Book The Spanish Treasure a Story Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Spanish Treasure a Story Classic Reprint written by Mrs. Elizabeth C. Winter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spanish Treasure a Story Any casual passer would have described these two as a fashionable young woman and a poor girl. The first paused as she reached the corner of Thirty-fourth street; the other girl also paused, a few feet distant. The street was crowded, as it usually is at that time of day, and several surface cars were passing rapidly in various directions. The snow of two days past made a deep, slushy mire, as slippery and dangerous to walk through as it was unpleasant to see. The young lady, who was not accustomed to walking, and had no sense of the danger of that particular crossing, suddenly tossed her little head and, with a slight laugh, plunged forward into the' chaos of moving vehicles and horses. The movement was so unexpected that a policeman, who had been coming to her assistance, stood still and gave utterance to a few vehement remarks explosive exclamations, apparently from every point of the com pass, were blown about through the air; all sorts of vehicles backed hurriedly and their wheels became interlocked. Several horses performed impromptu circus-feats of standing on their hind-legs, and all the drivers swore loudly, heartily and with much apparent relish. Out of this wild commotion the young lady presently emerged on the other side of the street, her arm closely held in the firm grasp of the poor girl, and both young women were now equally pale. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spanish Galleon: Being an Account of a Search for Sunken Treasure in the Caribbean Sea As I lay with my face turned toward the sea, listening in despair to the soft, monotonous lip-lipping of the waves, varied at regular intervals by the long, foaming crash of the swell as it broke and swept up the sands, there came presently in the eastern sky a faint silvery glow, and the full moon stole up from out the glistening water until it shone full and broad, making a burnished path down to the shore at my feet. N o doubt, this saved my life. In an hour it was almost as light as day. I untied my shoes, which I had fastened to the chest while swimming, put them on to guard my feet, and started in search of drinking-water. Fortunately it was close at hand. A little brook flowed down to the sea not more than forty rods to the north of my landing-place. Had I been in condition to remember anything, I should have known this fact, because while floating in the sea I noted this stream by the low foliage that marked its course near the beach, and longed for a draught of the water which I knew must be there. Stumbling along the sands, I reached the stream, and lying down, buried my face in the clear, sweet water, and drank until I could drink no more. This was possibly an imprudent thing to do. Indeed it was followed by dreadful nausea. But this did not hinder me from taking another draught, almost as deep as the first. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish Gold Another man, while dwelling with pleasure on the expectation of a drink, would have also wished for a wash and the use of a clothes brush. The ideal curate, the dilettante, delicate-handed priest of Tennyson's poems, the beloved of ladies in English country towns, would have wished first to be clean and then desired some mild refreshment - tea, perhaps, served in an old china cup. But Mr. Meldon was no such curate. Indeed, those who knew him well wondered at his being a curate at all. He was more at his ease in a smoking-room than a drawing-room, and preferred a gun to a Sunday-school roll-book. He cared very little about his personal appearance, and considered that he paid sufficient respect to the virtue of cleanliness if he washed every morning. He was physically strong, played most games well, had been distinguished as an athlete in college, smoked black tobacco, and was engaged to be married. Also, though no one ever gave him credit for being studious, he read a great many books. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Twentieth-century sleuthing methods are linked with the romance and mystery of the past in this true story of a treasure hunt that has yielded millions. Over 250 years ago a Spanish treasure armada was wrecked on the Florida reefs, and ten richly laden vessels were sunk. In time they were forgotten. In the l 940's Kip Wagner, then a Florida construction man, picked up the first clues to the location of the wrecked ships. They were scarce: occasional blackened silver coins discovered here and there along the beach. But Kip Wagner's imagination was fired, and with the help of his friend and physician, Dr. Kelso, he began the long research and search operations that are described in this engrossing book. They were joined by a small group of other men and formed the Real Eight Corporationappropriately named for the Spanish ocho reales, or piece of eight. Most of the team had other jobs, some of them at nearby Cape Kennedy, and could hunt treasure only in their spare time. But they persisted. The work was arduous, at times dangerous. There were setbacks, disappointments, grueling underwater ordeals. But in time the rewards were sensational -thousands of silver pieces of eight and golden doubloons, silver bars and bullion, gold ingots, gold rings and pendants, priceless Chinese porcelain, a gold necklace appraised by a museum at $50,000, three million dollars in treasure recovered so far by this band of hard-working, adventurous, persistent men.

He saw service at the age of fifteen, and served under Sir John Norris in the Baltic and the North Sea. In 1724 he was in command of a frigate protecting commerce off the coast of North America; here and in the West Indies and Africa he served in the same capacity against the French for several years. In 1740 he commanded a squadron in the Pacific, and inflicted great loss on the Spaniards: at this time comes his famous voyage round the world, which ended in 1744, when he returned home with rich prizes. As Vice-Admiral of the Channel Fleet, he defeated the French off Cape Finisterre in 1747, when he was created Baron Anson. He was First Lord of the Admiralty for two periods of five years each, and died in 1762 as Admiral of the Fleet. This volume contains one of the best episodes of his voyage round the world, the long pursuit of the Spanish treasure ship ending in its capture. Book The Aztec Treasure House

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aztec Treasure-House: A Romance of Contemporaneous Antiquity "God sends nuts to them who have no teeth: " which ancient Spanish proverb of contrariety comes strongly to my mind as I set myself to this writing. By nature am I a studious, book-loving man, having a strong liking for quiet and orderliness. Yet in me also is a strain that urges me, even along ways which are both rough and dangerous, to get beyond book-knowledge, and to examine for myself the abstractions of thought and the concretions of men and things out of the consideration whereof books are made. And I hold that it is because I have thus sought for truth in its original sources, instead of resting content with what passes for truth, being detached fragments of fact which other men have found and have cut and polished to suit themselves, that I have gathered to myself more of it, and in its rude yet perfect native crystals, than has come into the possession of any other modern investigator. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Days of Drake There is the awful feud 'twixt England, the modern spirit making toward progress and civilization, and Spain, the well-nigh worn-out retrogressive force that would dam the river of human thought. There is the spectacle of the Armada, baffled and beaten, and of the English war-ships un der men like Drake and Frobisher, drop ping like avenging angels upon some Spanish port and working havoc on the Spanish treasure galleons. There, too, are the figures of men like Grenville and Raleigh, born adventurers, leaders of men, who knew how to die as bravely and fear lessly as they had lived. And beyond all the glory and adventure there looms in the background of the picture the black cruel ties of Spain, practiced in the dark corners of the earth, against which the English spirit of that day never ceased from pro testing with speech and sword. It was well for the world that in that fierce con test England triumphed. Had Spain suc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
