Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of the United States: National, State, and Local The plan, scope, content, and temper of this book are in large measure the outgrowth of my experience as a teacher. My students, by the drift of their questions and discussions, have moulded my ideas of what a text-book ought to contain. This book is theirs as much as it is mine. That fact may help to explain why some features of American government are dilated upon at considerable length, while others are left as self-evident propositions to the perception of the reader. It explains, moreover, why the same problem is occasionally discussed from different angles, even though this has in volved some degree Of repetition. And if the general tone of the book betrays an optimist, my sufficient answer is that no man can be for many years associated with the American undergraduate and remain anything else. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Government in the United States State government in the United States is a subject on which many books might be written. This book is designed to furnish a critical analysis of the principles of state government in the United States. Beginning with a statement of the principles upon which the governments of the original states were estab lished, it explains how the original forms of government have developed in response to changing conditions, how the present state governments are meeting present needs, and concludes with a brief consideration of some of the contemporary plans for further reform. Why should we change our form of gov ernment? Has the time come for discarding the eighteenth century doctrine of the division of powers? These are some of the more fundamental questions to which the book attempts to give an answer. But the book is not solely concerned with the political philosophy of American state government. It also treats of the more practical problems arising out of the growth of the functions of the modern state and the increase of its administrative activities. Book Government in the United States

Download or read book Government in the United States written by James Wilford Garner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Government in the United States: National, State, and Local Merits of Local self-government. - In the United States, local self-government is regarded as one of the chief merits of our political system, and is often declared to be one of the inalienable rights of the people. One great advantage of local self-government is that it brings government near the door of every citizen, and permits the people of each locality, who are most familiar with their own local condi tions and who know best what are their local needs, to regu late their own affairs as they see fit. Also, such a system is well calculated to secure responsibility. So long as the local authorities are chosen by the community from its own inhabitants and are constantly under the eyes of the people, they can be more effectively controlled and made amenable to local public opinion than is possible where they are chosen by authorities distantly removed. An other irnportant advantage of local self-government is that it serves as a training school for the political education of the citizens. Allow them the privilege of choosing their own local officials and of regulating their own local concerns, and their interest in public affairs will be stimulated and their political intelligence increased and broadened. This not only will tend to secure more responsible government (local, state, and national), but will produce a moreoactive type of citizenship. Book A Text Book on Civil Government in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Text Book on Civil Government in the United States Classic Reprint written by George H. Martin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104 Book on Civil Government in the United States If all the laws Of the state are self-imposed, that is, if there is no power outside its body of peo ple which dictates to it in any way, the sovereignty state is said to be sovereign. This word does not admit of comparison: one state cannot be more sovereign than another; and a small state, in this respect, stands on an equality with a large one. The sovereignty of a state consists in the absolute right to control its own members, and in the absolute right to resist any inter ference in its affairs by any other state. The first of these rights constitutes its internal sovereignty; the second, its external sovereignty. From these state ments it will be seen that Boston is not a state, that Massachusetts is not a sovereign state. The United States is a sovereign state or nation. Great Britain and Russia are both sovereign states. Having now defined a state, we are prepared to define civil government as control by law exercised by the state over its members as such. Book The Government of the People of the State of Ohio Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Government of the People of the State of Ohio Classic Reprint written by George Wells Knight and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of the People, of the State of Ohio It is not the national government, but the State government, acting through its local agencies, to which the American looks for the protection of life and property, for the security of his home and family, and for the education of his children. To understand the workings of State and local government is, therefore, even more important than to know the details of the national government. Since, however, the beginnings of no two States have been the same, the governments of hardly any two are alike, and no general description of the American State, as a mere chapter in American civil government, exactly fits any actual State. It is the purpose of this book, accordingly, to present such an outline of the civic history and of the governmental machinery of the State of Ohio as will enable youth in the high schools, and the higher grades of the grammar and rural schools, to understand both what the government is, and how it came to be, and what the duties and responsibilities are of citizens of Ohio. It is not possible to note in this book all the variations in county, township, and municipal government and powers, due to special legislation. The general type has been carefully given, and the leading exceptions have been indicated. Each teacher should ascertain and call attention to the peculiarities, if any exist, in local organization in his county and township, village, or city. While a knowledge of the form and powers of the government is important, two things should be borne in mind in the teaching of civics: (1) that concrete examples of governmental work drawn from local observation and study are the best aids to an understanding of the use and operations of orderly government, and (2) that the knowledge of forms and powers is barren, except as it leads to a conception of the duty and responsibility of each citizen under those forms for the right exercise of the powers. Book Readings on American State Government Classic Reprint

Download or read book Readings on American State Government Classic Reprint written by Paul Samuel Reinsch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings on American State Government The editor offers this second volume of readings to students and to the public in the hope that it may help to make more familiar the actual working of our state governments. It is mat ter for regret that there is no such source of information as the Congressional Record affords in matters relating to the national government. So much of the real activity of the state legislatures taking place in the comparative seclusion Of committee, combined with the incomplete nature and intent of the current press reports, forces the student of the real life of the state lawmaking bodies to rely upon the agencies which are coming into existence to remedy this defective publicity and Observation. State documents, too, are, in the main, rather statistical and local in character. The messages of the governors are frequently, however, quite invaluable sources, while the Opinions of our courts and the conferences of the bar associations are a seemingly hitherto unworked mine. To the field workers in the study of actual government - the newspaper re vmrters and magazine writers - the public and students owe a debt they are not always conscious of. The editor desires to make grateful acknowledgment to the various publishers and authors, individually recognized in the text, who have generously permitted him to make use of selections from articles or works published or written by them. The editor of the present collection desires to express his deep indebtedness to his colleague and friend, Mr. William L. Bailey, for his invaluable assistance in the preparation of this volume. Not only did he furnish many of the selections, but he counseled with respect to the general plan of the book; and, finally, the editor, called abroad on a public mission, was obliged to turn over to him the arduous task of seeing the volume through the press. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of the State of Pennsylvania, Including Local Government A State of the United States. A State is the largest political division of the United States. It has a distinct government of its own established by the people of the State. The first thirteen States of the United States had their origin in the thirteen colonies established by England in this country. Most of the other States had been organized as Territories before their admission into the union. In the United States a State is more distinctly a political organization and at the same time more definitely a member of the union and a part of the national govern ment than in any other nation of the world. Download or read book The Government of the United States Classic Reprint written by L. S. Shimmell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of the United States Many teachers entertain a conviction that most text-books for use in grammar and high-school grades, especially in the latter, require too much time for a thorough mastery of their contents. The number of subjects taught in schools of all kinds and grades has greatly multiplied In recent years; but the school day Is no longer than it was-in fact, it is Shorter; nor has the school year been lengthened much, least of all in towns and cities. Consequently there is much complaint concerning overloaded courses of study and crowded annual, weekly, and daily programs. There are those among educators, and others interested 111 educational improvement, who advocate a reduction In the number Of subjects taught and a more intensive Study of the branches retained. It IS not within the province of this Preface to predict how the evil complained of will be remedied; but experience in the schooeom has led many teachers to believe that less voluminous text-books would be at least a partial remedy. If the demands of the age require an Increasingly greater number of subjects to be taught, it follows that less time must be given to each subject. But unless the text-books are proportionately reduced in their scope, the attempt to get over them will result in skimming and skipping, and conseqilently in an imperfect and evanescent knowledge of the contents.
