Book excerpt: Cozy up with ten tales of ghostly lore. This is the season of many sacred October and early November holidays such as: Samhain, Day of the Dead Dia de los Muertos, All Saints Day/All Souls Day, and all those blessed holidays around Halloween, where many celebrate the thinning of the veil, and honor spirits in one form or another. Yet, this is not the end of the celebrating . . . with Winter Solstice in December, along with the Victorian tradition of telling ghost stories, many folktale traditions are woven into the Christmas and Yule Season, and it is here that we like to keep the traditions of lore and ghost stories of your going with retellings and new stories to share.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the sacred botany and the pagan origins and rituals of Christmas • Analyzes the symbolism of the many plants associated with Christmas • Reveals the shamanic rituals that are at the heart of the Christmas celebration The day on which many commemorate the birth of Christ has its origins in pagan rituals that center on tree worship, agriculture, magic, and social exchange. But Christmas is no ordinary folk observance. It is an evolving feast that over the centuries has absorbed elements from cultures all over the world--practices that give plants and plant spirits pride of place. In fact, the symbolic use of plants at Christmas effectively transforms the modern-day living room into a place of shamanic ritual. Christian Rätsch and Claudia Müller-Ebeling show how the ancient meaning of the botanical elements of Christmas provides a unique view of the religion that existed in Europe before the introduction of Christianity. The fir tree was originally revered as the sacred World Tree in northern Europe. When the church was unable to drive the tree cult out of people’s consciousness, it incorporated the fir tree by dedicating it to the Christ child. Father Christmas in his red-and-white suit, who flies through the sky in a sleigh drawn by reindeer, has his mythological roots in the shamanic reindeer-herding tribes of arctic Europe and Siberia. These northern shamans used the hallucinogenic fly agaric mushroom, which is red and white, to make their soul flights to the other world. Apples, which figure heavily in Christmas baking, are symbols of the sun god Apollo, so they find a natural place at winter solstice celebrations of the return of the sun. In fact, the authors contend that the emphasis of Christmas on green plants and the promise of the return of life in the dead of winter is just an adaptation of the pagan winter solstice celebration.

Book excerpt: With prose and beautiful illustrations guiding you, a world of enchantment awaits as you travel to meet many of the most beloved characters of Christmas time - the many names, faces, and global traditions of Santa Claus. Created with both children and adults in mind, The Spirits of Christmas: A Celebration of Yuletide Icons from Around the World is as fitting sitting on a nightstand for bedtime stories as it is on a coffee table as a conversation piece. And so it begins: "In the crisp embrace of winter, as the world adorns itself in a festive cloak, there's a quiet magic that stirs in the air. It's a season where legends from corners far and wide come alive, each contributing uniquely to the holiday spirit. From the rooftops of Amsterdam where Sinterklaas leaves thoughtful gifts, to the starlit skies of Italy where La Befana flies on her broomstick, each iconic figure brings a distinct flavor of joy and wonder. These timeless characters, woven into the fabric of various cultures, do more than just fill stockings or leave presents under trees. In Finland, Joulupukki, the Yule Goat, brings not only gifts but also the promise of light in the darkest time of the year. In the bustling streets of New York, Santa Claus, with his hearty laugh and twinkling eyes, embodies the spirit of giving and the joy of togetherness. These figures, whether they tread softly through the snow or glide across the night sky, are not just bearers of material gifts but of something deeper - a sense of enchantment, a spirit of good cheer, a touch of the miraculous, an infusion of hope into our everyday lives. They each remind us of the universal joys of the season: the warmth of family, the excitement of anticipation, the pleasure of giving. They are a testament to the enduring power of myth and magic, and how, year after year, they bring us together in a shared experience of wonder and joy. Through them, the holiday spirit is kept aglow, lighting up hearts and homes around the globe. Please enjoy this magical, worldwide sleigh ride."
