Book Extending the European Security Community

Download or read book Extending the European Security Community written by Emilian Kavalski and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2008-03-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The region of the Balkans has become one of the emblematic features of the post-Cold War geography of international relations. Understanding the extension of the European zone of peace to the Balkans is at the heart of this pioneering work into the post-Cold War socialisation of the region. How is peace (i.e. a security-community-order) initiated in the Balkans? Who are the dominant agents of such peace-promotion? What processes suggest the initiation of (lasting) peace in the Balkans? Under what circumstances do regional states comply with international standards? Looking at the order-promoting processes of both the EU and Nato, Emilian Kavalski offers us the first detailed and theoretically-informed comparative analysis of the role played by external actors in the Balkan region as a whole. In doing so, he provides us with an insight into the processes of peace-promotion in general, and the patterns of security-community-building in the Balkans in particular.

Book EU foreign and security policy in Bosnia

Download or read book EU foreign and security policy in Bosnia written by Ana Juncos and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first ever comprehensive study of the EU’s foreign and security policy in Bosnia. Drawing on a wealth of fresh empirical material, it demonstrates that institutions are a key variable in explaining levels of common foreign security policy (CFSP) coherence and effectiveness over time. In doing so, it also sheds new light on the role that intergovernmental, bureaucratic and local political contestation have played in the formulation and implementation of a European foreign policy. The study concludes that the EU’s involvement in Bosnia has not only had a significant impact on this Balkan country in its path from stabilisation to integration, but has also transformed the EU, its foreign and security policy and shaped the development of the EU’s international identity along the way. The book will be of great interest to researchers and students of EU politics, International Relations and Bosnian politics.

Book Territoriality and Migration in the E U Neighbourhood

Download or read book Territoriality and Migration in the E U Neighbourhood written by Margaret Walton-Roberts and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-16 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together an interdisciplinary group of scholars around an important question: how has migration changed in Europe as the European Union has enlarged, and what are the consequences for countries (and for migrants themselves) inside and outside of these redrawn jurisdictional and territorial borders? By addressing this question the book contributes to three current debates with respect to EU migration management: 1) that recent developments in EU migration management represent a profound spatial and organizational reconfiguration of the regional governance of migration, 2) the trend towards the externalization or subcontracting of migration control and, 3) how the implications of Europe’s changing immigration policy are increasingly felt across the European neighborhood and beyond. Based on new empirical research, the authors in this collection explore these three processes and their consequences for both member and non-member EU states, for migrants themselves, and for migration systems in the region. The collection indicates that despite the rhetoric of social and spatial integration across the EU region, as one wall has come down, new walls have gone up as novel migration and security policy frameworks have been erected – making European immigration more complex, and potentially more influential beyond the EU zone, than ever.

Book Enlargement of the European Union

Download or read book Enlargement of the European Union written by Allan F. Tatham and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2009-01-26 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of EU enlargement has raised many thorny issues unanticipated by the framers of the EC Treaty. A significant upshot of these issues is that the concept of European identity – defined in terms of such factors as culture, history and economics – has supplanted the long-dominant theme of ‘widening and deepening,’ particularly since the Union’s expansion has become primarily eastward. The major contribution of this important book lies in its analysis of the conceptualization and perception of enlargement from various points of view, focusing on the concerns of stakeholders and the ‘identity’ conflicts and uncertainties incurred by enlargement initiatives. In the course of its presentation, it details the actual pre-accession Europeanization process and its complex history. Among the key elements discussed are the following: the conflict between ‘widening’ and ‘deepening’ and the effect on EU institutional reform; institutional requirements on candidate countries; pre-accession criteria and negotiations; administrative capacity, judicial capacity, and legal approximation in accession states; capacity of the EU to absorb new Member States; and EC law as part of European identity. Also covered are specific historical details of particular pre-accession negotiations (e.g., Greece, Spain, Portugal, Malta, and Cyprus), the still inconclusive negotiations with Turkey and the Western Balkan states, and political factors involved in the non-accession of Norway, Iceland and Switzerland. Assembling powerful evidence and applying incisive analysis, the author’s conclusion shows that, absent further (and major) EU institutional reform, it will be difficult for an enlarging Union to continue to ‘deliver the goods.’ A watershed in the continuing great debate on the fulfilment of the EC Treaty’s determination to foster and promote ‘an ever closer union of the peoples of Europe,’ this book will prove invaluable to anybody interested in the European integration project, particularly lawyers, academics, officials and policymakers in the EU Member States.

Book Democratisation Without Societal Participation

Download or read book Democratisation Without Societal Participation written by Nina Wichmann and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2007 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the strategy of the European Union in the democratisation processes of Serbia and Croatia in the years 2000 - 2005. It argues that the EU intervention turned the democratization processes into Europeanisation processes, which featured the promotion of societal participation, the regional approach and the conditionality principle as their constitutive elements. In examining the EU's choice of actors targeted and analysing the issue areas promoted by its policy, the study explores the implementation of concepts of societal participation and challenges the proclamation of civil society promotion being an indispensable part of the EU's democratisation agenda for Serbia and Croatia.
