Book excerpt: More than just another guide to making a quick dollar on the stock market or beating the S&P 500, The Speculator's Mosaic is a speculative investment book that details the hard-earned wisdom accumulated during five decades of portfolio management. Culled from a lifetime of successes - and failures - the book offers a detailed suite of tricks and strategies that have given author Bob Leppo an edge in stock market investing, commodity futures, and the wild world of venture capital. Yes, the book is about making money - lots of it. But The Speculator's Mosaic is about more than that. It's about the journey. It's about the excitement, frustration, rapture, and disappointment of pure speculation. It's about booms and busts, fortunate breaks and missed opportunities. Inspirational in tone, it's a love song to speculation, replete with triumph, heartbreak, anguish, and redemption. Part memoir, part tale of discovery and rebirth, The Speculator's Mosaic is mostly a friendly, no-nonsense guide to navigating the ups and downs - financial, emotional, and otherwise - of a career in speculative investment. Detailing a half century of hits and misses, often with brutal honesty, the book relays lessons learned from both the crucible of failure and the elation of success. There are plenty of books on stock picking, on shorting commodity futures, on investment basics, on obtaining venture capital money. What makes The Speculator's Mosaic different is that beyond stocks and commodities, it gives the reader a real-world perspective on what it's like on the VC's side of the table, picking the products and people worth betting heavily on. In the book, author Robert Leppo walks the reader through real life failures and successes in portfolio management, outlining investing basics as well as strategies and tools for investing in people who create valuable products or services. This includes specific tips to help readers position themselves as a positive counterpoint to the negative image of today's mainstream VC. With 50 years of speculative investment experience, even novice speculators stand a good chance to strike it rich - and learn a thing or two about themselves in the process. Robert Leppo started as a kid flush with $100 dollars of poker winnings. He finished with a fortune. The Speculator's Mosaic tells the story of how.

  • Author : Liz James
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2017-10-05
  • ISBN : 1108508596
  • Pages : 1748 pages

Download or read book Mosaics in the Medieval World written by Liz James and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 1748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Liz James offers a comprehensive history of wall mosaics produced in the European and Islamic middle ages. Taking into account a wide range of issues, including style and iconography, technique and material, and function and patronage, she examines mosaics within their historical context. She asks why the mosaic was such a popular medium and considers how mosaics work as historical 'documents' that tell us about attitudes and beliefs in the medieval world. The book is divided into two part. Part I explores the technical aspects of mosaics, including glass production, labour and materials, and costs. In Part II, James provides a chronological history of mosaics, charting the low and high points of mosaic art up until its abrupt end in the late middle ages. Written in a clear and engaging style, her book will serve as an essential resource for scholars and students of medieval mosaics.

Book The Cosmatesque Mosaics of Westminster Abbey

Download or read book The Cosmatesque Mosaics of Westminster Abbey written by Warwick Rodwell and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2019-11-30 with total page 1379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Westminster Abbey contains the only surviving medieval Cosmatesque mosaics outside Italy. They comprise: the ‘Great Pavement’ in the sanctuary; the pavement around the shrine of Edward the Confessor; the saint’s tomb and shrine; Henry III’s tomb; the tomb of a royal child, and some other pieces. Surprisingly, the mosaics have never before received detailed recording and analysis, either individually or as an assemblage. The proposed publication, in two volumes, will present a holistic study of this outstanding group of monuments in their historical architectural and archaeological context. The shrine of St Edward is a remarkable survival, having been dismantled at the Dissolution and re-erected (incorrectly) in 1557 under Queen Mary. Large areas of missing mosaic were replaced with plaster on to which mosaic designs were carefully painted. This 16th-century fictive mosaic is unique in Britain. Conservation of the sanctuary pavement was accompanied by full archaeological recording with every piece of mosaic decoration drawn and colored by David Neal, phase plans have been prepared, and stone-by-stone examination undertaken, petrologically identifying and recording the locations of all the materials present. It has revealed that both the pavements and tombs include a range of exotic stone types. The Cosmati study has shed fresh light on every aspect of the unique series of monuments in Westminster Abbey; this work will fill a major lacuna in our knowledge of 13th-century English art of the first rank, and will command international interest.

Book The Cambridge Handbook of Language Contact

Download or read book The Cambridge Handbook of Language Contact written by Salikoko Mufwene and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 947 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language contact - the linguistic and social outcomes of two or more languages coming into contact with each other - has been pervasive in human history. However, where histories of language contact are comparable, experiences of migrant populations have been only similar, not identical. Given this, how does language contact work? With contributions from an international team of scholars, this Handbook - the first in a two-volume set - delves into this question from multiple perspectives and provides state-of-the-art research on population movement and language contact and change. It begins with an overview of how language contact as a research area has evolved since the late 19th century. The chapters then cover various processes and theoretical issues associated with population movement and language contact worldwide. It is essential reading for anybody interested in the dynamics of social interactions in diverse contact settings and how the changing ecologies influence the linguistic outcomes.

Book Mosaics of the Greek and Roman World

Download or read book Mosaics of the Greek and Roman World written by Katherine M. D. Dunbabin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive account of mosaics in the ancient world from the early pebble mosaics of Greece to the pavements of Christian churches in the East. Separate chapters in Part I cover the principal regions of the Roman Empire in turn, in order to bring out the distinctive characteristics of their mosaic workshops. Questions of technique and production, of the role of mosaics in architecture, and of their social functions and implications are treated in Part II. The book discusses both well-known works and recent finds, and balances consideration of exceptional masterpieces against standard workshop production. Two main lines of approach are followed throughout: first, the role of mosaics as a significant art form, which over an unbroken span illuminates the evolution of pictorial style better than any comparable surviving medium; and secondly, their character as works of artisan production closely linked to their architectural context.

Book Geminivirus Detection Diagnosis and Management

Download or read book Geminivirus Detection Diagnosis and Management written by R.K. Gaur and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2022-05-28 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geminivirus: Detection, Diagnosis and Management focuses on the latest techniques for managing diseases caused by these circular, single-stranded (ss) DNA genomes. The most significant impact of plant diseases in host populations is often caused by emerging diseases, whose incidence in a plant host is increasing as a result of long-term changes in their underlying epidemiology. Genetic changes in pathogen and host populations, as well as changes in host ecology and environment, are major factors contributing to disease emergence. Understanding plant virus evolution is crucial for modeling the within-host and between-host dynamics and genetics of virus populations. The book presents a comprehensive review of how these viruses develop, including contributing factors such as population bottlenecks during cell-to-cell movement, systemic colonization, or between-host transmission by different procedures. Presented in five sections—Detection and Diagnosis, Emergence and Diversity, Vector and Transmission, Virus–Host Interaction, and Disease Management, the book includes host range determinant and virulence factors involved in pathogenesis, virus–vector interactions during acquisition, retention, and transmission and evaluating management strategies to control Geminivirus. The book is an essential reference for students and researchers interested in plant virology, particularly begomoviruses, geminiviruses, and vector transmission biology. Introduces identification and characterization of geminiviruses that infect agricultural crops, their wild relatives, and weed hosts Discusses recombination and reassortment mechanisms influencing viral genetic diversity, virulence, and vector transmission Explores the origin, evolution, and bottlenecks of Geminiviruses Introduces identification and characterization of geminiviruses that infect agricultural crops, their wild relatives, and weed hosts Discusses recombination and reassortment mechanisms influencing viral genetic diversity, virulence, and vector transmission Explores the origin, evolution, and bottlenecks of Geminiviruses
