Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in the late 1980s, a series of improbable bark beetle outbreaks unsettled iconic forests and communities across western North America. An insect the size of a rice kernel eventually killed more than 30 billion pine and spruce trees from Alaska to New Mexico. Often appearing in masses larger than schools of killer whales, the beetles engineered one of the world's greatest forest die-offs since the deforestation of Europe by peasants between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries. The beetle didn't act alone. Misguided science, out-of-control logging, bad public policy, and a hundred years of fire suppression created a volatile geography that released the world's oldest forest manager from all natural constraints. Like most human empires, the beetles exploded wildly and then crashed, leaving in their wake grieving landowners, humbled scientists, hungry animals, and altered watersheds. Although climate change triggered this complex event, human arrogance assuredly set the table. With little warning, an ancient insect pointedly exposed the frailty of seemingly stable manmade landscapes. Drawing on first-hand accounts from entomologists, botanists, foresters, and rural residents, award-winning journalist Andrew Nikiforuk, investigates this unprecedented beetle plague, its startling implications, and the lessons it holds.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes the literature on the spruce beetle in the western United States, primarily in the Rocky Mountains. Information is presented on life history and behavior, host relationships, mortality agents and impacts of infestations. A section on suppression details the current status of chemicals, pheromones, trap trees and silvicultural treatments. The initial steps in managing spruce beetle populations are stated in the final section on beetle management policy.

Book excerpt: Bark Beetles: Biology and Ecology of Native and Invasive Species provides a thorough discussion of these economically important pests of coniferous and broadleaf trees and their importance in agriculture. It is the first book in the market solely dedicated to this important group of insects, and contains 15 chapters on natural history and ecology, morphology, taxonomy and phylogenetics, evolution and diversity, population dynamics, resistance, symbiotic associations, natural enemies, climate change, management strategies, economics, and politics, with some chapters exclusively devoted to some of the most economically important bark beetle genera, including Dendroctonus, Ips, Tomicus, Hypothenemus, and Scolytus. This text is ideal for entomology and forestry courses, and is aimed at scientists, faculty members, forest managers, practitioners of biological control of insect pests, mycologists interested in bark beetle-fungal associations, and students in the disciplines of entomology, ecology, and forestry. Provides the only synthesis of the literature on bark beetles Features chapters exclusively devoted to some of the most economically important bark beetle genera, such as Dendroctonus, Ips, Tomicus, Hypothenemus, and Scolytus Includes copious color illustrations and photographs that further enhance the content

Book Bark Beetle Management Ecology and Climate Change

Download or read book Bark Beetle Management Ecology and Climate Change written by Kamal J.K. Gandhi and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2021-10-28 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bark Beetle Management, Ecology, and Climate Change provides the most updated and comprehensive knowledge on the complex effects of global warming upon the economically and ecologically important bark beetle species and their host trees. This authoritative reference synthesizes information on how forest disturbances and environmental changes due to current and future climate changes alter the ecology and management of bark beetles in forested landscapes. Written by international experts on bark beetle ecology, this book covers topics ranging from changes in bark beetle distributions and addition of novel hosts due to climate change, interactions of insects with altered host physiology and disturbance regimes, ecosystem-level impacts of bark beetle outbreaks due to climate change, multi-trophic changes mediated via climate change, and management of bark beetles in altered forests and climate conditions. Bark Beetle Management, Ecology, and Climate Change is an important resource for entomologists, as well as forest health specialists, policy makers, and conservationists who are interested in multi-faceted impacts of climate change on forest insects at the organismal, population, and community-levels. The only book that addresses the impacts of global warming on bark beetles with feedback loops to forest patterns and processes Discusses altered disturbance regimes due to climate change with implications for bark beetles and associated organisms Led by a team of editors whose expertise includes entomology, pathology, ecology, forestry, modeling, and tree physiology

Book Development and Survival of the Spruce Beetle Dendroctonus Rufipennis in Stumps and Windthrow

Download or read book Development and Survival of the Spruce Beetle Dendroctonus Rufipennis in Stumps and Windthrow written by L. Safranyik and published by Canadian Museum of Civilization/Musee Canadien Des Civilisations. This book was released on 2011 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1972 a field study of spruce beetle (Dendroctonus rufipennis) population dynamics was established in central British Columbia (BC) in two adjacent timber harvesting areas. Data from the 7-year field study was analysed with respect to the effects of spruce windthrow, stumps, and other logging residue on variation in the following factors of spruce beetle populations: adult emergence, adult size and sex ratio, brood development, and brood survival.--Includes text from document.

Book Changes in Downed and Dead Woody Material Following a Spruce Beetle Outbreak on the Kenai Peninsula Alaska

Download or read book Changes in Downed and Dead Woody Material Following a Spruce Beetle Outbreak on the Kenai Peninsula Alaska written by Bethany Schulz and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The forests of the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, underwent a major spruce beetle(Dendroctonus rufipennis (Kirby)) outbreak in the 1990s. A repeated inventory of forest resources was designed to assess the effects of the resulting widespread mortality of spruce trees, the dominant component of the Kenai forests. Downed woody materials, fuel heights, and moss depths were recorded during each inventory. Changes in downed and dead woody materials are summarized by forest type and harvest activity, compiled by fuel timelag classes. Fuel heights, fine fuels, and sound large fuels increased between 1987 and 2000. Moss depths and rotten large fuels decreased. Harvested white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) showed the greatest increase of fine fuel classes.
