Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's a spirit to do! The prophet Elijah sends Serach out of the Garden of Eden to assist Hillel Kramer, the troubled rabbi of Kehillat Shalom. When she disguises herself as Sara, the new office volunteer, the rabbi eludes her, but congregants besiege her. Perhaps she should help Ruchamah, a widow afraid to fall in love again. Or Simon, a violinist who's wife left him with a young son. Possibly she could turn her attention to Ida caring for her husband, afflicted with Alzheimers. And then, there's that administrator, Marcia, who treats her like a servant. All she has to do is provide Ruchamah with someone to love, find a mother for Simon's young son, remove Ida's husband from the house, ignore Marcia and come up with a master plan for the rabbi, but her interventions backfire. Hillel's troubles increase. Not only does she fail to help the rabbi, she inadvertently becomes attached to the congregants. An infuriated Elijah orders her back to the Garden. Torn between her desire to remain at Kehillat Shalom and her duty to return to the Garden, Serach makes a choice that will transform the rabbi, the community and herself.

Book Building Blocks of the Soul

Download or read book Building Blocks of the Soul written by Matityahu Glazerson and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this intensive study of Hebrew letters and words, Rabbi Matityahu Glazerson uses gematria (interpretive Jewish numerology) to reveal the mysterious correlation between Jewish ethics and practices, and the numeric values of the Hebrew words which name and describe them. This profound and lucid exploration uncovers the deep spiritual resonance of Jewish thought, and explains a variety of theological issues using the ancient Hebrew language as a key to understanding. Rabbi Glazerson compares the Hebrew letter to the atomjust as the atom is the basic module of physical life, so the Hebrew letter is the basic component that contains the essence of Jewish spiritual life. Hence, Jews have used gematria for centuries to understand spiritual and moral teachings embedded in the Hebrew language. The book begins with a detailed explanation of gematria, including: the basic concept that each Hebrew letter has an independent numeric value; the variety of ways in which the letters of a specific word can be explicated in order to compute the word's numeric value; and the relationship between seemingly unconnected words based on their related numeric values, which is the foundation of gematria interpretation. Anyone interested in gematria will find Rabbi Glazerson's introduction invaluable in both its scope and its accessibility. Rabbi Glazerson postulates that "Hebrew, the holy language, is the source of all languages", and he provides many examples of Hebrew words that are the roots of words in English and other languages. This hypothesis also opens a detailed discussion of specific Hebrew letters and their mystical significance, thereby providing a background for further investigation of the partnership between Hebrew letters and Jewish concepts and activities.

Book excerpt: From the bestselling authors of The Nine Questions People Ask About Judaism comes a completely revised and updated edition of a modern classic that reflects the dangerous rise in antisemitism during the twenty-first century. The very word Jew continues to arouse passions as does no other religious, national, or political name. Why have Jews been the object of the most enduring and universal hatred in history? Why did Hitler consider murdering Jews more important than winning World War II? Why has the United Nations devoted more time to tiny Israel than to any other nation on earth? In this seminal study, Dennis Prager and Joseph Telushkin attempt to uncover and understand the roots of antisemitism -- from the ancient world to the Holocaust to the current crisis in the Middle East. This postmillennial edition of Why the Jews? offers new insights and unparalleled perspectives on some of the most recent, pressing developments in the contemporary world, including: • The replicating of Nazi antisemitism in the Arab world • The pervasive anti-Zionism/antisemitism on university campuses • The rise of antisemitism in Europe • Why the United States and Israel are linked in the minds of antisemites Clear, persuasive, and thought provoking, Why the Jews? is must reading for anyone who seeks to understand the unique role of the Jews in human history.
