She said she had got a short and restless sleep, and awaking at dawn went out to breathe the fresh mountain air. When they lifted George, he fretted a little; a thing not customary with him, but he was soon pacified, and they set out on their journey. James carried the child one half of the way, as nearly as they could agree, but when he had carried him two miles, he would often contend that it was but one, and scarcely so much. He likewise slipped into a farm house by the way, and by what means he prevailed he would not tell 3 he however brought out a cake with butter and cheese, which they shared amongst them. She desired him not to do it again, for she had fifty shillings in her pocket; and as they crossed one of the great roads leading from Tweddale to Edinburgh, she treated James with the best a little public house could afford. James was so well pleased with himself, and the charge he had taken of this young couple, that he was in gayer spirits than usual, and before evening they arrived at the cottage where hi parents resided. It stood in a wild valley, and a rivulet, or (as the country people call it) burn, ran down on each side of it, and met immediately below the house. The old people were glac! to see their son, but received Jeanv with seeming caution; observing her youth, beauty, and the boy in her arms. But James having learned her whole history by the way, gave them it in few and striking sentences; and when they heard from Jeany of the determined and disinterested part their son had acted, their eyes glowed with delight, and their hearts grew kinder aid kinder. James was happier than ever was a king upon a throne, and would suffer nobody to put little George to bed but himself. The conversation was highly...

Book British Short Fiction in the Early Nineteenth Century

Download or read book British Short Fiction in the Early Nineteenth Century written by Tim Killick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of the importance of the idea of the 'tale' within Romantic-era literature, short fiction of the period has received little attention from critics. Contextualizing British short fiction within the broader framework of early nineteenth-century print culture, Tim Killick argues that authors and publishers sought to present short fiction in book-length volumes as a way of competing with the novel as a legitimate and prestigious genre. Beginning with an overview of the development of short fiction through the late eighteenth century and analysis of the publishing conditions for the genre, including its appearance in magazines and annuals, Killick shows how Washington Irving's hugely popular collections set the stage for British writers. Subsequent chapters consider the stories and sketches of writers as diverse as Mary Russell Mitford and James Hogg, as well as didactic short fiction by authors such as Hannah More, Maria Edgeworth, and Amelia Opie. His book makes a convincing case for the evolution of short fiction into a self-conscious, intentionally modern form, with its own techniques and imperatives, separate from those of the novel.

Book The Form of Poetry in the 1820s and 1830s

Download or read book The Form of Poetry in the 1820s and 1830s written by David Stewart and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1820s and 1830s, the gap between Romanticism and Victorianism, continues to prove a difficulty for scholars. This book explores and recovers a neglected culture of poetry in those years, and it demonstrates that culture was a crucial turning point in literary history. It explores a uniquely wide range of poets, including the poetry of the literary annuals, Letitia Landon, Felicia Hemans, Robert Browning, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Thomas Hood and John Clare, placing their work in the light of new research into the conditions of the literary market. In turn, it uses that culture to open up wider theoretical issues relating to literary form, book history, print culture, gender and periodisation. The period’s doubt about poetry’s place in culture and its capacity to last prompted a dazzling range of creative experiments that reimagined the metrical, material and commercial forms of poetry.

Book British Periodicals and Romantic Identity

Download or read book British Periodicals and Romantic Identity written by M. Schoenfield and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-12-22 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Lord Byron identified the periodical industry as the "Literary Lower Empire," he registered the cultural clout that periodicals had accumulated by positioning themselves as both the predominant purveyors of scientific, economic, and social information and the arbiters of literary and artistic taste. British Periodicals and Romantic Identity explores how periodicals such as the Edinburgh, Blackwood s, and the Westminster became the repositories and creators of "public opinion." In addition, Schoenfield examines how particular figures, both inside and outside the editorial apparatus of the reviews and magazines, negotiated this public and rapidly professionalized space. Ranging from Lord Byron, whose self-identification as lord and poet anticipated his public image in the periodicals, to William Hazlitt, equally journalist and subject of the reviews, this engaging study explores both canonical figures and canon makers in the periodicals and positions them as a centralizing force in the consolidation of Romantic print culture.
