Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern Baptist Pulpit As it is the province of the butler to serve the viands and not entertain the guests, we will not intrude on the deader a long dissertation on even so fine a dish as we are, by the graciousness of the brethren, able to provide. The intellectual and spiritual repast to which all are invited will proclaim its own excellence. The Southern Baptist Convention constitutes the largest deliberative body in the world, and though a few excellent volumes of sermons by single individuals have been published, no book representing the pulpit of the Convention has yet appeared. It was thought that such a volume would be a fitting memorial to our fiftieth anniversary as a separate organization. The book is truly representative though by no means exhaustive of the pulpit talent among us; and we believe its household value will be greatly increased by the portraits and biographical sketches of the contributors. I was comfortably settled as a full - time volunteer in my church. I had not forgotten the commitment I had made at Ridgecrest, but it was not uppermost in my mind. Then we had a revival. Dr. Charles Howard, the visiting evangelist, really touched my heart in one Of his mes sages, and I realized that I had not carried out my intent. From that point I began making plans to go to seminary. Years later, I saw Dr. Howard, and told him of the impact of his message. He hugged me and said, Thank you for telling me that. I've always thought of that revival at Seminole Heights as a major failure. You've just let me know it wasn't.
