Book The Spanish Inquisition Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Spanish Inquisition Classic Reprint written by Joseph De Maitre and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spanish Inquisition The name of the Count Joseph De Maitre, is a name, which was long well known, and is still honoured, in the circles of Statesmen; and in the schools of Diplomacy. In both of these, he long acted a conspicuous part. During a considerable number of years, he held, in his own country, the highest offices of State, - was successively, Minister of Justice, Chancellor, &c., - conciliating, by the wisdom, and prudence, of his conduct, the universal esteem, and approbation, of the nation. Subsequently, he was appointed, and sent, Ambassador to the Court of St. Petersburg, where he continued to reside, during the long term of fourteen years, - admired for his great talents; and beloved for his amiable virtues. He died, in 1822. The present accomplished Duchess of Laval is his daughter. In the walks of Literature, the Count is alike distinguished, as he was in the schools of Politics. His works are various, and numerous. And if, indeed, the display of talents, eloquence, and learning; - if originality, and refinement, of sentiment; if close reasoning, and sound philosophy, are the characteristics of interesting, and useful, works, - it may confidently be asserted, that there are few authors, whose writings better deserve these praises than those of the Count De Maitre. His works are, for the most part, political. But, they are, all of them, devoted to the cause of humanity; and to the interests of religion. Book Records of the Spanish Inquisition

Download or read book Records of the Spanish Inquisition written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Spanish Inquisition: Translated From the Original Manuscripts The manner in which the originals of the following work came into the hands of the translator may be described in a few words. These papers are a part of the Records of the Inquisition of Barcelona, and were obtained during the revolution which broke out at Cadiz in 1819. The province of Catalonia, of which Barcelona is the capital, was one of the most forward and zealous to embrace the cause of freedom. Its inhabitants have, in all times, been distinguished for their daring and determined spirit, and their ardent love of liberty. The revolution moved with rapid strides from the Isle of Leon to the Ebro. On the twentyeighth of February, 1820, the governor of Tarragona received a summons to repair immediately to Madrid, and in a few days the insurrection burst out in the former place. On the fourteenth of March, two days after this, it exploded at Barcelona. The first movement of the revolutionary party was to depose the Captain General of the province. This office was then held by Castanas, a royalist. His predecessor was General Villacampa, an officer of some distinction, who had been deprived of the captain-generalship, and banished to Mataro, a small town on the coast, for his attachment to liberal principles. Castanas was forced to resign, and Villacampa was conducted in triumph from his place of banishment to Barcelona, and reinstated in his dignity by the populace. The government of the city being revolutionized, their next thoughts were directed to the Inquisition, the great engine of priestly oppression, and the object of dread and detestation to the friends of liberty, both political and religious. Download or read book Letters on the Spanish Inquisition written by Joseph de Maistre and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on the Spanish Inquisition: A Rare Work, and the Best Which Has Ever Appeared on the Subject That a temporal punishment awaits the penitent even a er the remis sion of the eternal penalty, strange as it may appear to Protestants, is satisfactorily proved by Scripture. We read in the book OF numbers, that the Lord, after he had pardoned the Israelites for their ungrateful and iniquitous murmuring, had debarred them from the Promised Land, on account of that sin. We find that, after the royal David had repented of his adulterous intercourse, and was assured by the prophet Nathan, on the part of God, that the sin was forgiven, a temporal punishment, (the death of the illicit o 'spring, ) as predicted by the man of God, had actually followed. So much for the temporal punishment. That this can be mod erated, or forgiven, is proved by St. Paul's conduct towards the incestuous Corinthian, whose body had been delivered over to Satan, but who, after his penitential tears, and true amendment of life, had been freed by that great apostle, in the person of Christ. From that awful calamity. In a word, from the days of the apostles down to the present period, the Cath olic Church, by virtue of the power which Christ gave her, has granted the relaxation of this temporal punishment, or this indulgence, whenever the spiritual good of the penitent required it, and when there existed a well-grounded apprehension that a rigorous penance would prove preju dicial to him. Hence what the apostle says to the Corinthians in rela tion to that sorrowmg sinner, the Church observes to her pastors, in all penitential cases, You should rather pardon and comfort him, lest per haps such a one be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow. Book Torquemada and the Spanish Inquisition

