This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 930 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Special Law Governing Public Service Corporations and All Others Engaged in Public Employment, Vol. 1 The spirit of our present age demands that the great business enterprises shall be conducted in accordance with the requirements of society. The present programme of organized society is to see to it that those Who have gained a substantial control of their market shall not be left free to exploit those who look to them to supply their needs. Men now see clearly that freedom of action may, even in the industrial world, work injuriously for the public, and it must then be restrained in the public interest. We have seen the results of unrestrained power; and we no longer wish those who have control over our destinies left free to do with us as they please. Liberty does not mean to men at the beginning of the twentieth century what it meant to men at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Book Algorithms for the People

Download or read book Algorithms for the People written by Josh Simons and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to put democracy at the heart of AI governance Artificial intelligence and machine learning are reshaping our world. Police forces use them to decide where to send police officers, judges to decide whom to release on bail, welfare agencies to decide which children are at risk of abuse, and Facebook and Google to rank content and distribute ads. In these spheres, and many others, powerful prediction tools are changing how decisions are made, narrowing opportunities for the exercise of judgment, empathy, and creativity. In Algorithms for the People, Josh Simons flips the narrative about how we govern these technologies. Instead of examining the impact of technology on democracy, he explores how to put democracy at the heart of AI governance. Drawing on his experience as a research fellow at Harvard University, a visiting research scientist on Facebook’s Responsible AI team, and a policy advisor to the UK’s Labour Party, Simons gets under the hood of predictive technologies, offering an accessible account of how they work, why they matter, and how to regulate the institutions that build and use them. He argues that prediction is political: human choices about how to design and use predictive tools shape their effects. Approaching predictive technologies through the lens of political theory casts new light on how democracies should govern political choices made outside the sphere of representative politics. Showing the connection between technology regulation and democratic reform, Simons argues that we must go beyond conventional theorizing of AI ethics to wrestle with fundamental moral and political questions about how the governance of technology can support the flourishing of democracy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wesley Hohfeld is known the world over as the legal theorist who famously developed a taxonomy of legal concepts. His contributions to legal thinking have stood the test of time, remaining relevant nearly a century after they were first published. Yet, little systematic attention has been devoted to exploring the full significance of his work. Beginning with a lucid, annotated version of Hohfeld's most important article, this volume is the first to offer a comprehensive look at the scope, significance, reach, intricacies, and shortcomings of Hohfeld's work. Featuring insights from leading legal thinkers, the book also contains many of Hohfeld's previously unseen personal papers, shedding new light on the complex motivations behind Hohfeld's projects. Together, these selected papers and original essays reveal a portrait of a multifaceted and ambitious intellectual who did not live long enough to see the impact of his ideas on the study of law.
