Book excerpt: Jake Greenwood thought losing his older brother Caleb in a traffic accident was enough to change him forever. But when the driver turns up at the funeral, Jake now has a target for all the rage inside him. Because the man responsible for stealing Caleb's light from the world has no right to intrude on their grief. Jake's right about one thing--Caleb's death changes everything, but not in a way he expects. When he goes to Atlanta to collect Caleb's things, Jake's world is turned upside down as he makes a shocking discovery. Caleb had a secret. The same secret Jake is hiding from everyone who knows him. Well--almost everyone. But now he wants answers, and there's only one person who can provide them. Liam Miller knew deep down he'd get a hostile reception at Caleb's funeral--Caleb had told him more than once that a black man in that town was always going to stand out--but he can't stay away. He has to say goodbye. Caleb's family know nothing about his life in Atlanta, so maybe it's better that his secrets die with him. What he hadn't counted on was Caleb's brother Jake, turning up in Atlanta--and asking for Caleb's laptop. Because Liam has a good idea what Jake will find. Maybe it's time Jake learns he's not the only one who's hurting. Jake's not sure how it happened, but he's gained a friend, a link to Caleb's other life. What he hadn't counted on was just how much he'd come to rely on Liam--how much Jake is attracted to him. Liam can see where things are leading and he fights it. Because any way he looks at it, this is wrong. Except he's about to learn Jake is as stubborn as his brother, and then some. Suddenly they're way past the point of no return, and Liam knows in his gut they are heading for a shitstorm of epic proportions. Truth & Betrayal is a slow-burn, painful, yet inspirational story of love, loss, and coming of age that will have you crying, laughing, and rooting for two men whose romance has potential pitfalls in every direction. It's a story of grief and goodbyes, loss and restoration, discovery, firsts, lasts, and above all, a love that's bewildering, unexpected, and so very strong and true.

Book Southern Girl Meets Vegetarian Boy

Download or read book Southern Girl Meets Vegetarian Boy written by Damaris Phillips and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Being a vegetarian doesn’t have to be boring . . . Damaris truly puts the South in your mouth and let me tell ya, you’re gonna dig it.” —Guy Fieri Damaris Phillips is a southern chef in love with an ethical vegetarian. In Phillips’s household, greens were made with pork, and it wasn’t Sunday without fried chicken. So she had to transform the way she cooks. In Southern Girl Meets Vegetarian Boy, Phillips shares 100 recipes that embody the modern Southern kitchen: food that retains all its historic comfort and flavor, but can now be enjoyed by vegetarians and meat-lovers alike. The book features Phillips’s most cherished entrees from her childhood made both with and without meat: Chicken Fried Steak becomes Chicken Fried Seitan Steak. Loaded Potato and Bacon Soup is now Loaded Potato and Facon Soup. She gives down-home side dishes a makeover by removing meat, adding international spices, and updating cooking techniques, and offers soul-satisfying, irresistible desserts that triumph over the meat-eater-versus-vegetarian divide, every time. Phillips found a way to make Southern food that everyone can enjoy, wherever they are on their culinary journey. “Love for a vegetarian may have driven Damaris to write this, but it’s her love for vegetables and her knowledge of Southern cuisine that comes through on every page.” —Alton Brown “Damaris Phillips has the knowledge, the experience, and the down-right courage to take on her native Southern cooking and turn it on its head . . . vegetarians everywhere will be thrilled!” —Bobby Flay

Book The Southern Connection

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert Bechtold Heilman
  • Publisher : LSU Press
  • Release : 1991-04-01
  • ISBN : 0807156736
  • Pages : 326 pages

Download or read book The Southern Connection written by Robert Bechtold Heilman and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1991-04-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An engaging collection of essays by an astute observer of the South. In 1935, Robert Bechtold Heilman, a native Pennsylvanian and recent Harvard Ph.D., accepted a position in the Louisiana State University English department. He came to the Bayou State bringing with him a sense of curiosity in people and places a delight in the drama of life. that was compatible with the temperament of the South's still largely rural and storytelling society. He came, moreover, to one of the most dramatic contemporary settings in the South, the Louisiana of Huey P. Long. (He was present at the Louisiana State Capitol on the day Long was assassinated.) In Baton Rouge, he found a provincial university in the capital city that was acquiring for the first time in its history a faculty of some distinction. Heilman's enduring association with the South, both personally and professionally, is the focus of The Southern Connection, a collection of seventeen delightful and thought-provoking essays. The first section of the book consists of essays in which Heilman recalls Louisiana and LSU as he found them in the autumn of 1935. He describes the atmosphere at the University and in the surrounding town; offers vivid portraits of some of his colleagues, including Robert Penn Warren, Cleanth Brooks, and Eric Vogelin; and meditates on the reasons an obscure university in an impoverished southern state was able to attract and nurture a faculty of outstanding talent and achievement. Having been at LSU during the scandals of the late 1930s and the war years of the 1940s, Heilman makes a significant contribution, through his recollections, to the history of these crucial times. In the book's second section Heilman presents critical essays on a number of important southern writers and their works. There are discussions of the Agrarian movement and its connection with European culture; on Cleanth Brooks and The Well Wrought Urn; on Eudora Welty's work, especially Losing Battles; and on Katherine Anne Porter's Ship of Fools. Heilman also includes two essays on Robert Penn Warren's work. The first discusses All the King's Men as tragedy, and the second examines the moral complexities of World Enough and Time. Another essay in the group compares Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman with Eudora Welty's "The Death of a Traveling Salesman." Finally, Heilman offers two extended reflections on the South as a region and a culture. In "The South Falls In," he discusses the paradoxes in the southern character and in national perceptions of the South. In "The Southern Temper," he considers the southern "sense of the concrete" as it is reflected in the work of various southern writers and in the southern character in general. As a whole, The Southern Connection offers an enjoyable and illuminating assessment of the South by one of the most perceptive and sensitive critics of our time.
