Book Legal Aspects of International Drug Control

Download or read book Legal Aspects of International Drug Control written by S. K. Chatterjee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for suppressing the illicit traffic in drugs can hardly be over-emphasized. Yet, the licit uses of drugs, especially for medical and scientific needs, cannot be suppressed. Apparently, it is a ques tion of determining the vvorld requirements of drugs for such legiti mate uses, and of producing and manufacturing them accordingly. Owing to their multifarious medical uses in various parts of the world, it proves to be almost impossible to determine exactly the amount of drugs required for legitimate purposes. There is also the complicating factor that drugs are used for sociological and religious reasons, which have a long history. Not only arc the licit uses and legitimate amounts of drugs difficult to determine but also such difficulties give rise to illicit traffic in them. Yet, it is believed that a concerted international policy, coupled with national co-operation, on various facets of the related problems-namely, limitation of production and/or manufacture of drugs, restriction on cultivation of plants that may contribute to addiction-producing substances, training and rehabilitation of drug addicts, and efficient national administration-would help eradicate drug-abuse. In search of an appropriate remedy, this book has been devoted to a practical study of the problem and to exploring, in this area of international law, the relationship between the political and econ omic interests and the international economic order.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the First World War the Western great powers sought to redefine international norms according to their liberal vision. They introduced Western-led multilateral organizations to regulate cross-border flows which became pivotal in the making of an interconnected global order. In contrast to this well-studied transformation, Hirst considers in detail for the first time the responses of the defeated interwar Soviet Union and early Republican Turkey who challenged this new order with a reactive and distinctly state-led international politics. As Mustafa Kemal Atat?rk took up arms in 1920 to overturn the terms of the Paris settlement, Vladimir Lenin provided military and economic aid as part of a partnership that both sides described as anti-imperialist. Over the course of the next two decades, the Soviet and Turkish states coordinated joint measures to accelerate development in spheres ranging from aviation to linguistics. Most importantly, Soviet engineers and architects helped colleagues in Ankara launch a five-year plan and build massive state-owned factories to produce textiles and replace Western imports. Whilst the Kemalists' cooperation with the Bolsheviks has often been described as pragmatic, this book demonstrates that Moscow and Ankara actually came together in an ideological convergence rooted in anxiety about underdevelopment relative to the West, gradually arriving at statist internationalism as an alternative to Western liberal internationalism. Drawing on extensive archival research and offering an often-ignored and non-Western perspective on the history of international relations and diplomacy, Against the Liberal Order presents a novel interpretation of the international order of the interwar period that crosses the borders of historical disciplines and contributes to questions of current concern in world politics.

It emphasizes the legal aspects of NAFTA & doing business in the Americas. Coverage also includes the expansion & growth of NAFTA, & the overall impact (business, financial, economic, legal) upon the current three signatories & upon other interested countries in Latin America & elsewhere in the world. The journal is divided into three main sections: (I) Articles; (II) Implementation, covering the way that the United States, Canada, & Mexico are implementing NAFTA; & (III) Beyond NAFTA, which considers the developments occurring elsewhere in Latin & Central America, the Caribbean, & Europe. Topics of particular concern to this journal include free trade, direct investment, licensing, finance, taxation, litigation & dispute resolution, & organizational aspects of NAFTA. Besides the technical, legal pieces, the journal includes various policy oriented articles, economic pieces, & business strategy articles. NAFTA: Law & Business Review of the Americas achieves a unique balance in its coverage between practical & policy implications of NAFTA, covering both matters of immediate interest as well as those relating to reform of legal, business, economic, social, & political structures in the Western world. This approach makes it a valuable resource for both practitioners & academics in the field.
