Book Mapping Intellectual Building and the Construction of Thought and Reason

Download or read book Mapping Intellectual Building and the Construction of Thought and Reason written by Fathi Hasan Malkawi and published by International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT). This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this work is thought, a distinguishing characteristic of human beings that the Creator has dignified humankind with. The book attempts to provide an in-depth conceptualization of intellectual building. Man’s intellect is awoken by his/her surroundings, by his need to make sense of reality, his own existence, and a desire to know. How he articulates this reality to himself, interprets, and organizes information as it presents itself to his conscience, makes decisions, takes action, and draws conclusions based on whatever framework he gives value to, whether spiritual or other, is the subject of this book. The work reflects on many interesting aspects of human inner communication, including the workings of logic, and in today’s information age, the control and manipulation of information by others for personal gain. What is meant by the concept of ‘thought’? What place does it hold, and in what relation does it stand to the concepts of knowledge, culture, philosophy, literature, and fiqh (deep understanding, jurisprudence)? These are some of the issues addressed.

Download or read book A Protestant Purgatory written by Laurie Throness and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the penitentiary get its name? Why did the English impose long prison sentences? Did class and economic conflict really lie at the heart of their correctional system? In a groundbreaking study that challenges the assumptions of modern criminal justice scholarship, Laurie Throness answers many questions like these by exposing the deep theological roots of the judicial institutions of eighteenth-century Britain. The book offers a scholarly account of the passage of the Penitentiary Act of 1779, combining meticulous attention to detail with a sweeping theological overview of the century prior to the Act. But it is not just an intellectual history. It tells a fascinating story of a broader religious movement, and the people and beliefs that motivated them to create a new institution. The work is original because it relies so completely on original sources. It is mystical because it mingles heavenly with earthly justice. It is authoritative because of its explanatory power. Its anecdotes and insights, poetry and song, provide intriguing glimpses into another era strangely familiar to our own. Of special interest to social and legal historians, criminologists, and theologians, this work will also appeal to a wider audience of those who are interested in Christianity's impact on Western culture and institutions.

Book Existential Psychology East West Volume 2

Download or read book Existential Psychology East West Volume 2 written by Louis Hoffman and published by University Professors Press. This book was released on 2020-06-17 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existential-Psychology East-West (Volume 2) emerged from continued dialogues on existential psychology, particularly existential-humanistic psychology, in Southeast Asia. This volume includes authors from Southeast Asia, India, Africa, Europe, and the United States, including Xuefu Wang, Louise Sundararajan, Mark Yang, Louis Hoffman, Al Dueck, Albert Chan, Donna Rockwell, Ilene Serlin, Rainbow Tin Hung Ho, Rochelle Suri, Meili Pinto, and Anthony K. Nkyi. The book is divided into three sections: 1) Theory and Practice, 2) Applications and Case Illustrations, and 3) Existential Perspectives on Cultural Myths. The first three chapter focus on Zhi Mian Therapy, an indigenous Chinese approach to existential psychology. These chapters are the most comprehensive overview of Zhi Mian Therapy in English to date. Other theory chapters include a discussion of international psychology from an existential-humanistic perspective, the concept of Sui Wu Fu Xing, men’s violence against women, Sunyata, and the concept of savoring. The second section focuses on a variety of case illustrations to illuminate the practice of existential therapy in different cultural contexts. The final section expands upon existential perspectives of myths as developed in Rollo May’s The Cry for Myth and Existential Psychology East-West (Volume 1). Seven myths from different cultural contexts are examined from an existential perspective. Along with Volume 2, Existential-Psychology East-West (Volume 2) represents a landmark contribution to the existential psychology literature.

Book The Spirit of Our Laws Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Spirit of Our Laws Classic Reprint written by Herman Cohen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of Our Laws A great many people take an interest in the law without being lawyers or litigants or specialists of any sort. They like to understand something of what is going on around them, and for their law they have to trust to snatches from the newspapers. Though, possibly, both writer and reader are well-educated persons, the exact point or points on which the report turns is almost certain to be missed, for neither has any training to catch it. Hence the frequent exclamation, I can't understand this case; however could such a decision have been arrived at? And, of course, the bewilderment is greater where there is any desire even to scratch beneath the surface. Yet between the formal study of the law and the perusal of the daily newspaper there is no satisfaction for the amateur reader, better, perhaps, known as the general reader. A professed lawyer, of course, would not dream of trusting an ordinary newspaper report (with a few exceptions) for practical purposes, even for his own guidance; for he requires at least a certain degree of accuracy, and may require the highest. Book Saddharma Pu ar ka

Download or read book Saddharma Pu ar ka written by and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Saddharma-Puṇḍarīka (The Lotus of the True Law), one of the Mahayana sutras, is perhaps the single most important Mahayana Buddhist work. Composed originally in India, some sections written as early as the beginning of the Christian era, the Lotus is held in enormous esteem by the Northern schools of Buddhism and by Chinese and Japanese Buddhists, particularly Tendai and later developments. Described as "the most eminent" of all the sutras, "the crown jewel" in which "all Buddha-laws are succinctly taught," the Lotus is a keystone in the education of every serious Buddhist. This sutra is essentially a collection of responses, explanations, ex cathedra lectures, and the like, bearing chiefly upon metaphysical issues: the nature of Buddhahood, the concept of nirvana, the Bodhisattva ideal, the rewards of the faithful, and other theoretical matters, that have become essential dogma in all Buddhist schools that have since arisen. A transfiguration of the traditional Buddha-situation is presented: the historical Buddha, the Tathagata or Sakyamuni, is seen in his eternal, supernatural aspect; he sits surrounded by an array of gods, arahats, demons, bodhisattvas, gandharvas, monks and nuns--all eager to hear the infinitely wise utterances of the Great Teacher. The revelations are made sometimes by Sakyamuni, addressing his historical sangha, including Ananda, Sariputra, Kasyapa, et al., and at other times by the Buddhas of the past and the future, Manjusri and Maitreya. This edition contains the complete translation of the Lotus, rendered from Sanskrit by Professor Kern. He has also written a critical introduction to the work and has clarified and supplemented the text by means of numerous footnotes." -- Publisher's description
