Materialism, which denies or ignores the supernatural, and concentrates its heed on ameliorating the outward conditions of human life; criticism, which is clever at analysis and dissection, but cannot construct a foundation on which the religious faculty may build and rest; and a fine literary taste, which has greatly developed of late, and is disposed to judge of power by force of words or by delicacy of expression. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Person and Ministry of the Holy Spirit While the writer was evangelizing in Europe, he received a letter from his friend, A. C. Dixon, of Baltimore, requesting his help in organizing and supervising a Conference in that city. On my return home Mr. Dixon visited me, and together we sketched the programme of the subjects, nominated speakers, and arranged concerning dates and details. On Mr. Dixon's return to Baltimore he consulted with the pastors, who, with him, formed a committee to prosecute the work in the city. To this earnest committee is due, under God, the great success which crowned the Convention. The pleasant task of correspondence with speakers and adjustment of subjects fell to my lot, as on other similar occasions. Many brethren, originally appointed to present the subjects, were detained in various ways, but others cheerfully undertook the office of teacher. The promise, "Them that honour Me I will honour," sustained our faith, and God permitted our ears to hear marvelous things throughout this four days' meeting. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of Christ: Thoughts on the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the Believer and the Church That there are but few believers Who realize this walk with God, this life in God, such as their Father has prepared for them, no one will deny. Nor will it admit of dispute what the cause of this failure is. It is acknowledged on all hands that the Holy Spirit, through whose Divine Omnipotence this inner revelation of the Son and the Father in the life and the likeness of the believer is to take place, is not known or acknowledged in the Church as He should be. In our preaching and in our practice He does not hold that place of prominence which He has in God's plan and in His promises. While our creed on the Holy Spirit is orthodox and scriptural, His presence and power in the life of believers, in the ministry of the word, in the witness of the Church to the world, is not what the word promises or God's plan requires. Download or read book The Proper Office and Spirit of the Ministry written by James May and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-16 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Proper Office and Spirit of the Ministry: A Sermon Preached Before the Society of the Alumni of the Theological Seminary of Virginia, and Published by Request of the Society Some things in the address of St. Paul to the elders of the church of Ephesus, are proper to the time and occa s10n of its original delivery. But it is not difficult to generalise the topics, and separate what is peculiar to the original speaker and hearers of the charge, and give our attention to those things ln it which are common to all ministers of the gospel. The spirit of St. Paulon this occasion is one which ought to be possessed by all minis-r ters of it. The proper office of the ministry is also stated to testify the gospel of the grace of God 3 for this lan guage is exegetical of the preceding phrase, the minis try which I have received of the Lord Jesus. Imay readily excuse myself from discussing on this occasron the constitution of the Christian ministry, for that sub ject is with me in these walls official, and I appear among you simply as a brother in the fellowship of the alumm of this Seminary. Besides, one may be pardoned for thinking that the subject does not lack sufficient attention in our time. There seems to be no danger just now of the claims of our pecullar ecclesiastical polity being over looked in the church. Book He That Is Spiritual Christian Classics Reprint

Download or read book He That Is Spiritual Christian Classics Reprint written by Lewis Sperry Chafer and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-12-16 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He That is Spiritual is a wonderful book on the work of the Holy Spirit for the believer at the moment he believes in Christ and the Holy Spirit's ministry in his life after salvation. It is one of the few books that have been more warmly received by Bible teachers and students. He That is Spiritual also defines true Christian living and unfolds the biblical teaching concerning spirituality -- what it is, and how it is secured. Nothing could be more important to Christians than the theme of this book. Its sound teaching corrects many false impressions and presents a scriptural pattern for the full life in Christ.

