Book The Christ of the Mount

    Book Details:
  • Author : E. Stanley Jones
  • Publisher : Pickle Partners Publishing
  • Release : 2019-01-13
  • ISBN : 1789123305
  • Pages : 268 pages

Download or read book The Christ of the Mount written by E. Stanley Jones and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-13 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, which was first published in 1931, is for every person who suspects and hopes there is a better way to live responsibly and compassionately in the complex world we share. In this book, Jones challenges us to go deeper, question and ultimately discover the effect of Jesus’ principles on humanity, regardless one’s background or predisposed religious views. “I trust this book will be an unhesitating, but not a too-light, easy, ‘Yes’ to the question as to whether the Sermon on the Mount is practicable. If the reading of it brings to the reader what the writing of it has brought to the writer in these months of meditation, then we will both be repaid a hundredfold. A trusted friend said to the writer, ‘You are not a theologian; you are a divining rod. You tell us where there is water beneath—remember your function.’ In this book I have tried to remember my function. I have left to others the discussion of the critical questions involved in the accounts of the Sermon on the Mount as reported by Matthew and Luke. I have not been able to escape theological implications—who can escape them?—but I have tried to leave to the theologians the labeling of the wells and their more accurate description while I have endeavored to be true to my friend’s commission and have pointed to where in the Sermon on the Mount I think water may be found. There is water here—dig and drink!”—E. Stanley Jones, Introduction

Book The Garlic Papers

Download or read book The Garlic Papers written by Stanley Crawford and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-21 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers of Stanley Crawford's first book on farming, A Garlic Testament, can look forward to an update on his farming practices and reflections on the natural world in THE GARLIC PAPERS: A Small Garlic Farm in the Age of Global Vampires . In the fall of 2014, Crawford questioned the U.S. Department of Commerce's granting of an exemption of duties to the largest importer of Chinese garlic, setting off a massive legal battle in which his small farm has been pitted against the Chinese importer and its several international law firms. An account of this David and Goliath battle, now in its fifth year, makes up the core of the book, in which Crawford describes his personal and farming life under a cloud of lawsuits and administrative skirmishes. The unusual case was of sufficient interest that it became the subject of a Netflix documentary, Garlic Breath," in the six-part series, "Rotten," released in 2018."

Book Paper Tiger

Download or read book Paper Tiger written by Stanley Woodward and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stanley Woodward (1895-1964) was a veteran sports writer, newspaperman, and sports editor of the New York Herald Tribune; indeed, some believe he was the greatest of all sports editors. Paper Tiger is his lively and vivid account of his life as an athlete, sailor, war correspondent, and metropolitan journalist. Whether discussing his war experiences, the world of sports, or the tough and exciting world of newspaper life, Woodward speaks with a rare directness. When he doesn't like something or someone, he makes no bones about it. Yet, despite all of his often acerbic comments, we always have the feeling that the author's honesty is matched by his fairness. Partisan he may be; vindictive and sour he is not. Although Paper Tiger will appeal especially to sports fans, anyone who wants to know the inside story of newspaper life will find it a fascinating book. In his phenomenal career, Stanley Woodward wrote a number of sports books, including Sports Page and Stanley Woodward's Football. He is the winner of three E. P. Dutton awards for sports writing. John Schulian is the author of Writers' Fighters and Other Sweet Scientists and Twilight of the Long-ball Gods: Dispatches from the Disappearing Heart of Baseball, available in a Bison Books edition.

Book William Stanley as Shakespeare

Download or read book William Stanley as Shakespeare written by John M. Rollett and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-04-07 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting striking new evidence, this book shows that "William Shakespeare" was the pen name of William Stanley, son of the Earl of Derby. Born in 1561, he was educated at Oxford, travelled for three years abroad, and studied law in London, mixing with poets and playwrights. In 1592 Spenser recorded that Stanley had written several plays. In 1594 he unexpectedly inherited the earldom--hence the pen name. He became a Knight of the Garter in 1601, eligible to help bear the canopy over King James at his coronation, likely prompting Sonnet 125's "Wer't ought to me I bore the canopy?"--he is the only authorship candidate ever in a position to "bear the canopy" (which was only ever borne over royalty). Love's Labour's Lost parodies an obscure poem by Stanley's tutor, which few others would have read. Hamlet's situation closely mirrors Stanley's in 1602. His name is concealed in the list of actors' names in the First Folio. His writing habits match Shakespeare's as deduced from the early printed plays. He was a patron of players who performed several times at court, and financed the troupe known as Paul's Boys. No other member of the upper class was so thoroughly immersed in the theatrical world.
