This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER IIL GEOFFREY. Making a sunshine in a shady place. IT was an oppressively warm afternoon. The windows of a small sitting-room up in the third story of a lodging-house in a dingy back street in London were wide open, but the air which came in from the street seemed hotter almost than that within the room. A tall, fair-haired man was lying back in an arm-chair beside the window, dozing; his worn, haggard face, and the thin white hands which lay on the arms of the chair, telling of long and wasting sickness. A lady was sitting beside him, engaged in mending a little frock, and every now and again she held up her finger warningly, and said Sh if any noise was made by the four children at play in the room. Two THE PAPER SOLDIER. 23 little girls in one corner were dressing their dolls in their best for a doll's tea-party, the tea-things for which were already set out on a footstool. The fare provided, however, was not very inviting, consisting only of a few crumbs of bread, and a tea-pot full of cold water. A boy somewhat older was sitting on the horse-hair sofa, with a sickly- looking little child of three on his knee, whom he was amusing by cutting out figures out of an old illustrated paper, and weaving stories about them in whispers. Here's a soldier, Dolly; what a grand fellow Look at the sword and gun he's got Me cut him, Dolly cried eagerly, snatching the scissors from her brother. There, then; carefully now. Oh, dear as a misdirected snip of Dolly's deprived the soldier of one of his legs. Dolly's face was contracting for a howl of vexation, but her brother went on quickly, He's been in a battle, poor fellow, and a cannon-ball came flying along and cut his leg right off. So he's going home now, and here, turning the page over, are his ...

Book Parenting the Custodial Grandchild

Download or read book Parenting the Custodial Grandchild written by Bert Hayslip, Jr., PhD and published by Springer Publishing Company. This book was released on 2008-03-24 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grandparents have long played important roles in the lives of their adult children and their grandchildren in our own as well as in many other cultures. Yet it has only been in the last 3 or 4 decades that grandparents have received the kind of academic scrutiny that other family members--especially mothers--have been receiving a century or more. This groundbreaking collection has targeted the essence of what occurs in the context of grandparents' efforts at parenting their grandchildren as well as the nature of these interactions. Indeed, grandparent's views on the adequacy of their parenting skills and the nature of their relationships with their grandchildren are at the heart of many of the difficulties and satisfactions associated with the resumption of the parenting role in middle and later life, and are of central importance in the lives and well-being of both custodial grandparents and their grandchildren. The volume, which will be of vital interest to family counselors, mental health practitioners, educators, school counselors, social workers, psychologists, and social service providers, approaches this issue from novel theoretical perspectives, presents new empirical data, and provides valuable suggestions for therapists who are treating grandparent-grandchild dyads. It is methodologically diverse, relying upon case studies, empirical findings, and national datasets. Additionally, it incorporates longitudinal work, which has been absent in research with grandparent caregivers to date. Most importantly, it defines new areas of understanding of custodial grandparents that are relevant to both researchers and practitioners, e.g., dealing with grief and loss, a focus on grandchildren, the interactional style of caregiving, parenting education, intergenerational ambivalence, and therefore, should provide fertile ground for work regarding these issues which are so central to the lives of custodial grandparents and their grandchildren. Highlighted coverage includes: Intergenerational relationships/intergenerational transmission of values and their implications for parenting among custodial grandparents the adjustments custodial grandchildren must make in the school system, viewed from the perspective of school personnel (an assistant principal and school counselor) the experiences/perceptions of adult children raised by their grandparents- impact on relationships with grandparents and the parenting of their own children the role of the adult parent in the context of grandparents raising grandchildren Each of these chapters will be written from an applied, practitioner perspective and stress the clinical implications of each issue.

Book excerpt: Grandparenting: Contemporary Perspectives is one of the first books of its kind to offer a dedicated account of the social and psychological research on this important life stage. Reflecting the contemporary positive approach to ageing, it covers many of the issues that impact the grandparent experience today, such as care-giving and changing family structures, to reveal the health and wellbeing benefits of the grandparent role. It examines biological, psychological, social/ familial, gender, cultural and economic dimensions to map out the current landscape in this emerging field. Moore and Rosenthal draw on quantitative and qualitative, experimental, survey, observation and case study research, including unique data on grandfathers. They examine how people respond to the challenges and possibilities of grandparenting, and how this influences intergenerational relationships and adapting to growing older. The book provides a comprehensive, up-to-date evidence base for students in health, sociology and psychology and those interested in gerontology and the lifespan.
