Book The Spell Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Spell Classic Reprint written by William Dana Orcutt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spell "Now, Jack, here is a chance to put your knowledge of the classics to some practical use." Helen Armstrong paused for a moment before a Latin inscription cut in the upper stones of the boundary wall, and leaned gratefully upon her companion's arm after the steep ascent. "What does it mean?" Her husband smiled. "That is an easy test. The ancient legend conveys the cheering intelligence that 'from this spot Florence and Fiesole, mother and daughter, are equi-distant.'" The girl released her hold upon the man's arm and, pushing back a few stray locks which the wind had loosened, turned to regard the panorama behind her. It was a charmingly picturesque and characteristic Italian roadway which they had chosen for their day's excursion. On either side stood plastered stone walls, which bore curious marks and circles, made - who shall say when or by whom? - remaining there as an atavistic suggestion of Etruscan symbolism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shifting Spell James, the eldest brother, evaded any prolonged mortification of mind (and lightened the present nar rative) by dying within less than five months of Douglas' entry into Whitridge Grange. Although his death lightens the present narrative, the reader will be sorry to learn that James had contrived to complicate matters by leaving a very young step daughter - Janet Ranford (age, five years) - as sole heiress of his estate, which latter consisted of noth ing save some miserable house property, of less value than £50 a year. Fortunately, however, Douglas' eldest sister, Miss Augusta Stranghurst, had a mania for undertaking special duties; the good dame therefore at once took Charge of the helpless orphan child, and it is to be hoped that the reader will con done James' conduct in having brought this kind hearted lady into prominence because she is about to play a conspicuous part in the history of Whitridge Grange. Book A History of England in the VII Vol 7 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of England in the VII Vol 7 Classic Reprint written by William Edward Hartpole Lecky and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of England in the VII, Vol. 7 Dropmore, and to Lord George Hamilton for some curious papers describing the different interests and connections in the Irish Parliament. It will be objected, that the addition of two long volumes to the large amount of Irish history already contained in this book has completely destroyed the proportion of my work. It must, however, be remembered, that the present volumes form in reality a supplementary history, dealing with Irish affairs during eight eventful years which are not comprised in my English narrative. The sketch of Irish history which has been given in the preceding volumes would be imperfect and, per haps, even misleading, if it were not continued to the close of the Irish Parliament and to the resignation of Pitt, in March 1801. But if the fiercely contested events Of those last years are related at all, it is very desirable that they should be related in a manner that may, if possible, raise them above the distort ing atmosphere of party strife, and place the reader in a position to judge them in all their aspects. There is a method of dealing with historical facts which has been happily compared to that of a child with his box of letters, who picks out and arranges those letters, and those only, which will spell the words on which he has previously determined, leaving all others un touched. In Irish history this method has been abundantly practised, and among the many crimes and errors that have been committed by all parties, it is not difficult to select on either side the materials Of a very effective party narrative. I have endeavoured to write this History in a different spirit. Perhaps another generation may be more capable than the present one, of judging how far I have succeeded. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spook Stories All right, the idle scamp will come, said I. I knew my father didn't want me to be in London, either. Mark you, the idle scamp has to be pleasant, said Hugh. Well, you'll come anyhow; that's ripping. You'll see what my father means by not wanting to do anything. That's Garth. The end of the next week saw us installed there, and never in all the first sights of the various splendours of the world that have since then been accorded to me, have I felt so magical and potent a spell as that which caught the breath in my throat when on the evening of that hot August day I first saw Garth. For a mile before the road had lain through the woods that clothe the slope above it; from there my cab emerged as from a tunnel, and there in the clear twilight, with sunset flaming overhead, was the long grey facade, with the green lawns about it, and its air of antique and native tranquillity. It seemed an incarnation of the very soul and spirit of England there on the south was the line of sea, and all round it the immemorial woods. Like its oaks, like the velvet of its lawns, the house had grown from the very soil, and the life of the soil still richly nurtured it. Venice was not more authentically born from the sea, nor Egypt from the mystery of the Nile, than Garth was born from the woods of England. There was time for a stroll round before dinner, and Hugh casually recounted the history of it. His forebears had owned it since the time of Queen Anne.
