Book Ladies and Gentlemen on Display

Download or read book Ladies and Gentlemen on Display written by Charlene M. Boyer Lewis and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written as a dissertation in history at the U. of Virginia, this study recreates the societal mores displayed at summer resorts at Virginia Springs from 1790-1860, as this was recorded in the letters and other archives of families who sojourned there. Lewis (history, Widener U.) suggests that her history provides a new insight into plantation society by recording responses to unusual events and lack of routine. She supplements the account with some analysis of the sources for the romantic and idealistic views of this culture. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book The Battle of White Sulphur Springs

Download or read book The Battle of White Sulphur Springs written by Eric J. Wittenberg and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11-09 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though West Virginia was founded for the purpose of remaining loyal to the Union, severing ties with Virginia, home of the capital of the Confederacy, would prove difficult. West Virginia's fate would be tested on its battlegrounds. In August 1863, Union general William Woods Averell led a six-hundred-mile raid culminating in the Battle of White Sulphur Springs in Green Brier County. Colonel George S. Patton, grandfather of the legendary World War II general, met Averell with a dedicated Confederate force. After a fierce two-day battle, Patton defeated Averell, forcing him to retreat and leave West Virginia, and ultimately the Union, in the balance. Civil War historian Eric J. Wittenberg presents a fascinating in-depth analysis of the proceedings in the first book-length study of this important battle.

Book Montgomery White Sulphur Springs

Download or read book Montgomery White Sulphur Springs written by Dorothy H. Bodell and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago, Montgomery White Sulphur Springs was one of Virginia's most elegant mineral springs resorts. This book tells of its time as a Confederate hospital during the Civil War & of the nuns & the doctors who came to tend the sick, the wounded, & the smallpox victims. There are lists of the meager belongings of some of the soldiers, of the supplies ordered when the hospital was being established, of the people who worked there during the war, & of the Confederate soldiers who died there, some of whom were buried in the "Soldiers' Cemetery" nearby. The book also tells of the resort's hey-day of fun & frolic--concerts on the lawn, dancing, & socializing--& names of many of the guests. But in the twentieth century the people stopped coming. Eventually the buildings were removed & the valley returned to its quiet peace. Bodell also tells of the caretaking activities of the local chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy, of the landowners who have preserved a few of the markers & the monument, & hints at the current threat, a proposed "smart" highway.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cautionary true crime shocker of Virginia’s Elizabeth Hall, and one of the most sensational trials of an accused murderess since Lizzie Borden. On an April morning in 1914, Victor Hall was murdered in his store at Green Springs Depot. It was only hours after his competitor’s business had been torched. The Louisa County sheriff, state investigator, and railroad detectives suspected Hall's rival, one of a dozen men with viable motives. Then gossip spread that Victor’s wife, Elizabeth, had poisoned her first husband. Coupled with more sordid rumors, the unfounded accusations became irresistibly salacious headlines, whipping the state of Virginia into a frenzy for seven months. Friends and neighbors perjured themselves to become part of the front-page story. And as Hall’s own Pinkerton detective turned against her in the same mad rush to judgment, the widow found herself trapped in a nightmare that was just beginning. A century later, J.K. Brandau, husband of Elizabeth Hall’s great-granddaughter, finally unearths the timely and tragic story in which truth didn’t stand a chance against the most public, lurid, and sensational lies.

Book excerpt: The undisputed master of the tough thriller, New York Times bestselling author Stephen Hunter delivers an “exciting and intelligent” (The Wall Street Journal) masterpiece set in 1940s Arkansas, where law and corruption ricochet like slugs from a .45 automatic. Earl Swagger is tough as hell. But even tough guys have their secrets. Plagued by the memory of his abusive father, apprehensive about his own impending parenthood, Earl is a decorated ex-Marine of absolute integrity—and overwhelming melancholy. Now he’s about to face his biggest, bloodiest challenge yet. It is the summer of 1946, organized crime’s garish golden age, when American justice seems to have gone to seed for good. Nowhere is this truer than in Hot Springs, Arkansas, the reigning capital of corruption. When the district attorney vows to bring down the mob, Earl is recruited to run the show. As casino raids erupt into nerve-shattering combat amid screaming prostitutes and fleeing johns, the body count mounts—along with the suspense in this “riveting” (Los Angeles Times), “richly told tale” (The San Francisco Examiner).
