Excerpt: ... ably be in another room, there is nothing in the text to indicate that they are not in the room with Clarence.40 Act II, Scene 1.--The effect of the opening lines with King Edward attempting to reconcile his nobles, is to relieve a little the tension of the preceding, but with the entrance of Richard, the irony of it all becomes apparent, and the scene ends in mourning. In regard to the staging, this would seem to indicate the lack, at least in The Theatre, of any arrangement for " discovered" scenes, for the sick king was probably brought in "carried in a chair " like Brutus in " Locrine,"41 or Abdilmelec in " The Battle of Alcazar,"42 and is taken off at the end of the scene. Scene 2.--This is a thoroughly typical scene of lamentation, of which the drama offers many examples. The dramatic effectiveness of the lament had always been recognized, but it had never received such abundant illustration as in " Richard the Third." In this play there are no less than four scenes in which the lament is the principal motive; namely, Act III, Scene 2, the Queen and the Duchess of York mourning for Edward and Clarence, Act II, Scene 4, the Queen mourning for Grey and Rivers, Act IV, Scene 1, the Queen, the Duchess of York and Anne before the Tower, and Act IV, Scene 4, the Duchess of York, Margaret, and the Queen lamenting together. There are also seven scenes in which the lament plays a fairly important part.48 Such lyric passages have figured largely from the earliest attempts to represent a story dramatically. In the liturgy of the medieval Church one of the most impressive interpolations for special celebrations was the Easter Officium Sepulchri, which represented the three Marys on their way to the Tomb and exclaiming in turn: * ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: King Richard III is one of Shakespeare's most popular and frequently-performed plays. Janis Lull's introduction to this new edition, based on the First Folio, emphasises the play's tragic themes - individual identity, determinism and choice - and stresses the importance of women's roles in the play. It also underscores the special relationship between Richard III and Macbeth, demonstrating that the later tragedy re-examines issues raised in the earlier one. A thorough performance history of stage and film versions of Richard III shows how the text has been cut, rewritten and re-shaped by directors and actors to enhance the role of Richard at the expense of other parts, especially those of the women. The notes define the play's language and ideas in terms easily accessible to contemporary readers.

Book The Tragedy of King Richard III

Download or read book The Tragedy of King Richard III written by William Shakespeare and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2000 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard III is one of Shakespeare's most popular plays on the stage and has been adapted successfully for film. This new and innovative edition recognizes the play's pre-eminence as a performance work: a perspective that informs every aspect of the editing. Challenging traditional practice, the text is based on the 1597 Quarto which, it is argued, brings us closest to the play as it would have been staged in Shakespeare's theatre. The introduction, which is illustrated, explores the long performance history from Shakespeare's time to the present. Its critical engagement with the playresponds to recent historicist and gender-based approaches. The commentary gives detailed explication of matters of language, staging, text, and historical and cultural contexts, providing coverage that is both carefully balanced and alert to nuance of meaning.Documentation of the extensive textual variants is organized for maximum clarity: the readings of the Folio and the Quarto are presented in separate banks, and more specialist information is given at the back of the book. Appendices also include selected passages from the main source and a specialindex of actors and other theatrical personnel.

It depicts the Machiavellian rise to power and subsequent short reign of Richard III of England. The play is grouped among the histories in the First Folio and is most often classified as such. Occasionally, however, as in the quartoedition, it is termed a tragedy. Richard III concludes Shakespeare's first tetralogy (also containing Henry VI parts 1–3).
