Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spell of China I like to read books of travel, an old lady remarked to me, as she held a copy of The Spell of the Holy Land in her hand. I can read them and imagine that I am visiting the countries written about. But there is one fault that I have to find with all of them; they tell you about the trip from New York to Jerusalem, Zanzibar or Patagonia, but they never tell how much the trip costs. Why, I was thirty years old before I knew that it was possible to spend the summer in Europe without a small for tune. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Wayfarer in China: Impressions of a Trip Across West China and Mongolia Word of explanation may help to an under A standing of this record of a brief journey in China, in 1911, in the last quiet months before the revolution. No one who has ever known the joy of hunting impressions of strange peoples and strange lands in the out-oi - the-way corners of the world can ever feel quite free again, for he hears always a compel ling voice that calls him night and day to go forth on the chase once more. Years ago, for a beginning, I pursued impressions and experiences in the Far West on the frontier, there was a frontier then. And since that time, whenever chance has offered, that has been my holiday pastime, among the Ken tucky mountains, in the Taurus, in Montenegro, in India. Everywhere there is interest, for everywhere there is human nature, but whoever has once come under the spell of the Orient knows that henceforth there is no choice; footloose, he must always turn eastwards. Book The Spell of the Holy Land Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Spell of the Holy Land Classic Reprint written by Archie Bell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spell of the Holy Land There are two kinds of pilgrims to the Holy Land. Some journey to Palestine from religious motives, while others go because by nature they are wanderers over the face of the earth. It seems only fair to my readers to declare at the outset that I belong to the second class. I wanted to see Palestine because I had been assured that I would find there many things that were new, although this seemed to be something of a paradox, for many scientists and archaeologists believe that the northern part of Syria and Palestine possessed a civilization far more ancient than that of Egypt, and that in Baalbek's marble ruins are fragments dating back to the earliest prophets of the Hebrew Bible. Indeed, there is a tradition that the "altar of the Lord," built by the son of Adam and Eve, was the beginning of that holy city. My informants told me that in Baalbek, that hoary city of Baal, I would find a kaleidoscope of colour and novelty which alone would cause enthusiastic impressions of Egyptian Thebes to fade from my mind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chinese Folk-Lore Tradition holds that Tung Fung continued to live for hundreds of years, healing the sick and relieving the wants of mankind, until, having been refined and purified by endless good deeds, he was at last deemed fit to enter the Western Heaven, where, on a larger and more extended scale, he could devote his energies to the assistance of men through out the wide world. Another distinguished man who lived during the Han dynasty (bc. 206 to ad. 23) was also a man who had an intimate knowledge of diseases. His name was Tsu Tan and his image is also set up in the druggists' shops, and his treatise on medicine and his prescriptions for all manner of diseases are sedulously studied and carried out by the doctors of the present day. So famed was this man that his books were printed in japan, and for many centuries the doctors there were guided by them; and it is only latterly, since the introduction of Western medical science, that these have begun to fall into disuse. The past could not chain her, the present could not bind her. A Bible school for women rose in her future, and after it became a fact, and others were doing most of the routine work, she passed on to work into a reality dreams of a school for women of the higher classes, with lecture courses, mothers' clubs, and training for social service, a work which for many years to come cannot reach the proportions of her vision. There could be no more fitting memorial for Miss Russell than buildings which would help to make her dreams come true. If Mark Hopkins, one student, and a log made a college, Miss Russell, a Chinese woman, and a tiny Chinese room made a Social Settlement. They are real only in as far as they are essential parts of a picture painted to portray facts - that is, the impact of East upon West, the disarray which collisions bring, and the ensuing irony. This book is, therefore, a synthesis - not a theorem or a caricature. It is too serious to be either of the latter. It should be read only by people with a sense of humour. From Lu Xun’s Call to Arms (1923) to Gao Xinjiang’s Nobel Prize–winning Soul Mountain (1990), this remarkable anthology features writers both known and unknown in its celebration of the versatility of writing. Book I Love Dollars and Other Stories of China

Download or read book I Love Dollars and Other Stories of China written by Wen Zhu and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In five richly imaginative novellas and a short story, Zhu Wen depicts the violence, chaos, and dark comedy of China in the post-Mao era. A frank reflection of the seamier side of his nation's increasingly capitalist society, Zhu Wen's fiction offers an audaciously plainspoken account of the often hedonistic individualism that is feverishly taking root. Set against the mundane landscapes of contemporary China-a worn Yangtze River vessel, cheap diners, a failing factory, a for-profit hospital operating by dated socialist norms-Zhu Wen's stories zoom in on the often tragicomic minutiae of everyday life in this fast-changing country. With subjects ranging from provincial mafiosi to nightmarish families and oppressed factory workers, his claustrophobic narratives depict a spiritually bankrupt society, periodically rocked by spasms of uncontrolled violence. For example, I Love Dollars, a story about casual sex in a provincial city whose caustic portrayal of numb disillusionment and cynicism, caused an immediate sensation in the Chinese literary establishment when it was first published. The novella's loose, colloquial voice and sharp focus on the indignity and iniquity of a society trapped between communism and capitalism showcase Zhu Wen's exceptional ability to make literary sense of the bizarre, ideologically confused amalgam that is contemporary China. Julia Lovell's fluent translation deftly reproduces Zhu Wen's wry sense of humor and powerful command of detail and atmosphere. The first book-length publication of Zhu Wen's fiction in English, I Love Dollars and Other Stories of China offers readers access to a trailblazing author and marks a major contribution to Chinese literature in English.

  • Author : Douglas R. Reynolds
  • Publisher : BRILL

Download or read book China 1898 1912 written by Douglas R. Reynolds and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging most accounts of China's revolutionary transformation at the turn of the century, Douglas Reynolds argues that the political toppling of the Qing dynasty in 1911 was less important than the Xinzheng or "New System" reforms of the late-Qing government itself. He then provides a detailed account of the debt those reforms owed to Japan. For the Chinese, Japan offered models for major modern institutions; training for administrators, military officers and modern police; a shortcut to Western knowledge through translations from the Japanese; a ready-made modern vocabulary using Kanji or Chinese characters; and advisers and instructors in many fields. After establishing the broad areas in which China underwent a lasting and peaceful revolution during a "Golden Decade" of beneficial relations with its island neighbour, Reynolds recounts the activities of Chinese students in Japan and those of Japanese teachers and advisers in China. He examines the effect of translations from the Japanese on textbooks and general publishing; and outlines Chinese borrowings from Japanese Western-style institutions in education, the military, police and prisons, modern law, the judiciary, and constitutional government.
