Book The Speaking in Tongues Controversy

Download or read book The Speaking in Tongues Controversy written by Rick Walston and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2005-09-27 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What others are saying... As an AG minister, I was especially interested in Dr. Walston's discussion of this topic. I found his arguments lucid, biblical, exegetical, and convincing. Rev. Kevin Potts, Ph.D. Candidate, Chaplain Dr. Walston has thrown a 'big wrench' into my tongues-as-evidence doctrinal gears. I am now working through what I thought was a foundational doctrine that I also thought was settled long ago. This book should be required reading for people on both sides of this issue. Dr. Denny Nissley, AG minister, Director of Christ in Action Ministries Many books and articles have been written in defense of speaking in tongues as the unmistakable, physical evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. Through his careful and thorough analysis of the Pentecostal texts in the Book of Acts, Dr. Walston is challenging this view. This book is beyond doubt one of the most thought-provoking analyses on this theme I have ever read. Nils-Olov Nilsson, Th.D., Swedish Missionary and Theologian with the Swedish Pentecostal Movement

Book The Psychology of Speaking in Tongues

Download or read book The Psychology of Speaking in Tongues written by John P. Kildahl and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the dimly lit fireside room of the First Presbyterian Church, a small circle of members quietly listened to their pastor say, 'The Lord is in your presence....Empty yourselves of all other thoughts...let all your anxieties flow out of you....Open your mouth, and he will give you utterance.'" Witnessed by the author, this and many other examples of speaking in tongues form the basis of his examination of the phenomenon of glossolalia. A spoken but unintelligible form of prayer described in the New Testament, speaking in tongues was confined to a dew isolated sects until recently. Now it has found a way into mainline Protestant and Roman Catholic churches, bringing spiritual exuberance to an increasing number while offending others. Spurred by the controversy surrounding tongue-speaking, Dr. Kildahl, a psychotherapist, conducted interviews with tongue-speakers in depth over a period of ten years. Sponsored originally by the American Lutheran Church and later by the National Institute of Mental Health, he traveled coast to coast listening to tongue-speakers describe their practice, recording their utterances, and observing their groups. From the most intensive firsthand study of the subject ever undertaken, he has written this account of the psychology of speaking in tongues. Hearing tongue-speakers report their enhanced feelings of well-being, Dr. Kildahl investigated the relationship of the practice to mental health. Here he describes the crucial role of the tongue-speaking leader in the lives of those who adopt the practice from him, as well as the relationship of speaking in tongues to anxiety and spiritual crisis. He tells what he found about the interpretation of tongues and about the connections between tongue-speaking and hypnosis. In this book Dr. Kildahl also surveys the historical background of speaking in tongues, beginning with biblical references and continuing to the current generation. Perspective is added through summaries of what other contemporary writers have said about the practice. For observers of the religious scene, as well as for those familiar with tongue-speaking, Dr. Kildahl has written this sensitive and scientific account of an increasingly frequent religious experience."-Publisher.

Book Agnes Sanford and Her Companions

Download or read book Agnes Sanford and Her Companions written by William L. De Arteaga and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-08-17 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agnes Sanford was arguably the most original and spiritually fruitful theologians of the twentieth century. Among her achievements were the discovery and development of the inner healing ministry, the development of a theology of the light of God (missing in Western theology), and the first ever theology of "nature prayers"--as in stilling storms. She and her husband developed a school to teach ministers and lay leaders healing and deliverance prayer, and the gifts of the Spirit a decade before the charismatic renewal made such things acceptable in mainline churches. In spite of these achievements, she is largely ignored and unrecognized today. This work examines her career and shows why her theology, though deeply biblical, was unacceptable to "orthodox" critics. Sanford was part of a group who worked from the 1900s through the 1960s to make healing and deliverance prayer as normal in church. They had to confront the erroneous established theology of cessationism, which affirmed that the healing ministry of the church was past.

As a charismatic biblical scholar and theologian, Dr. Brown responds to Pastor MacArthur's charges, making a biblical case for the continuation of the New Testament gifts of the Spirit and demonstrating the unique contribution to missions, theology, and worship made by the charismatic Church worldwide. He calls for an appreciation of the unique strengths and weaknesses of both cessationists and charismatics, inviting readers to experience God afresh, and he demonstrates how charismatic leaders have been addressing abuses within their own movement for decades. Dr. Brown speaks on behalf of millions who are not adequately trained to express in writing their own encounters with the supernatural power of God. - David Ravenhill I thank God for this biblically-robust, pastorally-sensitive, historicallyinformed, and graciously-articulated account of the work of the Holy Spirit in the church of Jesus Christ. - Sam Storms Dr. Michael Brown's Authentic Fire puts the brakes on John MacArthur's crusade against charismatics with irrefutable logic, extraordinary insight, Christ-like graciousness, and an undisputable handling of Scripture. - Frank Viola Michael Brown writes with clarity and courtesy as he confronts one of the most explosive issues among all those who uphold the Bible as the plumb line of truth. - David Shibley

Book Theological Dialogue with Classical Pentecostals

Download or read book Theological Dialogue with Classical Pentecostals written by Jelle Creemers and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-24 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last two decades have witnessed the growing participation in theological dialogues of non-institutional (free church) movements. This poses a serious challenge to 21st century ecumenism, since ecclesial realities and internal diversity of these movements impede fruitful dialogue in the classical manner. The present volume addresses fundamental aspects of this challenge by a critical study of an exemplary case of such dialogues, the International Roman Catholic-Classical Pentecostal Dialogue (1972-2007). This unique study builds both on primary archival sources and on earlier research on the IRCCPD. After providing an ecumenical profile of the Classical Pentecostal dialogue partner, Creemers demonstrates how fair representation of the Classical Pentecostal movement has been pursued in the course of the dialogue. Next, he gives attention to the ecumenical method of the IRCCPD. First, the development of a dialogue method hinging on “hard questions” is traced, which has allowed a balanced theological exchange between the dialogue partners. Regarding theological method, it is demonstrated that both partners showed a willingness to experiment together by integrating sources of theological knowledge typically distrusted in their own traditions. In conclusion, the analyses are integrated in an overview of challenges and opportunities for dialogue with the Classical Pentecostal movement in the context of ongoing discussions on ecumenical method.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost 40 years ago John and Elizabeth Sherill introduced the world to the phenomenon of 'speaking in tongues' in their book, They Speak with Other Tongues. The book was an immediate success as thousands were touched by the power of this spiritual gift. The Hidden Power of Speaking in Tongues again explores this spiritual experience powerfully prevalent in the early church. This much maligned and controversial gift was a practical part of their worship and intercession and seeks to be rediscovered in our day. In a day of spiritual poverty, Chavda challenges the Body of Christ to experience afresh the secret dynamic of 'speaking in tongues', as he removes the veil covering this glorious gift.
