Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1857. Excerpt: ... Wycliffe was far from sending every private man to the Bible, to make out a creed for himself; he was only careful to warn his hearers against receiving new articles of belief, on the authority of the Pope; his own rule of faith being the same as that of Vincent of Lerins, and other Fathers of the primitive Church, viz., that alone is true, which has ever been believed by all people in all places. Wycliffe was much opposed to the doctrine of Transubstantiation, to which I have alluded in noticing the various corruptions of our holy religion. This doctrine had never been formally received by the Church of England, although it was very generally held. "Wycliffe however boldly denied that it was a primitive doctrine, and in so doing brought down upon himself the condemnation of his views by the University of Oxford, which pronounced sentence of imprisonment and suspension from office in the University, and excommunication. This was a severe sentence, and shows very plainly the spirit with which the controversy was carried on. Wycliffe was sitting in his doctor's chair, and explaining his views on this controverted point, when he was informed of the decree which had been passed. "When he recovered from his first surprise, he said that neither the Chancellor nor those who acted with him could refute what he taught: and since this decree would suspend him from performing his duties in the University, he would appeal to the King in Parliament, Richard the Se- cond being at that time on the throne. This proceeding was looked upon as a further proof of Wycliffe's heresy; but before any steps could be taken, a fearful outbreak of the peasantry occurred, which threatened for a time to overthrow the established order of society. The Archbishop of Canterbury was ...

Book The Life of Jesus Critically Examined

Download or read book The Life of Jesus Critically Examined written by David Friedrich Strauss and published by . This book was released on 1860 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Friedrich Strauss's Das Leben Jesu kritisch bearbeitet (1835) brought about a new dawn in Biblical criticism by applying the 'myth theory' to the life of Jesus. Strauss treated the Gospel narrative like any other historical work, and denied all supernatural elements in the Gospels. Das Leben Jesu created an overnight sensation and Strauss became embroiled in fierce controversy. This earliest English version of 1846 was translated by the novelist George Eliot, and was her first published book.

Book Abandonment to Divine Providence

Download or read book Abandonment to Divine Providence written by Jean-Pierre De Caussade and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2011-09-06 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God is to be found in the simplest of our daily activities and especially through total surrender to whatever is His will for each of us. That is the message of this 18th-century inspirational classic by Jean-Pierre de Caussade. Its encouragement to ""live in the present moment,"" accepting everyday obstacles with faith, humility and love, has guided generations of believers to holiness and spiritual peace. This special volume of the famous spiritual treatise also includes the many insightful letters of Father de Caussade on the practice of self-abandonment. These numerous letters provide a great additional source of wisdom and practical guidance for how to grow in abandonment and to deepen our union with God in our daily lives. De Caussade shows that this practice of self-abandonment to God's will is the key to attaining true peace and virtue, and that it is readily available to all people - from beginners to those well advanced in the spiritual life. He also shows how to determine what God's will is for us. He reveals that it is not extraordinary feats that God expects for our growth in holiness, but rather heroic attention to every detail in our lives and humble acceptance of our daily lot in life as coming from His hand. The rich spiritual lessons in this book have stood the test of time, offering real and practical assistance to all people because its message is simple and clear, one that the reader will find to be a rare treasure of inspiration and direction to be referred to again and again.

Book The Homilies of Saint John Chrysostom On the Gospel of Saint Matthew

Download or read book The Homilies of Saint John Chrysostom On the Gospel of Saint Matthew written by Saint John Chrysostom and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE Homilies of St. Chrysostom on St. Matthew were undoubtedly delivered at Antioch, (see Hom. vii. p. 105.) and probably in the latter part of the time during which he preached as a Presbyter. Montfaucon considers his little mention of the sin of swearing a sign of his having accomplished some reformation on that point by his previous exertions. In the Homilies delivered from 386 to 388, it is a constant topic; and the Homilies known to belong to that date are so numerous, as scarcely to leave room for such a series as the present. These, however, contain very little to mark the period to which they belong. The argument from his reference to dissensions some time gone by, possibly those between St. Meletius and Paulinus and Evagrius, in commenting on St. Matt. 23:6. is not very conclusive. Book excerpt: The History of the Church or company of those who by faith have received Christ and become His followers, is still in the making, not yet complete. On this account and because of its immense extent, although it is of supreme importance, parts only of it can be written and from time to time. First one, then another, must relate what he has seen or has learned from trustworthy records, and this must be taken up and added to as stage after stage of the long pilgrimage is traversed. The following pages are a contribution to the unfolding story.

Book Dictionary of Biblical Criticism and Interpretation

Download or read book Dictionary of Biblical Criticism and Interpretation written by Stanley E. Porter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-01-24 with total page 854 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2007. Compiling the results from contemporary and exciting areas of research into one single important volume, this book stands ahead of its field in providing a comprehensive one-stop Handbook reference of biblical interpretation. Examining a wide range of articles on many of the recognized interpreters including Augustine, Luther and Calvin, up to the modern figures of Martin Hengel and T.W. Manson, Porter expertly combines the study of biblical interpretation with the examination of the theological and philosophical preconceptions that have influenced it, and surveys the history of interpretation from different perspectives. Key perspectives studied include: the historical dimension; addressing how interpretation has developed at various periods of time; from early Jewish exegesis to the historical-critical method; the conceptual approach; looks at the various schools of thought that have generated biblical interpretation, and compares and contrasts competing conceptual models of interpretation; the personal perspective; addresses the reality of biblical interpretation by individuals who have helped plot the course of theological development; With relevant bibliographies and a guide to further reading, this Dictionary will be an extremely important reference held for many years, not only by libraries, but also by students, scholars, clergy and teachers of this fascinating and high-profile subject.
