Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stamps of the German Empire The Postal Administration sent in its report to the Government of the Grand Duchy on 2lst June, 1859, set ting forth the necessity of having fresh plates provided for printing the stamps, as those in use were worn out, and that the question had arisen whether the design should not be changed; that the present design was antiquated; that the printing on col ored paper was not clear, nor were the stamps safe from imitation; that it would be better that the stamps should be printed on white paper in colors according to their values, and, as was then done elsewhere, the country should be denoted by the head of its Sovereign or its Arms; and that in order to render the stamps perfect, secure from imitation, and their separation readier, they should be perforated as in England and France. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germany and Its Colonies It might be considered more logical to place the stamps of Thurn and Taxis under a separate heading, as has been done with those of the German States that were merged into those of the North German Confederation, or the Empire; but as the service extended to several States in North and South Germany they are not localised, and have usually been placed under the head of Germany, and it is perhaps better to. Conform to custom. The postage stamp history of Germany will, therefore, be considered under the following heads. Book The German Empire Between Two Wars

Download or read book The German Empire Between Two Wars written by Robert Herndon Fife and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German Empire Between Two Wars: A Study of the Political and Social Development of the Nation Between 1871 and 1914 No political development in the past half-century has been so striking as the growth of the German empire. Such a statement is the merest platitude to-day when the world is being rocked to its foundation by the frightful readjustment which may be traced mainly to this cause. It is, perhaps, equally trite to say that hand in hand with this growth there has gone forward an evolution within the empire which is just as striking. Year after year as the nation went on adding to its population and pilling up matchless resources and industry and commerce and still greater possibilities in the training of its scientist and men of affairs it also added tremendously to its burdens and problems. To the growing dangers without there were added dangers within, caused by the ever sharpening strife between feudalism and democracy, agriculture and commerce, industry and labor. The unstable equilibrium thus caused might long since have toppled to a fall had not the rise in power without been accompanied by a growing devotion to national unity and national ambitions. Out of the turmoil of Germany's foreign and domestic struggles there has stood forth more and more clearly great contrast, the contrast between the progress of the nation along economic lines and its arrest in political and social development. It was this contrast, which has struck the attention of so many observers, that suggested the present work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One American's Opinion of the European War: An Answer to Germany's Appeals Which is appealing to Americans for their sympathy and endeavor ing to make them believe a number of things which at present they do not believe at all. If those en deavors are worth while, it is equally worth while to let that Publicity Department together with the few, more or less American busybodies, whom it has beguiled with a promise of the limelight know that in the judgment of at least one man a very great major ity of the people of this country feel that the kind of civilization under which they were born and have been brought up, has been put in peril by a wanton breach of the peace of the world by the German Empire.
