Book The Spirituality of Following Jesus in John s Gospel

Download or read book The Spirituality of Following Jesus in John s Gospel written by Sean Seongik Kim and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on "following Jesus" has mostly been done in terms of what Jesus' followers ought to do. In this unprecedented study, Kim presents "following Jesus" in John's Gospel through the perspective of what Jesus does for his followers. "Following Jesus" is a journey towards the place where Jesus leads his followers, that is, to a relationship with the Father. It is ultimately participating in the Son's communion with the Father. Jesus, who was in the bosom of the Father, descended from him and ascends to him, taking his followers with him, so that they may be with him where he is with the Father in glory and love. Kim develops this thesis by examining the term akolouthein ("to follow") and correlated motifs in John's Gospel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Church as a whole and all her Pastors, like Christ, must set out to lead people out of the desert, towards the place of life, towards friendship with the Son of God, towards the One who gives us life, and life in abundance."– Pope Benedict XVI, Apostolic Letter, Porta Fidei Becoming a disciple of Christ was no easy task in the time of Jesus and it continues to be the ultimate challenge. It is about combining one's head and heart to not only become His student in an intellectual sense but also "conforming" to His person, imitating His sacrificial love and, by means of faith and baptism, actually taking on His identity as the Son of God. This book from renowned Catholic biblical scholar Daniel J. Harrington is divided into four parts, each of which deals with six key New Testament passages relating to the theme of following Jesus. Part One: Hearing Jesus' Call in the Synoptic Gospels Part Two: Growing in Appreciation of Jesus in John's Gospel Part Three: Paul as a Disciple of Jesus Part Four: Other Ways of Being a Disciple of Jesus Harrington brings the concepts home in an accessible and actionable way through simplified summaries at the end of each section, along with the proactive Think, Pray, and Act reflections and Ten Points on Discipleship for support and guidance. Following Jesus: What the New Testament Teaches Us is perfect for individual or group study as we share in the universal call to discipleship.

Book Following Jesus in the Footsteps of Francis

Download or read book Following Jesus in the Footsteps of Francis written by Fr John Anglin and published by Tate Publishing & Enterprises. This book was released on 2015-11-24 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was he just a thirteenth-century hippy who preached to birds and loved animals and the great outdoors? Or was there more to this man? Why has St. Francis of Assisi captured the imagination of so many, even well-beyond the boundaries of the Catholic Church, capturing the imagination not only of other Christians but even of non-believers? Fr. John Anglin, OFM, a Catholic priest for forty-four years and a Franciscan friar for fifty years shows how this holy man from the thirteenth-century chose a life of living the gospel of Jesus Christ in a way that everyone could follow. In Following Jesus in the Footsteps of Francis, Fr. John explains the spiritual vision of St. Francis and those who came after him. He sets forth the theological and spiritual vision of this great saint and explains how this vision shapes the lives of those who would follow Jesus in this way, whether they are members of the Franciscan order or ordinary folks who simply want to live out the vision of this holy man. Above all, he shows how this eight-century-old vision still inspires people today.

Book The Spirituality of the Gospels

Download or read book The Spirituality of the Gospels written by Stephen C. Barton and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-09-06 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probably no other works of ancient literature have had a greater influence on religious life and thought than the Four Gospels. Certainly no other works have been the subject of such intense study by those determined to learn more about the Gospels' central, often enigmatic, figure. And yet, despite the bewildering variety of scholarly approaches, few have sought to interpret the Gospels in terms of the distinctive spirituality that each contains and seeks to evoke in its readers. That is the aim of this important new book -- to help today's readers explore what each Gospel has to offer when viewed by its own right as a classic of Western spirituality. Written in a clear, non-technical style, the fresh perspectives this work presents will open new vistas on the familiar stories about the life, teaching, and ultimate significance of Jesus.

Book Discipleship in Community

Download or read book Discipleship in Community written by Mark E. Powell and published by ACU Press. This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus said, “Go and make disciples.” So, what exactly are we doing? Western churches face a difficult future marked by numerical decline and evident signs of shrinking cultural influence. But Discipleship in Community wisely asks the church to go back to basics. What does it mean to follow Jesus? What does a life of discipleship look like? Trusted scholars Mark Powell, John Mark Hicks, and Greg McKinzie invite you to consider how good theology can lead to better, more intentional discipleship. In Discipleship in Community you will learn • how the language of Trinity matters to everyday disciples; • how God’s plan and mission is unfolding and how, as disciples, we can participate in that mission; • how the Bible is more than a book of facts and how it guides us into a relationship with God; • how baptism and the Lord’s Supper allow us to experience God’s saving power; and • how local churches can encourage intentional discipleship.

