Book excerpt: A collection of essays is presented on the biology of eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) in Alaska. The distribution of the plant in Alaska is disjunct and extends from Kotzebue Sound to the southern border of the state. The present circumboreal distribution is thought to be the result of dispersal from a west Pacific origin around the Pacific rim and through the Arctic into the Atlantic. Ten widely scattered eelgrass populations in Alaska have been sampled for quantitative comparison. The highest standing stocks were found in Kinzarof and lzembek lagoons on the Alaska Peninsula. The caloric content, chlorophyll a concentration, turion density, and leaf size varied greatly among the populations. The eelgrass in Safety Lagoon survives the arctic winter under one meter of se ic in conditions of extremely low light intensity and anoxic water. (Author).

Book excerpt: Nitrogen limitation in beds of eelgrass, Zostera marina L., was examined by correlating plant standing stock and sediment nitrogen supplies, by measurement of nitrogen uptake in eelgrass roots and leaves, and by experimental manipulation of plant-nitrogen interaction. Eelgrass standing stock and sediment nitrogen across an eelgrass meadow were analyzed. Correlation was found between the integrated interstitial ammonium pool and shoot density and other morphological characteristics. A model of eelgrass growth predicted the effect of nitrogen utilization on biomass production and growth rates; nitrogen limitation controlled growth throughout the summer in ammonium-poor eelgrass beds but only at the peak growth periods in ammonium-rich areas. Prediction of nitrogen enrichment effects similar to literature findings confirmed the impact of nitrogen limitation. Simulation of the spatial and seasonal influences of nitrogen and light as controls on eelgrass growth demonstrated the recurrent effects of dominant environmental limitations within an eelgrass meadow.

Book excerpt: This thesis investigates food web and community structure in Izembek Lagoon, Alaska, an ecologically important sub-arctic seagrass system. Unprecedented environmental changes in high latitudes, such as increased sea-surface temperatures and a shorter duration of shore-fast sea ice, may now favor seagrass over phytoplankton production as compared to forty years ago. Any resulting shifts in food web and community dynamics could have substantial consequences given the importance of seagrass habitat for Alaskan fisheries, global migratory bird populations and benthic energy transformation. Recent (2008) stable isotope (C and N) values and benthic community metrics were gathered and compared to results from a similar study from the mid- 1970's to gauge temporal food web and community structure differences. An increase in reliance on seagrass carbon was detected in organisms involved in detrital and sediment processing. An increase in abundance of certain benthic organisms and a decrease in overall community evenness were also seen. These findings suggest an escalation in delivery of seagrass carbon to the food web, possibly induced by changing seagrass morphology or bed density at this location.
