental risks, even though carefully regulated cultivation of sterile Asian oysters in contained areas could help the local industry and researchers. It is also noted that even though these oysters eat the excess algae caused by pollution, it could take decades before there are enough of them to improve water quality.

Book A Synopsis of the Situation Regarding the Introduction of Nonindigenous Species by Ship transported Ballast Water in Canada and Selected Countries

Download or read book A Synopsis of the Situation Regarding the Introduction of Nonindigenous Species by Ship transported Ballast Water in Canada and Selected Countries written by Daniel Gauthier and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, vessels transport hundreds of million of tonnes of ballast water around the world. Those waters and associated sediments contain hundreds odf species of organisms, of wich many have established in new habitats and caused negative effects to human health, economy and environment. This report describes the Canadian situation, in its international context, regarding the introduction of nonindigenous species by ship-transported ballast water, reviewing specifically vessel traffic, regulations, management and scientific research activities, and possible controls and treatments. Essentially, the international recognition of the problem has not led to concrete action in countries other than Australia, the United States, and more recently, Israel and Chile. Canada is particularly vulnerable to the introduction of nonindigenous species by ships, considering the large quantities of ballast water discharged in its ports and the near absence of control measures in regions other than Great Lakes. As for many countries. Canada needs to assess the riks posed to its aquatic habitats and resources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chesapeake Bay restoration effort has been touted as the nation's premier environmental restoration program. Yet the Bay and the living systems it supports remain in dismally poor condition, with fisheries in decline and drinking water in danger. This book addresses the Chesapeake Bay as a political problem and reveals how the political process has worked against the interests of science, the public, and environmental advocates all at once. Author Howard Ernst shows that the forces driving environmental degradation are sown deeply into the political soul of America, posing menacing challenges to those fighting to restore large ecosystems like the Chesapeake Bay. The book serves as a political roadmap for the future, suggesting how a different course of policy action is needed to 'Save the Bay.'
