Book The Spiritual Industrial Complex

Download or read book The Spiritual Industrial Complex written by Jonathan P. Herzog and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2011-08-05 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his farewell address, Dwight D. Eisenhower warned the nation of the perils of the military-industrial complex. But as Jonathan Herzog shows in this insightful history, Eisenhower had spent his presidency contributing to another, lesser known, Cold War collaboration: the spiritual-industrial complex. This fascinating volume shows that American leaders in the early Cold War years considered the conflict to be profoundly religious; they saw Communism not only as godless but also as a sinister form of religion. Fighting faith with faith, they deliberately used religious beliefs and institutions as part of the plan to defeat the Soviet enemy. Herzog offers an illuminating account of the resultant spiritual-industrial complex, chronicling the rhetoric, the programs, and the policies that became its hallmarks. He shows that well-known actions like the addition of the words "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance were a small part of a much larger and relatively unexplored program that promoted religion nationwide. Herzog shows how these efforts played out in areas of American life both predictable and unexpected--from pulpits and presidential appeals to national faith drives, military training barracks, public school classrooms, and Hollywood epics. Millions of Americans were bombarded with the message that the religious could not be Communists, just a short step from the all-too-common conclusion that the irreligious could not be true Americans.Though the spiritual-industrial complex declined in the 1960s, its statutes, monuments, and sentiments live on as bulwarks against secularism and as reminders that the nation rests upon the groundwork of religious faith. They continue to serve as valuable allies for those defending the place of religion in American life.

Book excerpt: Practical principles, with illustrations from military history, for winning spiritual battles and living a victorious Christian life In the Christian life, one fact is crystal clear: we are at war. It involves every Christian-and collectively the entire Church-and it is a holy war. It does not involve physical combat; it is against spiritual enemies. It is a hard-fought war, demanding everything a believer has and is. But it is also a war that has already been won, for the battle is the Lord's, and He long ago determined the outcome. But to do their part in this war, individual believers must engage the spiritual enemies with the weapons and equipment with which God has endowed them. And we must defeat the enemy using the organization that God has provided. We must follow His command-and-control system, get our necessary supplies using the logistical system He has provided, employ His intelligence network that reveals the enemy's methods, and follow the strategy and tactics that Jesus Christ, our Commander-in-Chief, has determined for our combat. If we do, we will live victorious and joyous lives, fulfilling our God-given purpose in this life. We can learn about all of this through God's Word, but His truths are also illustrated through the events that have occurred in human military history. This book uses both, surveying the military history of Israel from Abram's operation to rescue Lot through the fall of Jerusalem and examining our spiritual warfare in the light of military history and modern military organization.

Download or read book The Spiritual Danger of Donald Trump written by Ronald J. Sider and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What should Christians think about Donald Trump? His policies, his style, his personal life? Thirty evangelical Christians (listed below) wrestle with these tough questions. They are Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. They don't all agree, but they seek to let Christ be the Lord of their political views. They seek to apply biblical standards to difficult debates about our current political situation. Vast numbers of white evangelicals enthusiastically support Donald Trump. Do biblical standards on truth, justice, life, freedom, and personal integrity warrant or challenge that support? How does that support of President Trump affect the image of Christianity in the larger culture? Around the world? Many younger evangelicals today are rejecting evangelical Christianity, even Christianity itself. To what extent is that because of widespread evangelical support for Donald Trump? Don't read this book to find support for your views. Read it to be challenged--with facts, reason, and biblical principles. With contributions from: Michael W. Download or read book S W A T Training Manual written by Shaolin Abrams and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's a great war being waged in the world today; and it's not a conflict between nations, tribes, or government leaders. It's not a rebellion or coup; but it's an important invisible battle taking place in the spirit world. The Bible states that GOD's people are destroyed because of lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6). One of the main areas in which Believers are being defeated due to lack of knowledge is in spiritual warfare. The early Church viewed their spiritual experience in terms of warfare, and military terminology is used throughout the New Testament. Protection was seen in the Armor of GOD, and the Word of GOD was compared to a sword. Satan's attacks were called fiery darts; and faith was the "good fight" and Believers were told to "war a good warfare." The early Church knew they were engaged in an intense spiritual struggle; and the same spiritual battle continues today, but instead of fighting the enemy, Believers are often building great church buildings, producing musical dramas, holding fellowship meetings, and fighting one another while this great spiritual battle wages around them. Satan has even intensified his attacks against a church that has withdrawn from the front lines of battle; and in these perilous and evil days are upon us; it's even more important for Believers to understand spiritual warfare than in the early days of church history. The Apostle Paul warned: 2 Timothy 3:1; "This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come." In order to be properly prepared for these perilous times, renewed emphasis must be placed on the strategies of spiritual warfare; because the Christian life is war, and the sooner we recognize and prepare for it; the sooner we will experience victory. Luke 14:31 says; "What king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?" No king ever entered into a battle without a careful examination of his resources and development of battle strategies; but in essence, that's what we are doing in this training manual. We are making a careful evaluation of the strategy, weapons, and power available to us to win the war against our enemy, Satan. In the military world, "strategy" is the science of forming and carrying out military operations; and it is the method or plan which leads to the goal of victory.

Book excerpt: "Soldiers of the Cross" presents a Christian life potentially as that of a soldier of Christ. The soldier is enrolled in the army of Christ and is involved in a spiritual conflict. The battle is fought in the mind and involves God and his angels on one hand and Satan and his demons on the other. The spiritual conflict, termed "spiritual warfare," is waged daily, and the aim is to kill, steal, and destroy God's soldiers by Satan so as to be with them in hell. God, the commander of the Spiritual Armed Forces of Jesus, is there to grant eternal life and deliver his children from Satan's control, thereby granting them rest and joy in the Holy Spirit in the New Jerusalem. The book exposes Satan's schemes and gives spiritual insight to the spiritual warfare at hand. Student Dr. Charles Kapungwe is the author of the must-read sequel to this book, "The Ministry of Deliverance" and "So God Created Man in His Own Image."
