Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spinster "We can yet learn even from the old dwellers in Indian forests; not the lesson of cold indifference, but the lesson of viewing objectively, as being in it, yet not of it, the life which surrounds us in the market-place; the lesson of toleration, of human sympathy, of pity, as it was called in Sanskrit, of love, as we call it in English, though seldom conscious of the unfathomable depth of that sacred word. Though living in the forum, and not in the forest, we may yet learn to agree to differ with our neighbour, to love those who hate us on account of our religious convictions, or, at all events, unlearn to hate and persecute those whose own convictions, whose hopes and fears, nay, even whose moral principles, differ from our own. That, too, is forest life, a life worthy of a true forest sage, of a man who knows what man is, what life is, and who has learnt to keep silence in the presence of the Eternal and the Infinite." - Max Muller. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reveries of a Spinster I was coming home as usual the other evening through the rain, which had turned to sleet, and the sharp wind, which with cruel malevolence, was searching out the thin worn places in my shabby old coat. My shoes were torn, so that the dampness penetrated them, and through a hole in my umbrella a stream of water trickled, and glued my veil to my face. Download or read book Spinster written by Kate Bolick and published by Crown. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Notable Book “Whom to marry, and when will it happen—these two questions define every woman’s existence.” So begins Spinster, a revelatory and slyly erudite look at the pleasures and possibilities of remaining single. Using her own experiences as a starting point, journalist and cultural critic Kate Bolick invites us into her carefully considered, passionately lived life, weaving together the past and present to examine why she—along with over 100 million American women, whose ranks keep growing—remains unmarried. This unprecedented demographic shift, Bolick explains, is the logical outcome of hundreds of years of change that has neither been fully understood, nor appreciated. Spinster introduces a cast of pioneering women from the last century whose genius, tenacity, and flair for drama have emboldened Bolick to fashion her life on her own terms: columnist Neith Boyce, essayist Maeve Brennan, social visionary Charlotte Perkins Gilman, poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, and novelist Edith Wharton. By animating their unconventional ideas and choices, Bolick shows us that contemporary debates about settling down, and having it all, are timeless—the crucible upon which all thoughtful women have tried for centuries to forge a good life. Intellectually substantial and deeply personal, Spinster is both an unreservedly inquisitive memoir and a broader cultural exploration that asks us to acknowledge the opportunities within ourselves to live authentically. Bolick offers us a way back into our own lives—a chance to see those splendid years when we were young and unencumbered, or middle-aged and finally left to our own devices, for what they really are: unbounded and our own to savor.

Book excerpt: The Spinster Book: Large Print by Myrtle Reed Because she herself works indirectly, she thinks he intends a tender look at another girl for a carom shot, and frequently a far-sighted maiden can see the evidences of a consuming passion for herself in a man's devotion to someone else. Men are not sufficiently diplomatic to bother with finesse of this kind. Other things being equal, a man goes to see the girl he wants to see. It does not often occur to her that he may not want to see her, may be interested in someone else, or that he may have forgotten all about her. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spinster Farm The first edition of "Peggy at Spinster Farm" was published under the title selected for the manuscript, "Spinster Farm," but, shortly after the book appeared, the friends, both of the author and of the publishers, pointed out that "Peggy at Spinster Farm" was the more appropriate title, since, after all, it is around Peggy and her love affair that the book centres. Accordingly, but few copies of the first printing had been issued before it was decided to change the title, and the greater portion of the first edition appeared with the present title, "Peggy at Spinster Farm." In the second printing the new title is adhered to, but it is deemed advisable to explain the somewhat unusual action of changing the title of a story after publication. Book The Notebooks of a Spinster Lady

Download or read book The Notebooks of a Spinster Lady written by and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Notebooks of a Spinster Lady: 1878-1903 King Oscar of Sweden and his Queen - The Prince Imperial dodges his Admirers - Monsieur Meurice - Luncheon with Napoleon III and his Empress - A Lesson from the Looking-glass - Queen Victoria and the Empress - The Marchese's Mongrel - Sir William Harcourt relieves his Feelings - Gladstone's Exuberance in Conversation - A Picture by Turner - Hudson the Railway King - An Encounter with a Dean. In a number of small notebooks, labelled "Memorabilia," the Diarist, a spinster lady, wrote down from time to time anecdotes, incidents and conversations that amused or were of interest to her. The entries cover the years 1878 to 1903. They are various in quality, from mere jokes that caught the author's fancy, often more than sufficiently circulated already, and ghost-stories of no particular authority, to discussions of serious import and curious facts and anecdotes about distinguished men that deserve to be remembered. The notebooks contain much light, good-natured gossip, like most gossip not always reliable, but the blame must fall on her informants, and not on the Diarist, if what she has recorded is at times inaccurate. Her memory was retentive; the entries were made when their matter - the incidents or conversation - was fresh in her recollection. She records faithfully what she has heard or seen. While there are passages in the notebooks that I have summarised or abbreviated, I have not tampered with their wording. The style of their author is, like her handwriting, clear, vigorous and picturesque, a style that conveys her impressions freely and naturally to the reader. You know Aunt Jane was never acquainted with any distinguished folk. Would it be interesting, think you?' 'I do not see why it should not be. If she never knew any celebrities personally, she must have seen many people and a vast number of interesting things and places; and just think for a moment of the changes which have taken place during the last fifty years; and change is not the only development. Things were quieter, and people less hurried in the middle of the "wonderful century" - and what a really marvellous century it was! The world was more conventional, more fussy, and prudish; but on the other hand, it had time to think. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. "It's not looks that attract men," there was a note of finality in the voice; "it's something else." The speaker snapped off her words in a tone that marked extreme disapproval. "What else?" enquired the other voice. "Oh, it's - well, it's something not quite nice," replied the other voice darkly, "the French call it being tres femme. However, she hasn't got it." "Well, I feel very sorry for her and her loneliness. I am sure she would be much happier if she had a nice young man of her own class to take her about." Patricia Brent listened with flaming cheek? If a tin-type is good evidence, I most surely did, I was given the name of Mary without my knowledge or consent, but at home I was never nick-named Polly. I had other names in plenty, but that I never heard. I reckon it had been tried on me before I could answer to it, and met with a just reward. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Engagement: A Spinster's Story The sneaking heroism of young Edwards, and the stubborn ignorance of the pretty Miss Willis, all satires on modern manners and edu cation, are by the way admirably introduced, giving variety and scope to the picture. And while the wily widow allures, the Colonel hesi tates, the parson yields, Miss Vaughan distrusts, and Mrs. Grove frets, we laugh at the piquant thrusts of the jolly Doctor Grove, and acknow ledge the strong good sense of Miss Brooke, who so vividly tells the story.
