Book THE COMMISSIONING PLAN FOR THE SPALLATION NEUTRON SOURCE RING AND TRANSPORT LINES

Download or read book THE COMMISSIONING PLAN FOR THE SPALLATION NEUTRON SOURCE RING AND TRANSPORT LINES written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) accelerator systems will provide a 1 GeV, 1.44 MW proton beam to a liquid mercury target for neutron production. In order to satisfy the accelerator systems' portion of the Critical Decision 4 (CD-4) commissioning goal (which marks the completion of the construction phase of the project), a beam pulse with intensity greater than 1 x 1013 protons must be accumulated in the ring, extracted in a single turn and delivered to the target. A commissioning plan has been formulated for bringing into operation and establishing nominal operating conditions for the various ring and transport line subsystems as well as for establishing beam conditions and parameters which meet the commissioning goal.

Book Results of the SNS Front End Commissioning at Berkeley Lab

Download or read book Results of the SNS Front End Commissioning at Berkeley Lab written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Front-End Systems (FES) for the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) project comprise an rf-driven H[sup -] ion source, an electrostatic 2-lens LEBT, a 2.5 MeV RFQ, followed by a 14-quadrupole, 4-rebuncher MEBT including traveling-wave fast choppers. The nominal 2.5 MeV H[sup -] beam has a current of 38 mA at a repetition rate of 60 Hz and 1 ms pulse length, for a macro duty-factor of 6%, and is chopped at a rate of approximately 1 MHz with a mini duty-factor of 68%. The normalized rms beam emittance at the MEBT exit, matching the first tank of a 402.5 MHz Alvarez linac, is measured to be approximately 0.3[pi] mm mrad. Diagnostic elements include wire scanners, BPMs, fast current monitors, a slit-harp emittance device and RFQ field monitoring probes. The results of the beam commissioning and the operation of the RFQ and diagnostic instrumentation are reported. The entire FES was shut down at LBNL at the end of May 2002 and will be recommissioned at ORNL prior to installation of the drift-tube linac.

Book High power Linac for the Spallation Neutron Source

Download or read book High power Linac for the Spallation Neutron Source written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) will be the world's most intense source of neutrons for fundamental science and industrial applications. In this paper, we review the physics requirements, design, construction, installation, and first commissioning results of the 1-GeV, 1.4-MW average power RF linac for SNS. The overall project is 82% complete, with most of the linac hardware manufactured and delivered to the SNS site. Commissioning of the first drift tube linac tanks was a success. Approximately 100% of the beam was transmitted at full average current while achieving the emittance goal of less than 0.3 [pi] mm-mrad.

Book excerpt: The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) has ramped up the operational power level from a few kW to over 500 kW since initial operations nearly two years ago. As SNS approaches the design operating level of 1.44 MW, high intensity effects are encountered. Beam loss is the primary concern at the present time. Other high intensity issues of concern that addressed here include foil survival, collective effects and machine protection.

Book Design Operational Experiences and Beam Results Obtained with the SNS H Ion Source and LEBT at Berkeley Lab

Download or read book Design Operational Experiences and Beam Results Obtained with the SNS H Ion Source and LEBT at Berkeley Lab written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ion source and Low-Energy Transport (LEBT) system that will provide H− ion beams to the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS)** Front End and the accelerator chain have been developed into a mature unit that fully satisfies the operational requirements through the commissioning and early operating phases of SNS. Compared to the early R & D version, many features of the ion source have been improved, and reliable operation at 6% duty factor has been achieved producing beam currents in the 35-mA range and above. LEBT operation proved that the purely electrostatic focusing principle is well suited to inject the ion beam into the RFQ accelerator, including the steering and pre-chopping functions. This paper will discuss the latest design features of the ion source and LEBT, give performance data for the integrated system, and report on commissioning results obtained with the SNS RFQ and Medium-Energy Beam Transport (MEBT) system. Prospects for further improvements will be outlined in concluding remarks.

Book Spallation Neutron Source Operational Experience at 1 MW

Download or read book Spallation Neutron Source Operational Experience at 1 MW written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) has been operating at the MW level for about one year. Experience in beam loss control and machine activation at this power level is presented. Also experience with machine protection systems is reviewed, which is critical at this power level. One of the most challenging operational aspects of high power operation has been attaining high availability, which is also discussed. SNS is completing the power increase to 1 MW operation. The beam loss and activation levels are generally within expected levels, except the SCL - where no beam loss was predicted. Workforce dose is not excessive and beam loss is not a limitation on operational power yet. Operation at 1 MW power levels requires careful vigilance for machine protection, with redundant and multi-level layers of protection. Beam availability is quite challenging and approaching 90% availability is quite difficult.

Book Operation of the Superconducting Linac at the Spallation Neutron Source

Download or read book Operation of the Superconducting Linac at the Spallation Neutron Source written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the Spallation Neutron Source, the first fully operational pulsed superconducting linac has been active for about two years. During this period, stable beam operation at 4.4 K has been achieved with beam for repetition rates up to 15 Hz and 30 Hz at 2.1 K. At the lower temperature 60 Hz RF pulses have been also used. Full beam energy has been achieved at 15 Hz and short beam pulses. Most of the time the superconducting cavities are operated at somewhat lower gradients to improve reliability. A large amount of data has been collected on the pulsed behavior of cavities and SRF modules at various repetition rates and at various temperatures. This experience will be of great value in determining future optimizations of SNS as well in guiding in the design and operation of future pulsed superconducting linacs. This paper describes the details of the cryogenic system and RF properties of the SNS superconducting linac.

Book COMPUTATIONAL BEAM DYNAMICS STUDIES OF COLLECTIVE INSTABILITIES OBSERVED IN SNS

Download or read book COMPUTATIONAL BEAM DYNAMICS STUDIES OF COLLECTIVE INSTABILITIES OBSERVED IN SNS written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the commissioning and early operation of the Spallation Neutron Source, some physics shifts were set aside for high intensity stability studies. Under certain, especially contrived conditions, a number of beam instabilities were induced. These included both electron cloud and ring impedance driven phenomena. We are now applying both simple analytic models and the ORBIT Code to the description and simulation of these observed instabilities.
