Book excerpt: Combining military, political, cultural, social, and oral history, Sebastian Balfour narrates for the first time the development of a brutalised, interventionist army that played a crucial role in the victory of the Francoists in the Spanish Civil War. Spain's new colonial venture in Morocco in the early twentieth-century turned into a bloody war against the tribes resisting the Spanish invasion of their lands. After suffering a succession of heavy military disasters against some of the most accomplished guerrillas in the world, the Spanish army turned to chemical warfare and dropped massive quantities of mustard gas on civilians. Dr Balfour exposes this previously closely guarded secret using evidence from Spanish military archives and from survivors in Morocco. He also narrates the daily life of soldiers in the war as well as the self-images and tensions among the colonial officers. After looking at the motives that drove Moroccans to resist or cooperate with Spain, the author describes the contradictory pictures among Spaniards of Moroccan collaborators and foes. Finally, he examines the Spanish colonial army's response to the Second Republic of 1931-1936 and its brutal march through Spain in the Civil War. QUOTES FROM PAUL PRESTON'S READERS REPORT: 'This is a book of very considerable significance, the work of a first rate historian working at his peak...This is the most complete and wide-ranging account to date of the Spanish involvement in Morocco and of the consequences of that involvement inside Spain itself...written with a compelling blend of elegance and immediacy...this is a major work, one of which any historian would be proud.'

ODONNELL AND THE ENVOYS. 281 Headquarters Camp, West Of Tetuan, March 26. I Have been writing by scraps and amid many interruptions, and since the above was penned headquarters have again changed their camp to the old place outside the Puerta de la Eeyna, the eastern gate of Tetuan. I resume my narrative of recent events. At two P.m. on the afternoon of Saturday the 24th, two envoys from Muley Abbas presented themselves at the Spanish headquarters of Guad el Eas. They were the same who had often before visited us--the Governors of Tangier and the Eiff. The Prince, they said, was most desirous of a conference with O'Donnell. The General was little disposed to comply with the request. He apprehended that such an interview was not likely to lead to any more satisfactory result than the one that had taken place just a month before, on the 23d of February. He considered it unworthy of Muley Abbas, as the Emperor's brother and the Generalissimo of the Moorish forces, and of himself as the representative of Spain, to waste time in frivolous conversations. If the proposed meeting were for the purpose of bargaining about conditions, he declined it The envoys were very urgent. "I have halted here to-day," said O'Donnell at last, "to send my wounded to Tetuan and to get up ammunition. Since you press so much for an interview, this is what I will do. To-morrow, at half-past four in the morning, the diana will sound and the soldiers will get their coffee. I will wait for the Prince until six; that hour struck, I march." The envoys pressed for half an hour longer; "Wait till half-past six," they said. Why were they so anxious for so trifling a prolongation? Muley Abbas, they replied (and the answer revealed a strange and unpleasant state of things), ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Deadly Embrace is not only a well-written and thoroughly documented book but also a necessary and vital contribution to the study of the turbulent and often violent first four decades of twentieth century Spain.' -Francisco J. Romero Salvadó, Reviews in History'Sebastian Balfour's Deadly Embrace: Morocco and the Road to the Spanish Civil War is a solid piece of research following on from his last book, The End of Spanish Empire, 1898-1923 (1997)... Balfour renders fresh much familiar material, with original interpretations of figures obscured by their reputations... he offers an important interpretative revision of the bulk of the campaigns of 1924-27 against Abdel Krim and his 'Republic of the Rif', underlining the calculated use of poisonous gases... his argument is innovative and very convincing.' -Enric Ucelay-Da Cal, Times Literary SupplementDrawing on documents buried in archives for decades and interviews with war veterans, some over 100 years old, Sebastian Balfour demolishes traditional interpretations of the Spanish colonial and civil wars. Throwing fresh light on military cultures, racism, and the experience of the soldier in war, from the early twentieth century to the 1930s, he reveals the extraordinary brutality of the colonial war in Morocco and the export of that brutality to Spain in the Civil War. Above all the author exposes for the first time the story of the chemical warfare waged by Spain against Moroccans resisting the invasions of their lands.
