Book New Mexico Mission Churches

Download or read book New Mexico Mission Churches written by Donna Blake Birchell and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Spanish rule, the land now known as New Mexico was inhabited by many indigenous tribes and pueblos with their own religious beliefs. When conquistadors arrived to search for the Seven Cities of Gold, they created settlements in the pueblos they conquered and forced Catholicism on the people they enslaved. While several of these original missions were destroyed during the Revolt of 1680, the surviving churches are cherished by the communities they now serve. Author Donna Blake Birchell guides you through the unique histories of more than twenty mission churches, their struggles and triumphs over the centuries and the preservation challenges they now face.

Book The Missions of Northern Sonora

Download or read book The Missions of Northern Sonora written by Buford Pickens and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1993-05 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish missions founded by Padre Eusebio Kino in Sonora, Mexico, during the 1690s and early 1700s are historical as well as architectural marvels. Once self-supporting villages with central churches, the missions stand today as monuments to perseverance in the face of a hostile New World. These "Kino Missions" were surveyed in 1935 by the National Park Service to prepare for the restoration of the mission at Tumacacori, Arizona, then a National Historic Monument. That report, which was never published, provided insights into the missions' history and architecture that remain of lasting relevance. Perhaps more important, it documented these structures in photographs and drawings—the latter including floor plans and sketches of architectural detail—that today are of historic as well as aesthetic interest. This volume reproduces that 1935 report in its entirety, focusing on sixteen missions and including two maps, 52 drawings, and 76 photographs. With a new introduction and appendixes that place the original study in context, The Missions of Northern Sonora is an invaluable reference for scholars and mission visitors alike.

Book Spanish Missions of Texas

Download or read book Spanish Missions of Texas written by Byron Browne and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "After the conquest of Mexico by Hernan Cortaes in the sixteenth century, conquistadors and explorers poured into the territory of Nueva Espaana. The Franciscans followed in their wake but carved a different path through a harsh and often violent landscape. That heritage can still be found across Texas, behind weathered stone ruins and in the pews of ornate, immaculately maintained naves. From early structures in El Paso to later woodland sanctuaries in East Texas, these missions anchored communities and, in many cases, still serve them today. Author Byron Browne reconnoiters these iconic landmarks and their lasting legacy."

Book Franciscan Spirituality and Mission in New Spain 1524 1599

Download or read book Franciscan Spirituality and Mission in New Spain 1524 1599 written by Steven E. Turley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franciscans in sixteenth-century New Spain were deeply ambivalent about their mission work. Fray Juan de Zumárraga, the first archbishop of Mexico, begged the king to find someone else to do his job so that he could go home. Fray Juan de Ribas, one of the original twelve 'apostles of Mexico' and a founding pillar of the church in New Spain, later fled with eleven other friars into the wilderness to escape the demands of building that church. Fray Jerónimo de Mendieta, having returned from an important preaching tour in New Spain, wrote to his superior that he did not want to enlist again, and that the only way he would return to the mission field was if God dragged him by the hair. This discontent was widespread, grew stronger with time, and carried important consequences for the friars' interactions with indigenous peoples, their Catholic co-laborers, and colonial society at large. This book examines that discontent and seeks to explain why the exhilaration of joining such a 'glorious' enterprise so often gave way to grinding discontent. The core argument is that, despite St. Francis's own longing to do mission work, his followers in New Spain found that effective evangelization in a frontier context was fundamentally incompatible with their core spirituality. Bringing together two streams of historiography that have rarely overlapped - spirituality and missions - this book marks a strong contribution to the history of spirituality in both Latin America and Europe, as well as to the growing fields of transatlantic and world history.

Download or read book Spanish Mission Churches of New Mexico Classic Reprint written by Le Baron Bradford Prince and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-21 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish Mission Churches of New Mexico Books almost without number have been written on the Mission Churches of California; they have been pictured hundreds of times in pamphlets and magazines, and there seems to be an unfailing inter est in their quaint architecture and the story of their establishment; but outside of the boundaries of New Mexico, practically nothing is known of the far more interesting structures that render the Sunshine State the paradise of the tourist, the antiquarian, and the religious enthusiast. The elements which unite to make the Missions of New Mexico of much more real interest than those of California, will be treated of in the body of this work, and require only this brief reference here. Both in antiquity and variety, the former have a very great advantage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
