Book excerpt: Excerpt from The State and Behaviour of English Catholics, From the Reformation to the Year 1781: With a View of Their Present Number, Wealth, Character, &C Before the press be closed, I see a propriety in prefixing a few observations. When in manuscript, the following pages were submitted to the inspection of friends; they made objections which I attended to; and I made some alterations at their request. I could not do all they desired, because I could not totally sacrifice my own ways of thinking. I owed something to myself as well as to them. The printed sheets have also been seen by others, whose moderation and improved abilities I greatly value. It is proper, attention should be paid to their remarks. They have told me that, I Should have quoted authorities for what, on many occasions, I have said. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Catholicism Identity and Politics in the Age of Enlightenment

Download or read book Catholicism Identity and Politics in the Age of Enlightenment written by Alexander Lock and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2016 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the changing aspirations, attitudes and identities of English Catholics in the late eighteenth century This book explores the changing aspirations, attitudes and identities of English Catholics in the late eighteenth century, a period which marked a critical moment of transition in their spiritual, political and intellectual culture. It is based on the experiences of the English Catholic baronet, Grand Tourist and politician Sir Thomas Gascoigne (1745-1810). Gascoigne was born on the Continent into a devout Catholic family based in Yorkshire; however, following an unusual Continental upbringing and extensive series of Grand Tours to the courts of Catholic Europe, he would abjure his faith for a seat in Parliament. Throughout his life, he was an important advocate of agricultural reform, a considerable coal owner interested in mining engineering, as well as a keen developer of spa culture. By examining the experiences of Gascoigne and his milieu, this book explores English Catholic attitudes towards continental Catholicism, the influence of the European Enlightenment upon their education and outlook, and how this affected their Christianity, their estates and their conception of national identity. It demonstrates how increased toleration entailed a gradual rejection amongst English Catholics of a pious separatism for a more ecumenical and, ultimately, Enlightened approach to religion. Although this risked the loss of English Catholics to Anglicanism, many - like Gascoigne - remained crypto-Catholic in sympathy. They adapted their faith to the Enlightenment and regarded it as a matter of personal conviction and private choice. Book Divided Loyalties Pushing the Boundaries of Gender and Lay Roles in the Catholic Church 1534 1829

Download or read book Divided Loyalties Pushing the Boundaries of Gender and Lay Roles in the Catholic Church 1534 1829 written by Lisa McClain and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-28 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores changing gender and religious roles for Catholic men and women in the British Isles from Henry VIII’s break with the Catholic Church in 1534 to full emancipation in 1829. Filled with richly detailed stories, such as the suppression of Mary Ward’s Institute of English Ladies, it explores how Catholics created and tested new understandings of women’s and men’s roles in family life, ritual, religious leadership, and vocation through engaging personal narratives, letters, trial records, and other rich primary sources. Using an intersectional approach, it crafts a compelling narrative of three centuries of religious and social experimentation, adaptation, and change as traditional religious and gender norms became flexible during a period of crisis. The conclusions shed new light on the Catholic Church’s long-term, ongoing process of balancing gendered and religious authority during this period while offering insights into the debates on those topics taking place worldwide today.
