Book The Southern African Development Community in Zimbabwe

Download or read book The Southern African Development Community in Zimbabwe written by Rich Mashimbye and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-02-13 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book narrates the unravelling of Zimbabwe, a country that was once considered an inspiration on the continent of Africa in terms of socioeconomic development. Recognising that many factors contributed to the collapse of the nation, and that this collapse was a process that occurred over a long period, it looks at historical events and processes like the colonisation of the country and dispossession of the indigenous people, and the misrule, politically-motivated violence and economic mismanagement that followed under Robert Mugabe, as the pivotal moments that precipitated the subsequent fall of Zimbabwe. The book also examines the role that the regional intergovernmental organisation, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), played in trying to help Zimbabwe overcome its security, political and economic challenges.

Book Community of Insecurity

Download or read book Community of Insecurity written by Dr Laurie Nathan and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the formation, evolution and effectiveness of the regional security arrangements of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Nathan examines a number of vital and troubling questions: ∗ why has SADC struggled to establish a viable security regime? ∗ why has it been unable to engage in successful peacemaking?, and ∗ why has it defied the optimistic prognosis in the early 1990s that it would build a security community in Southern Africa? He argues that the answers to these questions lie in the absence of common values among member states, the weakness of these states and their unwillingness to surrender sovereignty to the regional organization. Paradoxically, the challenge of building a co-operative security regime lies more at the national level than at the regional level. The author's perspective is based on a unique mix of insider access, analytical rigour and accessible theory.

Book Region Building in Southern Africa

Download or read book Region Building in Southern Africa written by Chris Saunders and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How successful have Southern African states been in dealing with the major issues that have faced the region in recent years? What could be done to produce more cohesive and effective region-building in Southern Africa? In this original and wide-ranging volume, which draws on an interdisciplinary team of mainly African and African-based specialists, the key political, socio-economic, and security challenges facing Southern Africa today are addressed. These include the various issues confronting the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and its institutions; such as HIV/AIDS, migration and xenophobia, land-grabbing and climate change; and the role of the main external actors involved with the region, including the United Nations, the European Union, the United States, and China. The book also looks at the Southern African Customs Union and Southern African Development Finance Institutions, including the Development Bank of Southern Africa and Industrial Development Corporation, and issues of gender and peacebuilding. In doing so, the book goes to the heart of analyzing the effectiveness of SADC and other regional organisation, suggesting how region-building in Southern Africa may be compared with similar attempts elsewhere in Africa and other parts of the world.

Book SADC The Southern Arrested Development Community

Download or read book SADC The Southern Arrested Development Community written by MICHAEL. AEBY and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-13 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern Africa is likely to experience more social unrest in the foreseeable future. That is one of the conclusions in this policy dialogue, which provides an overview of political and economic developments relevant to regional peace and security in Southern Africa. While the region continues to experience isolated armed conflicts, and while developmental backlogs present a major risk to regional stability in the long run, currently the most acute source of instability stems from governance deficits, which in the past decade have prompted crises in many of the member states of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). SADC's institutional framework for regional peace and security has proven ineffective because SADC leaders have prioritised national sovereignty over the enforcement of democratic principles. The institutions have little capacity as they lack material and political support. The governance deficits and SADC's lacklustre conflict management may in the long run arrest development in Southern Africa.

Book The Southern African Development Community Treaty Nexus

Download or read book The Southern African Development Community Treaty Nexus written by Korwa Gombe Adar and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-03-27 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its establishment in 1980 the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has largely been a state driven organization, with the people of Southern Africa, though enshrined in the treaty, remaining observers in the SADC democratization and integration agenda. The Southern African Development Community Treaty-Nexus: National Constitutions, Citizen’s Sovereignty, Communication, and Awareness, edited by Korwa Gombe Adar, Dorothy Mpabanga, Kebapetse Lotshwao, Thekiso Molokwane, and Norbert Musekiwa, brings in the people of Southern Africa, the key beneficiaries of the integration agenda, in the SADC democratization and integration epistemology. Using the new concepts of sadcness and sadcnization, this book operationalizes from legal, communication, and awareness perspectives, the nexus of the people of Southern Africa, democratization, and integration in the SADC region. From legal and communications lenses, the contributors argue that democratization and integration are about people (citizens), the sovereigns, and not merely the abstract actors called nation states. Using the case studies of Angola, Botswana, Madagascar, Mozambique, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, the contributors engage in this epistemology and assess, among other things, the peoples' of Southern Africa—the Southern Africa Development Community integration nexus.

Book Rethinking and Unthinking Development

Download or read book Rethinking and Unthinking Development written by Busani Mpofu and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2019-03-27 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development has remained elusive in Africa. Through theoretical contributions and case studies focusing on Southern Africa’s former white settler states, South Africa and Zimbabwe, this volume responds to the current need to rethink (and unthink) development in the region. The authors explore how Africa can adapt Western development models suited to its political, economic, social and cultural circumstances, while rejecting development practices and discourses based on exploitative capitalist and colonial tendencies. Beyond the legacies of colonialism, the volume also explores other factors impacting development, including regional politics, corruption, poor policies on empowerment and indigenization, and socio-economic and cultural barriers.

Book The Southern African Development Community SADC and the European Union EU

Download or read book The Southern African Development Community SADC and the European Union EU written by Johannes Muntschick and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-09 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores regionalism in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and highlights the influence of the European Union (EU) as an extra-regional actor on the organization and integration process. The analysis is guided by theory and explains the emergence, institutional design and performance of SADC’s major integration projects in the issue areas of the economy, security and infrastructure. It provides in this way a profound assessment of the organization as a whole. The study shows that South Africa plays a regional key role as driver for integration while external influence of the EU is ambivalent in character because it unfolds a supportive or obstructive impact. The author argues that the EU gains influence over regional integration processes in the SADC on the basis of patterns of asymmetric interdependence and becomes a ‘game-changer’ insofar as it facilitates or impedes solutions to regional cooperation problems.
