Book Western Marxism and the Soviet Union

Download or read book Western Marxism and the Soviet Union written by Marcel van der Linden and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ‘Russian Question’ was an absolutely central problem for Marxism in the twentieth century. Numerous attempts were made to understand the nature of Soviet society. The present book tries to portray the development of these theoretical contributions since 1917 in a coherent, comprehensive appraisal. It aims to present the development of the Western Marxist critique of the Soviet Union across a rather long period in history (from 1917 to the present) and in a large region (Western Europe and North America). Within this demarcation of limits in time and space, an effort has been made to ensure completeness, by paying attention to all Marxist analyses which in some way significantly deviated from or added to the older theories.

Book Ted Grant Selected Works

Download or read book Ted Grant Selected Works written by Ted Grant and published by Marxist Books. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reissue of the first volume of Ted Grant's Selected Works marks a new stage in making his ideas more widely known to a new generation of Marxists. Stalinism may no longer be as pressing an issue as it was in the latter half of the 20th century, but it is far more than a theoretical/historical question—today’s situation is deeply impacted by the events of the past. In the post-World War II period, Marxists had to explain the phenomenon of Stalinism, which was no longer confined to the degenerated workers’ state of the USSR, but was spreading around the world. While every other leader of the Fourth International lost their bearings on this and every other fundamental question—veering to ultraleftism, opportunism, reformism, and even the extreme right—Ted stayed the course, sticking to the fundamentals of Marxism to navigate these uncharted waters. His writings on these momentous and complex events are a textbook example of how to apply the ideas of Lenin and Trotsky to the changing world around us, a “must-read” for all those who wish to master the Marxist method. By Ted Grant with an updated introduction by John Peterson.

Book Trotsky Trotskyism and the Transition to Socialism

Download or read book Trotsky Trotskyism and the Transition to Socialism written by Peter Beilharz and published by Totowa, N.J. : Barnes & Noble Books. This book was released on 1987 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trotskyists have long dominated the revolutionary tradition on the western left. This book provides a critical analysis of Trotskyism and argues that it is increasingly irrelevant as a means of achieving socialism. It argues that, as the realization grows that the revolutionary tradition and the authoritarianism which frequently results from it are wrong, the importance of the theory of the transition to socialism increases. The author states that on this point Trotskyism is weak; that Trotskyism's proposals for socialist transition are largely rhetorical and that its democratic impulse is weak. He supports this by showing that Trotsky's philosophy of history, implicit in his writings, which the author characterizes as evolutionary and automatiscist, coupled with a failure to grasp the distinctive theoretical structure of Marx's Capital, has a disabling effect on Trotsky's account of the transition to socialism and on his explanation of Stalinism.

Book Trotskyism and the Dilemma of Socialism

Download or read book Trotskyism and the Dilemma of Socialism written by Chris Z. Hobson and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1988-10-19 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by two long-time scholar/activists, this book is a detailed history of the Trotskyist movement set against the background of the Russian Revolution and the evolution of Soviet society. As the first comprehensive study of the subject in English, Trotskyism and the Dilemma of Socialism traces the ideas and activities of the Trotskyist movement over six decades and five continents. The history is paced within the context of the attempts by Trotsky and the movement to understand the nature of the evolving Soviet society, as in Trotsky's theory of the degenerated workers' state. Particularly valuable is the authors' in-depth analysis of the Soviet economy.