Book The Congregational Lecture

Download or read book The Congregational Lecture written by William Hendry Stowell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Congregational Lecture: The Work of the Spirit The theme expressed in the title of this volume is one of which it can scarcely be said, with truth, that it has been neglected in any age of the Christian era. A history of the doctrines taught concerning the Holy Spirit would be interesting, as illustrating the workings of the human mind; it is occasionally adduced in the following pages, for the purpose of showing into what extremes good men have been led by speculation. It is presumed that my readers are not strangers to the principal works relating to the Spirit which have appeared in our language. Of Dr Owen's volume, Bishop Heber has observed, "it is held in high estimation; and in default of others, has been often recommended to the perusal, not of Dissenters only, but of the younger clergy themselves. But in Owen, though his learning and piety were doubtless great, and though few have excelled him in the enviable talent of expressing and exciting devotional feelings, yet have his peculiar sentiments and political situation communicated a tinge to the general character of his volume, unfavourable alike to rational belief and to religious charity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit and the Bride This volume, consisting mainly of sermons delivered in Manchester Cathedral and St. Paul's, is intended to be a sequel to "Christus Crucifixus," which was published two years ago. As its title, "The Spirit and the Bride," is intended to suggest, the subjects which are here treated range over that resurrection life of spiritual experience and believing witness which, alike for the Christian community and for the individual disciple, is the direct result of the work wrought once for all by the Lord in His own proper Person. Book Or Life Lived Under the Guidance of the Holy Spirit Classic Reprint

Download or read book Or Life Lived Under the Guidance of the Holy Spirit Classic Reprint written by George Body and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Or, Life Lived Under the Guidance of the Holy Spirit A true Pastor. But I am as certain that muchpastoral direction to-day is immoral and dangerous. No director can be the mind or will or conscience of another without bringing the directed under a tyranny which is as immoral as it is degrading. Nothing can set each Christian free from personal responsibility for his conduct. All moral decisions must be the act of the individual: they cannot be rightly made for him by any other, he he Priest or Layman. A true Spiritual direction is educative. It leads the directed to follow the guidance of the Living Lord by a free and personal conformity with His known Will it guides to true liberty. But not unfrequently direction, as used to-day, guides to a servile and unintelligent obedience to a fallible director (frequently one whose fallibility is very apparent), in which the surrender of mind and will and conscience is demanded and yielded. From such a tyranny may all God's children be set free, to find in the ever-present ministry of the Living Lord, by His in-dwelling Spirit, that true Direction which is at once wise and free. Book The Spirit in the New Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Spirit in the New Testament Classic Reprint written by Ernest Findlay Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit in the New Testament NO doctrine has proved so fruitful in modern Christianity as that of the Spirit. During the last century, and more especially in our own generation, the social order has undergone profound changes; our knowledge of nature and of the process of human development has been immensely widened; the documents of the faith have been subjected to critical inquiry, with the result that many of the old assumptions have given way. If our religion has been able to maintain itself under the altered conditions this has been chiefly due to the doctrine of the Spirit which it has inherited from the early church. The disciples believed that along with his message Jesus had imparted the revealing and life-giving Spirit. His Gospel was not bound to a fixed tradition but was capable of endless growth and self-renewal. It could take into itself new elements, and keep pace with the world's movement, and appeal with a fresh meaning to every age. This great conception was long obscured under the various authoritative creeds, but is now finding its rightful place. Teachers of every school are guided by it more and more in their interpretation of the Christian message. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evangelist: His Ministry and Message There is a disposition in these times to belittle the work and the office of the evangelist. We can understand this, so far as the modernists are concerned, because the whole appeal of the true evangelist is to the saving power of God in Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit. His only message is the gospel. The modernist either denies or has lost faith (if he ever had any) in the gospel. He denies the necessity of being born again. His message is character, not calvary. His appeal is not to the Holy Spirit and His work of convicting of sin, and persuading and enabling the Sinner to believe in Jesus Christ as his one and only Saviour. He appeals to the will and self-respect of man, so we can understand the modernist's position and attitude to the evangelist and evangelistic work. In addition to the opposition of the modernists, there is a tendency in many churches to criticize and belittle the evangelists, and to ignore them in all church plans, or to encourage the pastors to carry on evangelistic campaigns Without them. This is contrary to the Word of God and the historical practice of the Church. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
