Download or read book Assessment of Various Dairy Cattle Manure based Media for Laboratory Rearing of Stable Flies Stomoxys Calcitrans L written by Erica Michelle Hammond and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae), are cosmopolitan blood-feeding pests, capable of spreading disease. Researchers are striving to find more efficient and sustainable methods of stable fly control. Many studies on stable fly control are performed in a laboratory setting where flies are reared from eggs and inhibitory treatments are applied at some stage of their growth. Laboratory rearing of stable flies has never been perfected and workers have reported difficulty raising stable flies. The goal of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of various manure-based media for allowing successful development of the stable fly. In this study, the influence of moisture content, and age and drying of dairy manure on fly development was additionally examined. Twenty-two different media types were developed and evaluated to ascertain a good-quality, consistent rearing medium. Trial media 15, 19, 21, 22, and 111 had the highest pupation (78–87%). Drying manure significantly lowered percent pupation, mean pupal weight, and percent adult eclosion, and aging may benefit development to some extent. Different methods of transporting eggs from the rearing facility to the laboratory were tested, and a favored means of obtaining eggs from off-site sources was found. This research will provide information for future projects that require laboratory rearing of stable flies, and help to give more insight to the role age of dairy cattle manure plays in stable fly development.

Download or read book Response of Stomoxys Calcitrans and Musca Domestica Diptera Muscidae to Volatile Organic Compound Profiles from Ontario Canada Dairy Farms written by Alycia Louise Saddler and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stomoxys calcitrans are significant pests of dairy and beef cattle livestock facilities. Their seasonal abundance causes damage to the industry in the United States. While similar damage has been documented in Canada, the majority of the research explores population dynamics of stable flies with respect to seasonal and temporal conditions. Exploring potential semiochemical targets that impact host-parasite interactions, at livestock facilities, can give insight in creating novel integrated pest management (IPM) approaches. We have sampled Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) at dairy farms in Southern Ontario, to determine important components of volatile profiles at such sites. Further, we have used Gas-Chromatography-Electroantennography (GC-EAG) to identify VOCs presenting electrophysiological activity in S. calcitrans, for further exploration of their significance in behavioural modification. The data collected illustrates that VOC profiles taken at livestock facilities are subject to change over the summer months, and has produced novel targets for IPM programs.

Download or read book Zoogeographical Analysis of Mitochondrial Diversity in the House Fly Musca Domestica L Diptera Muscidae written by Jose Gerardo Marquez and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The regional diversity indices H[Subscript s] were heterogeneous. The differentiation among regions G[Subscript ST] was 0.49 and differentiation within regions G[Subscript P(R)] was 0.32, indicative of a high degree of population structuring. In the New World the number of haplotypes and gene diversities were homogeneous among the six subregions examined, but a strong spatial component was found in the distribution of haplotypes, particularly in the Nearctic. Nei's differentiation index G[Subscript RT] was 0.53 among subregions. Most (69%) of the variance of haplotype frequencies was attributed to differences among populations within subregions. Greater differentiation was found among populations in the Nearctic than in the Neotropics. The research indicated high degrees of structuring at all hierarchical levels thus suggesting low rates of maternal gene flow, a surprising result considering the great vagility of house flies and the opportunities for distribution via commercial transport.