Download or read book Torquemada and the Spanish Inquisition written by Rafael Sabatini and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Torquemada and the Spanish Inquisition: A History The history of Prey Tomas de Torquemada is the history of the establishment of the Modern Inquisition. It is not so much the history of a man as of an abstract genius presiding over a gigantic and cruel engine of its own perfecting. Of this engine we may examine for ourselves to-day the details of the complex machinery. Through the records that survive we may observe its cold, smooth action, and trace in this the awful intelligence of its architect. But of that architect himself we are permitted to catch no more than an occasional and fleeting glimpse. It is only in the rarest and briefest moments that he stands clearly before us, revealed as a man of flesh and blood. We see him, now fervidly urging a reluctant queen to do her duty by her God and unsheathe the sword of persecution, now harshly threatening his sovereigns with the wrath of Heaven when they are in danger of relenting in the wielding of that same sword. But in the main he must be studied, not in his actions, but in his enactments - the emanations of his relentless spirit. In these he is to be seen devoutly com passing evil in the perfervid quest of good. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Martyrs of the Spanish Inquisition Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Martyrs of the Spanish Inquisition Classic Reprint written by Frans Christiaan Gunst and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Martyrs of the Spanish Inquisition In offering the translation of this book to the American public, I believe I am doing them a great service, not because the subject is unknown to them, but I doubt whether a book has been published in the United States which gives in so small a compass, such an ample description of the inquisition, so that the great mass of Catholics and Protestants who are ignorant of the enormity of crimes committed during its sway, may become acquainted with them, and showing how it is that the priesthood accumulated the wealth they are feasting on as yet, and how they have acquired the monasteries and lands, whose value is too large to be estimated. After reading it, they will come to the same conclusion of the writer in questioning whether the creed of such a priesthood deserves to be called Christian. The inquisition of that time does not exist now, but another has followed her up; its motto is, "The end justifies the means." The embracing the Roman Catholic faith by the young Lord Bute of England affords a very good proof of their labor. Their next care will be to see him affianced to a young lady who is under their influence as well; the domestics, physician, etc., will all be recommended by them, so that they will be posted up, even with the aid of the confessional, on everything going on in the household. A notary will always be ready for any emergency; for, having hold of the body as well as the spirit, his fortune must be theirs as well, to save his soul from eternal damnation, while they will take care of the dust, to support their holy(!) institution. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Inquisition of Spain, Vol. 1 of 4 IN the following pages I have sought to trace, from the original sources as far as Mble, the character and career of an institu tion which exercised no small influence on the fate of Spain and even, one may say, indirectly on the civilised world. The material for this is preserved so superabundantly in the immense Spanish archives that no one writer can pretend to exhaust the subject. There can be no finality in a history resting on so vast a mass of inedited documents and I do not flatter myself that I have accomplished such a result, but I am not without h0pe that what I have drawn from them and from the labors of previous scholars has enabled me to present a fairly accurate survey of one of the most remarkable organizations recorded in human annals. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jews of Spain and Portugal and the Inquisition The struggles of the Mohammedans and the Christians for supremacy had for centuries excited the minds of the Spaniards, and imbued them with a crusading spirit which would tolerate no dissidence in matters of religion; and this feeling was easily worked upon by the clergy, in regard to a numerous and thriving community, which remained utterly without the pale of the Christian Church. Measures of restriction were followed by efforts at conversion on a scale of unprecedented magni tude, till such efforts grew into a persecution, and, still failing to attain the desired end, culminated in the edict of banishment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish Prisons: The Inquisition at Home and Abroad Prisons Past and Present A considerable portion of this volume is de voted to the Spanish Inquisition, which was, for three centuries, the most important force in Spain. Thousands were condemned by its tribunals, and its prisons and punishments make up a large part of the penal history of that country. Much exaggeration has crept into the popular accounts, but the simple truth must cause a shudder, when read to-day. He concludes with disturbing reflections on the impact of state security organizations in our own time.

Book The Inquisition in the Spanish Dependencies

Download or read book The Inquisition in the Spanish Dependencies written by Henry Charles Lea and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inquisition in the Spanish Dependencies: Sicily Naples Sardinia Milan the Canaries Mexico Peru New Granada The scope of my History of the Spanish Inquisition precluded a detailed investigation into the careers of individual tribunals. Such an investigation, however, is not without interest, especially with respect to the outlying ones, which were subjected to varying influences and reacted in varying ways on the peoples among whom they were established. Moreover, in some cases, this affords us an inside view of inquisitorial life, of the characters of those to whom were confided the awful irresponsible powers of the Holy Office and of the abuse of those powers by officials whom distance removed from the immediate supervision of the central authority, suggesting a capacity for evil even greater than that manifested in the Peninsula. This is especially the case with the tribunals of the American Colonies, of which, thanks to the unwearied researches of Don Jose Toribio Medina, of Santiago de Chile, a fairly complete and minute account can be given, based on the confidential correspondence of the local officials with the Supreme Council and the reports of the visitadores or inspectors, who were occasionally sent in the vain expectation of reducing them to order. While thus in the colonial tribunals we see the Inquisition at its worst, as a portion of the governmental system, we can realize how potent was its influence in contributing to the failure of Spanish colonial policy, by preventing orderly and settled administration and by exciting disaffection which the Council of Indies more than once warned the crown would lead to the loss of its transatlantic empire. It is perhaps not too much to say that these revelations moreover go far to explain the influences which so long retarded the political and industrial development of the emancipated colonies, for it was an evil inheritance weighing heavily on successive generations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mediæval Heresy the Inquisition This book inevitably suffered a prolonged inter ruption owing to the War. That there was not a complete cessation at once I owe to my Father, who most ungrudgingly devoted valuable time to making transcriptions from needed authorities in the British Museum, 'at a time when other duties debarred me from access to books. My friend and former colleague, Mr. W. Garmon Jones, Dean of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Liverpool, gave me the benefit of his ripe scholarship and fine judgment in reading through the greater part of the work in manuscript, though I need hardly say that any errors in statement or opinion are to be attributed to me alone. I have to thank the Rev. T. Shankland of this College for generously undertaking the thankless task of reading the proofs, and my Wife for the compilation of the Index and for other help besides.