Book Spirituality in John s Gospel

Download or read book Spirituality in John s Gospel written by Gabriel-Mary Fiore and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourth Gospel has been known as the “spiritual gospel” since the second century, but only recently have biblical scholars attempted to express the unique spirituality found in that sacred text. Surprisingly, no consensus has emerged even after a century of research. Thus, while John’s Gospel is widely admired as a vibrant source of Christian piety, the distinct features of its spirituality remain unclear. Fr. Fiore addresses this problem from the fresh perspective of spiritual theology. Capitalizing on a century of Johannine biblical scholarship, he uses the interdisciplinary methods of spiritual theology to bring new data to the study of the Gospel and solutions to many lingering questions: How did ancient readers understand what scholars now refer to as the Gospel’s spirituality? How does that ecclesial reading compare to the analysis of modern critical exegesis? What makes Johannine spirituality special among other forms of Christian piety? How does the question of the Gospel’s authorship impact our understanding of its spirituality? Does the Gospel contain what we now call “mysticism”? In what ways is John’s spirituality still relevant for Christians today? Students of Christian spirituality and Johannine exegesis alike will find here stimulating historical and theological analysis of the Gospel’s spirituality.

Book Exploring the Spirituality of the Gospels

Download or read book Exploring the Spirituality of the Gospels written by Patrick J. Hartin and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within each of the four gospels there is a foundational spirit, a spirituality of the gospels. That is to say, each gospel contains rich images and values central to the Vision of the person of Jesus' and to the path toward spiritual transformation in his image. In this volume Patrick Hartin first looks at each gospel and asks such questions as Who is Jesus? and What transformation does this encounter with Jesus invite? Hartin then follows with examples of people who have appropriated the transformative power of these particular spiritualties from Saint Antony and Dorothy Day to Saint Augustine and Archbishop Romero. Hartin's twofold approach gives us a deeper appreciation for the spiritual dimension of the gospels and helps us to be transformed in Christ by their message and Vision. Patrick J. Hartin was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. He studied at the Gregorian University in Rome and is an ordained priest of the Diocese of Spokane, Washington. He presently teaches courses in the New Testament and in Classical Civilizations at Gonzaga University. Download or read book Following Jesus written by Henri J. M. Nouwen and published by Convergent Books. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Timeless wisdom for life from one of the great spiritual masters of our age.”—James Martin, S.J., author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage In this never-before-published work of inspiration, the bestselling author of The Return of the Prodigal Son offers a compelling case for why Christianity is still relevant, beautiful, intelligent, and necessary in the modern world. At one of the lowest points in Henri Nouwen’s life, he gave a series of lectures on the importance of following Jesus in an age of anxiety. Drawn from those talks, this new work reveals what sustained Nouwen to remain faithful to the teachings of Jesus and led him to become an icon of compassion and vulnerability. Here he writes eloquently about calling and purpose, fear and hope. And he explains why—with so many choices available to the twenty-first-century seeker—the greatest reward for those looking for spiritual direction is rediscovering Jesus’s teaching on love. Along the way, Nouwen offers warm, insightful, practical habits to help readers navigate the narrow, sometimes arduous, but ultimately fulfilling road of conviction and faith. Praise for Following Jesus “Few writers have influenced me more than Henri Nouwen. These newly published lectures offer fresh and timely insights amid the familiar cadences of Nouwen’s prose, written from a place of deep anxiety but even deeper hope.”—John Inazu, professor of political science, Washington University in St. Louis, author of Confident Pluralism “In Following Jesus, beloved pastor and spiritual mentor Henri Nouwen guides the reader on the journey he has traveled as a follower of Jesus. Without minimizing the anxieties, fears, and brokenness that touch down in every reader’s story, Nouwen gently leads the way into a life that centers on Jesus and engulfs the follower with God’s love, a sense of belonging, and a purpose that endures. Truly a wise and welcome word for anyone in this age of anxiety.”—Carolyn Custis James, author of Half the Church: Recapturing God’s Global Vision for Women and Finding God in the Margins
