Book Lectures on the German Mineral Waters and on Their Rational Employment

Download or read book Lectures on the German Mineral Waters and on Their Rational Employment written by Sigismund Sutro and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the German Mineral Waters and on Their Rational Employment: With an Appendix, Embracing a Short Account of the Principal European Spas and Climatic Health-Resorts Since the publication of the first edition (now out of print for nearly a year), the facilities of travelling have progressed to such a wonderful degree, that distance almost ceases to be taken into consideration in the selection of a health re sort. It therefore behoves our profession, not only to be acquainted with Spas that were formerly easy of access, but also with all available natural means of curing or prevent ing disease. Wishing to give a concise account of many other Spas visited and explored since, I thought it best to leave the Lectures in their original form, so favourably received by the profession, and to add an appendix, which might serve as a short but comprehensive manual of all the important health resorts, not treated of in the previous edition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Baths of Rhenish Germany: With Notices of the Adjacent Towns So many more persons wish for an account of the Baths near home than are directly interested in those of the interior of Germany, and in the general remarks contained in my larger work, that instead of producing a fresh edition, I have deemed it more advisable for the present - in accordance with the opinion of the foreign booksellers - to publish this small volume for the accommodation of visitors to the Rhine, as well as of those of the profession, who may desire information respect ing the most valuable of the mineral springs of this district. Book The German Spa in the Long Eighteenth Century

Download or read book The German Spa in the Long Eighteenth Century written by Ute Lotz-Heumann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2023-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shifting the focus from the medical use of spas to their cultural and social functions, this study shows that eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century German spas served a vital role as spaces where new ways of perceiving the natural environment and conceptualizing society were disseminated. Although spas continued to be places of health and healing, their function and perception in central Europe changed fundamentally around the middle of the eighteenth century. This transformation of the role of the spa occurred in two ways. First, the spa popularized a new perception of the landscape with a preference for mountains and the seacoast, forming the basis for the cultural assumptions underlying modern tourism. Second, contemporaries perceived spas as meeting places comparable to institutions of Enlightenment sociability like coffeehouses, salons, and Masonic lodges. Spas were conceived as spaces where the nobility and the bourgeoisie could interact on an equal footing, thereby overcoming the constraints of early modern social boundaries. These changes were negotiated through both personal interactions at spas and an increasingly sophisticated published spa discourse. The late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century German spa thus helped to bring about social and cultural modernity.
