Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of Democracy IT is my purpose in this book to show what real democratic government is. People have studied the outside of the body of democracy; they have hardly begun to know what makes its life, or upon what its good health depends. Democracy is on trial in the world, on a more colossal scale than ever before. Its friends per haps never faced more difficult problems. Neither have they ever had so much reason to hope for success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Spirit: A Basis for World Democracy The past four years have been critical in the life of our country. Repeatedly the question has been asked whether we have such a thing as a national conscious ness. Have the many nationalities represented in our ancestry and in our naturalized citizenship been welded together into one unified whole? Has the melting pot given us a single product, or only a loose amalgamation which is ready to fall apart under special stress and ten sion? Is there one American Spirit, or are there many and divided loyalties? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Browning and Whitman

Download or read book Browning and Whitman written by Oscar L. Triggs and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Browning and Whitman: A Study in Democracy The volume now given to the public is an expansion of a paper read before the London Browning Society at their meeting of May 27th of the present year. The purpose of the paper was to point out the essential democracy of Robert Browning. The intent of the present work is to suggest the need of an exegesis of modern prophetical literature. And the endeavour is therefore made in the case of Browning and Whitman to identify life and literature. The result will be, for a few readers, not incurious. It is found that some poems which prove well in lecture-rooms and parlours prove not at all in the open air, in the streets and workshops, in contact with the varied life of man. The thoughts which prompt the several essays may be stated as follows: God is a living will, who is realised by men and women in their practical activities and creations. To realise the will of God, by whatever institutional means of State or church or school, is the purport of democracy. Democracy cares supremely for the soul; this, before all laws, forms, institutions, policies, economics, is the one thing worthy of conserving. For the purposes of world-profession, art can no longer be separated from life. Art is the union of the real and the ideal, it is matter receiving spirit, it is spirit taking form. Art is a witness of ideality; at the same time it shows the possibility of the realisation of highest thought. This phase of our political problems has not received adequate recognition at the hands of writers on American politics. Very Often indeed it has been entirely ignored, although in the Short period which has elapsed since our Constitution was framed and adopted, the Western world has passed through a political as well as an industrial revolution. Book The Spirit of Democratic Capitalism

Book excerpt: 30 years after the release of his ground-breaking work, The Spirit of Democratic Capitalism, Michael Novak returns to answer the question of what gives rise to democratic capitalism - that intricate blend of commerce and rule of law that encourages peace and global trade. This essay is vital to understanding the intangible environment that best inspires human flourishing, as it discovers capitalism's essence, and uncovers what truly fosters creativity.Novak articulates how democratic capitalism works toward creating, not just consuming, wealth, along with encouraging ambition, discipline, and mutual benefit. He explains how critics fail to consider the interaction between the system and the role that economic, political, and moral liberties play in comprehensive human flourishing. This new and exciting work enlivens the connection between the Bible and democratic capitalism by showcasing how seamlessly the dynamic polity fits with the imperatives of human capacity and drive.

Book The Irresistible Movement of Democracy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Irresistible Movement of Democracy Classic Reprint written by John Simpson Penman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irresistible Movement of Democracy The object of this book is to tell the story of democracy from its first beginnings in the modern world until its culmination in our time. The idea was first suggested to me by trying to under stand what was meant by the famous phrase used during the world war, - to make the world safe for democracy. It sug gested the questions, What was democracy? What were the advantages of a form of government for which the world was striving? If democracy was attained, would it be a gain for humanity? Democracy has always been difficult of definition and much misunderstanding of its true nature has arisen because men have used the term in different senses. Democracy may mean either a spirit of society, a state of society, or a form of government. I have taken democracy in the usual meaning as accepted by Bryce, Lecky and Maine, as a form of popular government. In this general sense it has been used by modern writers, and its modern advent dates from the time when nations and men began to seek a form of government based upon the popular will as expressed in universal suffrage. CHAPTER Vin POLITICAL SOCIALISM f There are two radical and even revolutionary changes between which Democracy has to make its choice, if the spirit of Democracy is ever to dominate American industrial institutions: --the first is Political Socialism; the second is Industrial Democracy. If any of my readers are inclined to think that Political or State Socialism, as in this chapter defined, is no longer maintained in Socialistic circles, I can only say, first, that I hope he is right, but, second, that my observation of the currents of to-day leads me to agree with Edmond Kelly, an advocate of a modified Political Socialism, in his statement, "State Socialism, therefore, is the form probably most in vogue among workingmen."1 And I believe the best way to meet it is to define it clearly, and to distinguish it from what may be called voluntary Socialism, but what I prefer to call "Industrial Democracy." I avoid the term State Socialism because that term is often used to designate the doctrine of Bismarck: " That the State should 1 Twentieth Century Socialism, p. 235. take better care of its needy members than heretofore is not only a dictate of humaneness and Christianity, but also a necessity of conservative politics, which should aim to cultivate in the nonpossessing classes of the population, who are at the same time the more numerous and least instructed, the view that the State is not only a necessary but also a beneficent institution." This is directly opposed to Socialism which aims to abolish the distinction between possessing and non-possessing classes. It is as difficult to define Socialism as it is to define Orthodoxy; whatever definition one offers, there is sure to be a Socialist to declare that the definition is wrong. For...

Book The English Democracy Its Promises and Perils Classic Reprint

Download or read book The English Democracy Its Promises and Perils Classic Reprint written by Arnold White and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Democracy Its Promises and Perils The Church of England, torn with intestine strife, like other owners of property, is the object of ungovern able greed, and the secular spirit of an ideal acknow ledging neither God nor master, is ceasing to hold in reverence a priesthood it no longer dreads. Neither reward nor punishment beyond the grave retains its ancient power to deter men from evil, and to impel them towards good citizenship. A new social morality has accompanied the intro duction of a new political economy. The socialism of Christ, which consisted in sharing with others, is re placed by attempts to legalise spoliation; and moral sanction is claimed for these efforts by spiritual leaders who, having lost control over the masses in the domain of theology, seek to recover influence over them in the dust and passion of party politics. Such are some of the conflicting currents through which English democracy is passing. Racial common sense; the lives and examples of men who still prefer character to notoriety the increasing influence of good women; the infusion of Jewish mind and thrift; and the gradual recovery of reasoned conviction that the main lessons of our English Bible are true, and cannot be ignored with impunity by men or nations, are among the more hopeful elements in the prospect now opening before us. Book The Gospel of Jesus and the Problems of Democracy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gospel of Jesus and the Problems of Democracy Classic Reprint written by Henry C. Vedder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel of Jesus and the Problems of Democracy The man who to-day proclaims the Gospel of Jesus in the spirit of his Master must expect misunderstand ing, abuse and perhaps persecution. Why not? Shall the disciple be above his Master? Still in heaven's name the deeds of hell are done Still on the high-road, 'neath the noonday sun The fires of hate are lit for them who dare Follow their Lord along the untrodden way. I am not suprised or disquieted, therefore, that I am accused of being a dangerous heretic. And it is with no expectation of getting rid of that reputation that I here protest that I have no quarrel with ortho doxy. The kernel of it I believe to be truth, as firmly as the most orthodox. I find nothing false in it, save that kind of falsity which results from a lay ing of the emphasis in the wrong place. The change of emphasis that I urge, from the metaphysics of Paul to the ethics of Jesus, involves such a difference of perspective, such a readjustment of magnitudes and values, as appears like heresy to the more conservative. But after a time they will learn to make the adjust ment, and will perceive that nothing valued by the old orthodoxy has been lost, though its form may have been not a little altered.
