Book excerpt: We use the light-front quark model to investigate the structure of the scalar mesons, mainly focusing on the three heavy isoscalar states f0(1370), f0(1500), and f0(1710). We comput the spectrum of scalar mesons by diagonalizing a relativized, QCD-inspired model Hamiltonian written in a basis of 25 simple harmonic oscillator states. The masses are then used to perform a mixing analysis which assumes that the heavy isoscalars are mixtures of quarkonia and the scalar glueball. The resulting quark-glue content is used along with the meson wave functions determined from the spectrum to compute the decay rates to pairs of pseudoscalar mesons (two pions, two kaons, two eta mesons). We find that when the glueball contributions to the decays are ignored, the results are in poor agreement with the available data. However, when we estimate the effect of including the glueball contributions in the decays, a solution can be found that matches the data quite well. In this solution, the f0(1710) is mostly glueball (78%) while the f0(1500) and f0(1370) are mostly mixtures of quarkonia. Additionally, in this solution the glueball contributions to kaon and eta final states are significant, while the contributions to the pion final state is negligible. This finding is in agreement with Chanowitz who uses chiral perturbation theory to show that the amplitude for a scalar glueball to decay to a quark-antiquark pair is proportional to the quark mass. This results in a suppression of the pion decay channel compared to the kaon and eta decay channels.

Book Meson Spectroscopy in the Framework of Constituent Quark Models

Download or read book Meson Spectroscopy in the Framework of Constituent Quark Models written by Antony Prakash Monteiro and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complexity of quantum chromodynamics in the non-perturbative domain forces physicist to resort to models in order to describe the phenomena of intermediate energy physics and hence this book develops three different quark models to study light and some heavy mesons: a non relativistic quark model with one-gluon-exchange potential(OGEP) and Instanton-Induced Interaction (III); a semi-relativistic quark model with OGEP and III where the confinement of the quark is modeled with the relativistic harmonic model; a relativistic model where the features of the two previous models are supplemented with the introduction of gluon confinement and thus confined one-gluon-exchange potential (COGEP). Both tensor and spin-orbit parts of the interactions are taken into account in all the three models. It begins with an introduction to the quark model of hadrons covering the SU(3) symmetry in chapter 1 and it discusses in detail the constituent quark models in chapter 2. The three models and a description on decays are developed in chapters 3 and 4. The results and conclusions are presented in chapters 5 and 6. This book predicts mass spectra and certain decays of light and some heavy mesons.

Book Light Cone Quark Model Analysis of Pseudoscalar and Vector Mesons for Radially Excited States

Download or read book Light Cone Quark Model Analysis of Pseudoscalar and Vector Mesons for Radially Excited States written by and published by . This book was released on 1905 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a relativistic constituent quark model to analyze the mass spectrum and hadronic properties of radially excited u and d quark sector mesons. Using a simple Gaussian function as a trial wave function for the variational principle together with a QCD motivated Hamiltonian, including not only the Coulomb and confining potential but also a relativistic corrected hyperfine interaction term, we obtain the mass spectrum consistent with the experimental data. To do the same for several observables such as decay constants and form factors it seems necessary to include bothDirac and Pauli form factors on the level of constituent quarks. Taking into account these quark form factors we thus present the generalized formulas for the rho meson decay constant and the rho meson form factors as well asthe $\pi\gamma$ transition form factor. We alsopredict several hadronic properties for the radially excited states.

Book Study of Scalar Mesons and Related Radiative Decays

Download or read book Study of Scalar Mesons and Related Radiative Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a brief review of the puzzling light scalar meson sector of QCD, a brief summary will be given of a paper concerning radiative decays involving the light scalars. There, a simple vector meson dominance model is constructed in an initial attempt to relate a large number of the radiative decays involving a putative scalar nonet to each other. As an application it is illustrated why a[sub 0](980)-f[sub 0](980) mixing is not expected to greatly alter the f[sub 0]/a[sub 0] production ratio for radiative[phi] decays.

Book Spectroscopy of Light and Heavy Quarks

Download or read book Spectroscopy of Light and Heavy Quarks written by Ugo Gastaldi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second course of the International School on Physics with Low Energy Antiprotons was held in Erice, Sicily at the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture, from May 20 to May 31, 1987. The School is dedicated to physics accessible to experiments using low energy antiprotons, especially in view of operation of the LEAR facility at CERN with the upgraded antiproton source AAC (Antiproton Accumulator AA and Antiproton Collector ACOL). The first course in 1986 covered topics related to fundamental symmetries. This book contains the proceedings of the second course which focused on spectroscopy of light and heavy quarks. These proceedings contain both the tutorial lectures and contri butions presented by participants during the School. The papers are organized in four sections: The first section includes theoretical reviews. Section II contains experimental reviews and covers the results in meson spectroscopy from DM2, MARK III, GAMS and n-WA76. Section III presents the new meson spectroscopy experiments in pre paration at CERN and Fermilab: Crystal Barrel, OBELIX, Jetset and E760. Section IV is dedicated to LEAR and to future facilities where meson spectroscopy would be a principal component of the physics programme. We should like to thank Dr. Alberto Gabriele and the staff of the Ettore Majorana Centre who provided for a smooth running of the School and a very pleasant stay. We are particularly grateful to Mrs. Anne Marie Bugge for her crucial help during the preparation and running of the School and for the editing of these Proceedings.

