Book The Spirit in the Book of Revelation

Download or read book The Spirit in the Book of Revelation written by Robby Waddell and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-08-26 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation centres on the role of the Spirit in Revelation, which the author considers is best defined as the Spirit of Prophecy. A survey of scholarship on the pneumatology of the Apocalypse is followed by a study of intertextual connections. The author’s own religious context within Pentecostalism then informs a possible hermeneutic that is faithful to the ethos of the movement. Biblical and literary studies are situated within the context of a Pentecostal community as attention is paid to the prophecy concerning the temple and the witnesses in Rev 11. This key passage is shown to form the theological as well as the literary centre of the Spirit’s role in Revelation.

Book Did the First Christians Worship Jesus

Download or read book Did the First Christians Worship Jesus written by James D. G. Dunn and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2010-07-15 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To answer the title question effectively requires more than the citing of a few texts; we must first acknowledge that the way to the answer is more difficult than it appears and recognize that the answer may be less straightforward than many would like. The author raises some fascinating yet vexing questions: What is worship? Is the fact that worship is offered to God (or a god) what defines him (or her) as "G/god?" What does the act of worship actually involve? The conviction that God exalted Jesus to his right hand obviously is central to Christian recognition of the divine status of Jesus. But what did that mean for the first Christians as they sought to reconcile God's status and that of the human Jesus? Perhaps the worship of Jesus was not an alternative to worship of God but another way of worshiping God. The questions are challenging but readers are ably guided by James Dunn, one of the world's top New Testament scholars.

Book excerpt: In the book of Revelation, God unveils the world as it really is, identifying an unseen spiritual war and announcing a very real day of judgment. We need to be convinced that Jesus is reigning as the risen King. We need to have him speak to the situation in our churches. We need to see how God will pulverize wickedness, obliterate those who oppose him, and set up his kingdom. Revelation has exactly what we need. Useful for personal study, as well as for preaching and teaching (Hamilton even includes helpful charts and tables to highlight key themes and literary elements), the thirty-seven sermons in this volume have a clear structure: introduction, body, and conclusion. Hamilton successfully grabs the reader's attention, raises awareness of a real need, and states the main point of the sermon text. In addition to explaining the meaning of each passage, Hamilton connects the main ideas to applicable analogies and actionable points. Revelation is a prophecy of epic proportions and Hamilton invites readers to love God and his people by expositing this revelation of Jesus, and to say along with the apostle John, "Come, Lord Jesus." Part of the Preaching the Word series.

Download or read book Revelations written by Elaine Pagels and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-03-06 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A startling exploration of the history of the most controversial book of the Bible, by the bestselling author of Beyond Belief. Through the bestselling books of Elaine Pagels, thousands of readers have come to know and treasure the suppressed biblical texts known as the Gnostic Gospels. As one of the world's foremost religion scholars, she has been a pioneer in interpreting these books and illuminating their place in the early history of Christianity. Her new book, however, tackles a text that is firmly, dramatically within the New Testament canon: The Book of Revelation, the surreal apocalyptic vision of the end of the world . . . or is it? In this startling and timely book, Pagels returns The Book of Revelation to its historical origin, written as its author John of Patmos took aim at the Roman Empire after what is now known as "the Jewish War," in 66 CE. Militant Jews in Jerusalem, fired with religious fervor, waged an all-out war against Rome's occupation of Judea and their defeat resulted in the desecration of Jerusalem and its Great Temple. Pagels persuasively interprets Revelation as a scathing attack on the decadence of Rome. Soon after, however, a new sect known as "Christians" seized on John's text as a weapon against heresy and infidels of all kinds-Jews, even Christians who dissented from their increasingly rigid doctrines and hierarchies. In a time when global religious violence surges, Revelations explores how often those in power throughout history have sought to force "God's enemies" to submit or be killed. It is sure to appeal to Pagels's committed readers and bring her a whole new audience who want to understand the roots of dissent, violence, and division in the world's religions, and to appreciate the lasting appeal of this extraordinary text.

Book The Role of the Spirit in the Eschatological Ethics of Revelation

Download or read book The Role of the Spirit in the Eschatological Ethics of Revelation written by Pandelani Paul Mbedzi and published by Partridge Africa. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of the spirit in the eschatological ethics of revelation was a topic that has given me great joy to learn the book of Revelation the role of the spirit, eschatological and ethics. In this book, I have discovered the plan of salvation, which was laid before the foundation of the world in a very clear manner. God, the master of the universe, revealed to John the final story of this worlds history at the Isles of Patmos. The trinity is well-explained and even their duties as the Godhead. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost of which my dissertation is looking at the office or the role of the spirit in the second coming of Christ. From Genesis to Malachi, it is God the Father who revealed himself to mankind, and from Matthew to Acts 1:8, it is God the Son who came in person to reveal God the Father, and from Acts 1:9, to Revelation it is God the Holy Spirit who will teach us all that God the son could not finish teaching us. The script is divided into five chapters, which are the orientation into the book of Revelation, the theology and the ethics of the book Revelation, the eschatology ethics in Revelation, the Holy Spirit in Revelation, and the role of the spirit and eschatology ethics of Revelation, which is the theme of this script. Then we have the conclusion of the script.

Book The Spirit and the Bride Say Come

Download or read book The Spirit and the Bride Say Come written by Susan Gutknecht and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-03-02 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb” (Revelation 19:9). What is the end of the age? What is the wedding supper? Are you prepared? Like us, the apostles asked those very questions. In the Bible, the wedding supper refers to what will happen at the end of the age. Jesus answered by telling the apostles the parable of the ten virgins, a reference to those on earth who know about the end of days. He advised the apostles that only half of those who know the end is coming will be prepared; only half of those who know about the end of days will have enough oil to keep their lamps burning through the long night of waiting. The other half will be at the market looking for oil and will miss the coming of Jesus. That would mean half of the people who know that Jesus is coming back are not prepared for his return. We need to gather oil for our lamps throughout our lives through prayer, through reading the Bible. The Holy Spirit was sent to prepare us for the wedding supper. Does God still perform miracles or speak to His people? At the age of four, I clearly heard the voice of the Holy Spirit say to me, “You can have joy in your life if you walk with me.” This is a personal testimony of how the Lord heals the ones He loves, walks with us, and surrounds us with His peace.
