Book From Lineage to State

Download or read book From Lineage to State written by Romila Thapar and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999-11-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a concise collection of lectures which discuss the nature of early Indian society during the mid-first millennium BC and relate it to the ancient Indian historical tradition in its earliest forms. It also looks at the particular character of social formations, their genesis, and continuity as part of the later Indian social landscape. Examining the social and political formulations of the period, this volume analyses the transformation of lineage-based societies into state formulations. It considers the migration and arrival of the monarchies in the middle Ganga valley, where the evolution of these societies resulted in the formation of a state. It provides insights into environmental influences on settlements, the particularities of caste, the role of rituals, and the interaction of ideology with these changes. The volume presents an account of the interplay of a range of variables in state formation.

Download or read book Yvain written by Chretien de Troyes and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1987-09-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelfth-century French poet Chrétien de Troyes is a major figure in European literature. His courtly romances fathered the Arthurian tradition and influenced countless other poets in England as well as on the continent. Yet because of the difficulty of capturing his swift-moving style in translation, English-speaking audiences are largely unfamiliar with the pleasures of reading his poems. Now, for the first time, an experienced translator of medieval verse who is himself a poet provides a translation of Chrétien’s major poem, Yvain, in verse that fully and satisfyingly captures the movement, the sense, and the spirit of the Old French original. Yvain is a courtly romance with a moral tenor; it is ironic and sometimes bawdy; the poetry is crisp and vivid. In addition, the psychological and the socio-historical perceptions of the poem are of profound literary and historical importance, for it evokes the emotions and the values of a flourishing, vibrant medieval past.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive and analytical assessment of the history of the Indian subcontinent until 1750 CE, History of Precolonial India situates Indian history in the wider context of its Asiatic background in an effort to accommodate the ongoing cultural transactions, intersections, and overlaps. This, it is hoped, will allow the reader to go beyond the usual brief flirtations with Asian history and appreciate the historical significance of the cultural and political interactions across the shifting and permeable regional borders.Divided into three parts, the book begins with an exploration of ancient and medieval South Asian history. The second part focuses on the major debates in precolonial Indian history such as periodization, the Indo-Aryan problem, state formation, and the Indian Ocean trade. The final sectioncomprises a thematically arranged and exhaustive bibliography. In bringing out the changing historiographical contours through time, this volume focuses on facets of connected histories that went into the shaping of the cultural fabric of South Asia.

Book Tidings of the King

Download or read book Tidings of the King written by Phillip B. Wagoner and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tidings of the King presents an annotated translation and study of the Rayavacakamu, a medieval South Indian historiographic text in Telugu dealing with the reign of Krishnadevaraya (r. 1509-1529), the best-known ruler of the Vijayanagara empire. Although often taken to be a contemporary document of Krishnadevaraya's period, the Rayavacakamu is in fact a historiographic representation of that period written some ninety years later at the Nayaka court of Madurai, one of Vijayanagara's most important successor states. In his ethnohistorical introduction to the translation, Phillip Wagoner argues that one of the primary purposes of the text is to articulate an ideological argument for the political legitimacy of the Madurai Nayaka regime. By historicizing Madurai's relationship of subordination to Vijayanagara, the text affirms Nayaka legitimacy at the same time that it denies the authority of the contemporaneous Vijayanagara rulers of the Aravidu house. According to the implications of the text, the rulers of this last Vijayanagara dynasty were perceived in Madurai as bereft of ritual authority due to their loss of the fundamental source of that authority: the city of Vijayanagara itself, destroyed in 1565 by a coalition of Muslim forces. Tidings of the King will be welcomed by scholars and students occupied with any aspect of medieval South India, and it will appeal to a broader readership as well. Furthermore, the book will be of interest to historians of religion concerned with the Hindu-Muslim encounter, since the Rayavacakamu articulates one of the earliest examples of a systematic anti-Islamic polemic in South India, as discussed in detail by Dr. Wagoner in his introduction. On a more general level, anyone with an interest in the nature and functions of historiographic discourse in non-Western cultures will appreciate this book, as it offers one of the first complete translations of an Indian historiographic text in a vernacular language.