Book The Quark Structure of Hadrons

Download or read book The Quark Structure of Hadrons written by Claude Amsler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novel forms of matter, such as states made of gluons (glueballs), multiquark mesons or baryons and hybrid mesons are predicted by low energy QCD, for which several candidates have recently been identified. Searching for such exotic states of matter and studying their production and decay properties in detail has become a flourishing field at the experimental facilities now available or being built - e.g. BESIII in Beijing, BELLE II at SuperKEKB, GlueX at Jefferson Lab, PANDA at FAIR, J-PARC and in the upgraded LHC experiments, in particular LHCb. A modern primer in the field is required so as to both revive and update the teaching of a new generation of researchers in the field of QCD. These lectures on hadron spectroscopy are intended for Master and PhD students and have been originally developed for a course delivered at the Stefan Meyer Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. They are phenomenologically oriented and intended as complementary material for basic courses in particle and nuclear physics. The book describes the spectra of light and heavy mesons and baryons, and introduces the fundamental properties based on symmetries. Further, it derives multiplet structures, mixing angle, decay coupling constants, magnetic moments of baryons, and predictions for multiquark states and compares these with suitable experimental data. Basic methods of calculating decay angular distributions and determining masses and widths of resonances are also presented. The appendices provide students and newcomers to the field with the necessary background information, and include a set of problems and solutions.

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the investigation of the strongly interacting hadrons ? to a quark model operating with effective color particles, constituent quarks, massive effective gluons and diquarks. The study of strong interactions based on effective constituent particles requires a solid ground of experimental data, which we now have at our disposal with the serious progress made in the investigation of hadrons, especially meson states. The present understanding of QCD applied to strong interactions can be distorted by prejudices. Therefore, the way followed by the quark model is to rely on the experiment and to restore the effective Hamiltonian on the basis of QCD on the one hand, and, on the other, of the spectral integral method.Baryon-baryon and antibaryon-baryon interactions are studied with the purpose of unambiguous applications of the written formulae to the interpretation of experimental data ? to the observation of new meson and baryon resonances. The technique used is the spin-orbital momentum expansion of the amplitude. This method is our basic approach to the proper treatment of experimental data. The photon-induced reactions are also considered and the problem of form factors is discussed.

Book Quark Model and High Energy Collisions

Download or read book Quark Model and High Energy Collisions written by Vladimir Vladislavovich Anisovich and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an updated version of the book published in 1985. QCD-motivated, it gives a detailed description of hadron structure and soft interactions in the additive quark model, where hadrons are regarded as composite systems of dressed quarks. In the past decade it has become clear that nonperturbative QCD, responsible for soft hadronic processes, may differ rather drastically from perturbative QCD. The understanding of nonperturbative QCD requires a detailed investigation of the experiments and the theoretical approaches. Bearing this in mind, the book has been rewritten paying special attention to the interplay of soft hadronic collisions and the quark model. It is at the crossroads of these domains that peculiar features of strong QCD reveal themselves. The book discusses constituent quarks, diquarks, the massive effective gluons and the problem of scalar isoscalar mesons. The quark-gluonium classification of meson states is also given. Experimentally observed properties of hadrons are presented together with the corresponding theoretical interpretation in the framework of the composite hadron structure. The text includes a large theoretical part, which shows how to treat composite systems (including relativistic ones) with a technique based on spectral integration. This technique provides the possibility of handling hadrons as weakly bound systems of quarks and, at the same time, takes into account confinement. Attention is focused on the composite structure revealing itself in high energy hadron collisions. Fields of applicability of the additive quark model are discussed, as is colour screening in hadronic collisions at high and superhigh energies. Along with a detailed presentation of hadronOCohadron collisions, a description of hadronOConucleus collisions is given. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Introduction (1,047 KB). Contents: High Energy Hadron Interactions; Composite Systems; High Energy Interactions of Composite Systems; Hadron Zoology and Static Features of Hadrons; Binary Processes in the Quark Model; Multiparticle Production in the Quark Model: Hadron Collisions at Moderately High Energies; HadronOCoNucleus Collisions. Readership: Graduate students and researchers in particle and nuclear physics."
