Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glory of the Pines: A Tale of the Ontonagon In some instances names of the old forest friends with whom it has been my pleasure either to work or play have been retained. Their good nature will not permit them to resent what seemed necessary in recounting the scenes of a happy fellowship with them. Fictitious names for such sincere men and women seem a kind of sacrilege. It is here taken for granted that people generally appre ciate the portrayal of life where reality and the note of honor and manhood emerge sur prisingly from rugged and unconventional men. With this thought in mind there are here set down some of the striking features of a woods parish, enlarged upon now and then. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of the Mountains But, listening for a day, even for an hour, to the sounds that echo in this cup of the hills, one comes to know that life is ever present. The evidences are faint and far, but the ear makes sure of them - yodeling and calling, barking of dogs, crowing of cocks in the early morning. Listen l - a horn is wound away off toward the gap. An axe rings on the crystal of a winter day. Some boy must needs advertise his riches of both ammunition and corn whiskey at once by several shots fired in quick succession at noth ing at all. Hoofs clatter over the shale at the ford, far below, and sometimes the music of a hunt or a dancing party continues nearly through the night. Book Two Twelfth Century Texts on Chinese Painting

Download or read book Two Twelfth Century Texts on Chinese Painting written by Robert Maeda and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two Twelfth-Century Texts on Chinese Painting presents two texts in translation that provide dual insight into the Painting Academy of Emperor Hui-tsung and the literati school of painting. The Shan-shui ch’un-ch’uan chi is a treatise for beginning landscape painters dated to the Hsüan-ho era. The treatise was written by Han Cho, a reputed member of the Academy, but the text was not specifically directed at Academicians. The treatise collects and orders previous writings on landscape painting; one of Han Cho’s main goals is to list all landscape definitions and their practical application in painting. Yet his view is more detached and analytical than a stereotypical Academy painter, revealing an approach reminiscent of Confucian scholarship and literati painting as well. The Hua-chi by Teng Ch’un is a history of painting that was written as a sequel to two earlier painting histories. In ten chapters, Teng Ch’un compiles facts and critical evaluations of painters from 1075 to 1167, as well as listings of selected masterpieces. Teng Ch’un provides more specific information about the Academy than Han Cho, discussing its organization and examination system, and noting that “form-likeness” and adherence to rules were leading standards for painting in the Academy. On the other hand, he thinks that painting should transmit “soul,” not just “form.” Thus, Teng Ch’un writes the history of both the establishment values of the Academy and the intellectual tendencies of the literati.
