Book The Speedicut Papers Book 1 1821 1848

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Speedicut Papers recounts in very frank detail the life, loves, and adventures of Jasper Speedicutcharmer, sexual libertine, reluctant hero, and friend of the self-styled brigadier general Sir Harry Flashman, VC. Comprising a nine-volume series of linked adventures and anecdotes in memoir format, The Speedicut Papers lifts the lid from a veritable cesspit of Victorian and Edwardian upper-class debauchery that makes Downton Abbey look like a vicarage tea party. It is also a unique account of Speedicuts involvement in some of the greatestand also some long-forgottenevents in the British Empire and beyond during the period of 18211915. In Flashmans Secret, the first volume of the saga, Speedicut throws a searchlight onto some very murky corners of the nineteenth century, including the early careers of the notorious courtesan, Lola Montez, and the demon barber of Fleet Street, Sweeney Todd. New insights are also provided into the formation of the IRA, the first Anglo-Afghan War, and the dubious acquisition by the British crown of the Koh-i-Noor diamond. If this were not enough, Flashmans Secret also reveals Nelsons actual last words and the existence of a sinister and murderous secret society at the heart of the British establishment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book 8 of The Speedicut Papers is primarily concerned with Speedicuts involvement with the young Winston Churchill on the North-West Frontier of India, in the Sudan at the Battle of Omdurman and in the Second Boer War, during which Speedicut is captured along with Churchill. When not acting as nursemaid to Britains future greatest Prime Minister, Speedicut plays a central role, invariably with disastrous consequences, in the notorious Jameson Raid, Queen Victorias Diamond Jubilee and the assassination of the Empress of Austria. Speedicuts opinions on the great figures of our time give a whole new meaning to the word iconoclast Dr Samuel Johnson If all the men and women Speedicut slept with were laid end to end, I wouldnt be at all surprised. Dorothy Parker In defeat, defiance; in victory, magnanimity; in peace, goodwill except where that shit, Speedicut, is concerned. Winston S Churchill

How and why did King Ludwig II of Bavaria, Crown Prince Rudolph of Austro-Hungary and Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence & Avondale, actually die? Who was Jack the Ripper? And why was Oscar Wilde provoked into suing Lord Queensberry? For the first time convincing answers to these and many other historical questions are answered in the letters of Colonel Jasper Speedicut to his friend Harry Flashman. Speaking on behalf of the Faversham family, I can assure you that this book is an appalling travesty of the truth! Book Muslim Merit making in Thailand s Far South

Download or read book Muslim Merit making in Thailand s Far South written by Christopher M. Joll and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-02 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an ethnographic description of Muslim merit-making rhetoric, rituals and rationales in Thailand’s Malay far-south. This study is situated in Cabetigo, one of Pattani’s oldest and most important Malay communities that has been subjected to a range of Thai and Islamic influences over the last hundred years. The volume describes religious rhetoric related to merit-making being conducted in both Thai and Malay, that the spiritual currency of merit is generated through the performance of locally occurring Malay adat, and globally normative amal 'ibadat. Concerning the rationale for merit-making, merit-makers are motivated by both a desire to ensure their own comfort in the grave and personal vindication at judgment, as well as to transfer merit for those already in the grave, who are known to the merit-maker. While the rhetoric elements of Muslim merit-making reveal Thai influence, its ritual elements confirm the local impact of reformist activism.

Book Harry Flashman and the Invasion of Iraq

Download or read book Harry Flashman and the Invasion of Iraq written by H C Tayler and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-02-22 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the winter of 2002/3, as Britain and the United States prepare for war with Iraq, one man above all others is doing his utmost to avoid conflict. Step forward Captain Harry Flashman, a staff officer with the Queen's Royal Hussars and distant descendant of legendary Victorian scoundrel General Sir Harry Flashman, VC. The passing generations have done nothing to fortify his moral fibre. Flashman's journey begins with a posting to Plymouth, home of the Royal Marines, in time to join the impending Gulf deployment. Despite his protestations he is shipped to Kuwait to begin a relatively secure job with Brigade Headquarters. But his plans for a cosy war spent safely behind a desk are rudely interrupted by an enforced move to a front-line unit. After bust-ups with the Americans and a foiled attempt to avoid the invasion altogether, Flashman finds himself in the one place he has tried so hard to avoid: the very vanguard of the assault. Landing by helicopter with the Royal Marines, he is soon footslogging through the mud and fighting for his life as the men of 42 Commando seize their objectives on the Al Faw Peninsula. Based on the experiences of the author, Harry Flashman and the Invasion of Iraq is a historically accurate account of events in the Gulf during spring 2003 – embellished only slightly for the enjoyment of the reader.

Book excerpt: This book fills in two gaps in Flashman's career, hitherto uncovered by his memoirs. The bulk of this volume is taken up with Flashman's adventures in what was then Prussia, but which now comprises Poland, Russia and the Baltic states. In 1806 Prussia declared war on France and in a disastrous campaign lost most of its territory. Russia was forced to come to its aid and Britain too sent observers to assess how to help. Flashman joins this mission in what should have been a safe diplomatic visit - but of course was anything but. From bloody, frozen retreats to battles in blizzards, he is soon in the thick of the action as a country fights for its very survival. Diplomatic intrigues follow and, with the aid of a Russian countess, our hero uncovers the enemy's plans - and works to frustrate them. Also included is the short story Flashman's Christmas, set in Paris a few months after the battle of Waterloo. As royalists conduct vindictive purges on former Bonapartists, Flashman is embroiled in a notorious eve of execution jail-break as he is reunited with old friends to outwit old enemies.

Book excerpt: While many people have heard of the battle at Rorke's Drift, (featured in the film Zulu) and the one at Isandlwana that preceded it, few outside of South Africa know of an earlier and equally bloody conflict. Under a tyrannical king, the Zulu nation defended its territory with ruthless efficiency against white settlers. Only a naïve English vicar, with his family and some translators are permitted to live in the king's capital. It is into this cleric's household that Thomas Flashman finds himself, as a most reluctant guest. Listening to sermons of peace and tolerance against a background of executions and slaughter, Thomas is soon fleeing for his life, barely a spearpoint ahead of regiments of fearsome warriors. He is to learn that there is a fate even worse than his own death before being pitched in with Boers and British settlers as they fight a cunning and relentless foe. Thomas strives for his own salvation, before discovering that chance has not finished with him yet.
