Book Child Life and the Curriculum Classic Reprint

Download or read book Child Life and the Curriculum Classic Reprint written by Junius Lathrop Meriam and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Child Life and the Curriculum Bobby was one of my foremost pupils in a village high school. He was fourteen years old but small in stature. At times his face was radiant with boyish joy; at other times his face bore the serious demeanor of a judge. Bobby was one of the very first to reach the playground at recess time. After recess he was among the first to open his books for study. He played with those younger than himself because the younger ones played the more. In the classroom he worked with those older than himself because with these his good mind had more companionship. He was punctual, regular, and reliable in both work and play. But before the close of the year a marked change took place in Bobby. He played less and studied less. Something was wrong with the boy - or with the school. As his teacher, I had come directly from a classical college. I required all my students to take Latin and mathematics. English grammar and history also were emphasized. Hard work and vigorous drill characterized my school policy. I wondered what caused the change in Bobby. One day three of my grade teachers reported to me that Fred, known in the school and in the town as "the worst boy in school," had been asked by Bobby to join his gang. He declined, saying that that gang was too bad for him. My Bobby's gang too bad for Fred? Thus through Fred it was discovered that Bobby was the leader of a gang which had as one of its purposes: How to make swearing easy. These boys held regular and irregular meetings in a little covered bridge near the pastor's house. There they exercised in their self-chosen art. Explanation of the changed attitude of my favorite student was now clear. The usual play at recess had not provided the needed activity. Book The Junior High School Idea Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Junior High School Idea Classic Reprint written by Joseph K. Van Denburg and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Junior High School Idea Speyer School therefore has been developed and is developing as an experimental school where, under Professor Briggs' direction, the principal and teachers have been wholly free to work out such administrative methods and such courses of study as seemed best fitted to secure the results desired. The six hundred pupils have been public school boys (and for a time girls also) selected from some twenty neighboring elementary schools because of their promise of school success. On the whole, the pupils have been above the average New York City boys of their age in general intelligence. The twenty teachers too are above the average, having been selected for initiative, knowledge of subject matter, a willingness to try eagerly and honestly such innovations as have been proposed, and above all, for that professional spirit that leads them to consider first most carefully the reasons why a thing should be done at all, and then being satisfied on that point to do that thing as well as in them lies. The general aim of Speyer School as stated by Professor Briggs and accepted by the faculty and pupils of the school has been: First: "To teach pupils to do better those desirable activities that they will do anyway and to teach these by means of material in itself worth while." Second, "To reveal higher types of activities and to make these both desired and, to an extent, possible." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Child and the Curriculum There is another study in which I am engaged, which is still more tedious and perplexing - to make myself master of all the rules of a hundred different kinds of verses, and of all the musical modulations of words and syllables. After deploring the lack of able teachers, he continues It would far exceed the bounds of a familiar letter to explain this matter fully, to lay open all the secrets of that art of metre, concerning letters, syllables, poetic feet and figures, verses, tones, time, &0. Add to this the doctrine of the seven divisions of poetry with all their variations, and what number of feet every different kind of verse must consist of. Book The Curriculum Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Curriculum Classic Reprint written by Franklin Bobbitt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Curriculum Since the opening of the twentieth century, the evolution of our social order has been proceeding with great and ever-accelerating rapidity. Simple conditions have been growing complex. Small institutions have been growing large. Increased specialization has been multiplying human interdependencies and the consequent need of coordinating effort. Democracy is increasing within the Nation; and growing throughout the world. All classes are aspiring to a full human opportunity. Never before have civilization and humanization advanced so swiftly. As the world presses eagerly forward toward the accomplishment of new things, education also must advance no less swiftly. It must provide the intelligence and the aspirations necessary for the advance; and for stability and consistency in holding the gains. Education must take a pace set, not by itself, but by social progress. The present program of public education was mainly formulated during the simpler conditions of the nineteenth century. In details it has been improved. In fundamentals it is not greatly different. A program never designed for the present day has been inherited. Any inherited system, good for its time, when held to after its day, hampers social progress. It is not enough that the system, fundamentally unchanged in plan and purpose, be improved in details. In education this has been done in conspicuous degree. Our schools to-day are better than ever before. Teachers are better trained. Supervision is more adequate. Buildings and equipment are enormously improved. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Curriculum of the Horace Mann Elementary School Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Curriculum of the Horace Mann Elementary School Classic Reprint written by Teachers of the Horace Mann Elem School and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Curriculum of the Horace Mann Elementary School The curriculum of the Horace Mann Elementary School, as published in five numbers of the teachers college record in 1906 and 1907, has long since been out of date as well as out of print. In response to many requests, therefore, this revision of the course of study is published. The changes from the former curriculum, while they are numer ous, have been the result of a gradual growth during the past six years. The administration of the school leaves the principal and the teachers peculiarly free to modify their methods of teaching and the subject matter of instruction whenever it seems best to do so in View of the best interests of the pupils and in accordance with the best accepted educational practice. The specific changes that have been made are noted in the introductory statements under each subject. The Study of New York City, which is outlined in Chapter IV, is an organized attempt to prepare our pupils to take a more intelligent and enthusiastic interest in civic betterment. As they become better acquainted with local history and tradition and with our best artistic possessions, as they come to realize the great social problems growing out of the industrial life of their city and the organizations of good citizens that are working to solve such problems, we hope that they themselves will soon develop a high type of civic responsibility.
