  • Pages : 80 pages

Download or read book The Hull Barnsley Railway written by Stephen Chapman and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrated with photographs, this is a survey of the Hull and Barnsley railway system. It includes pictures of the lines and depots in the Hull area, the Wath and Denaby branches and the joint line with the Great Central Railway to Doncaster, as well as the main line from Hull Alexandra Dock to Cudworth and Stairfoot, on the edge of Barnsley. The book turns the clock back to the 1950s when the Hull and Barnsley line was still busy with heavy goods and mineral trains. It recalls the 1960s when it was still business as usual on the western half of the system even though the main line had been cut in half by closure, and when local trip workings still plied their trade along the remaining lines around Hull. Track layouts, operating instructions and personal reminiscences are included.

Book The World s First Railway System

Download or read book The World s First Railway System written by Mark Casson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British railway network was a monument to Victorian private enterprise. Its masterpieces of civil engineering were emulated around the world. But its performance was controversial: praised for promoting a high density of lines, it was also criticised for wasteful duplication of routes. This is the first history of the British railway system written from a modern economic perspective. It uses conterfactual analysis to construct an alternaive network to represent the most efficient alternative rail network that could have been constructed given what was known at the time - the first time this has been done. It reveals how weaknesses in regulation and defects in government policy resulted in enormous inefficiency in the Victorian system that Britain lives with today. British railway companies developed into powerful regional monopolies, which then contested each other's territories. When denied access to existing lines in rival territories, they built duplicate lines instead. Plans for an integrated national system, sponsored by William Gladstone, were blocked by Members of Parliament because of a perceived conflict with the local interests they represented. Each town wanted more railways than its neighbours, and so too many lines were built. The costs of these surplus lines led ultimately to higher fares and freight charges, which impaired the performance of the economy. The book will be the definitive source of reference for those interested in the economic history of the British railway system. It makes use of a major new historical source, deposited railway plans, integrates transport and local history through its regional analysis of the railway system, and provides a comprehensive, classified bibliography.

Book The Great Central Railway

Download or read book The Great Central Railway written by John Palmer and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2021-01-30 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Sets out to address what really happened . . . through its LNER days and into British Railways custodianship . . . A well-researched and presented tome.” —Key Model World For generations of railway enthusiasts and more lately for social historians, the life and times of the former Great Central Railway and in particular its extension towards London in the 1890s and closure seventy years later, have generated considerable interest and controversy. Although many books have been written about the Railway, the majority in recent times have concentrated upon providing a photographic record and a nostalgic look in retrospect to what was generally perceived as happier times for the route. None of the books have presented the outcome from thorough research into the business aspects of the Railway and its successive private (LNER) and public (BR) ownerships through war and peace, and times of industrial, social and political change, that influenced and shaped the demand for a railway service. While retaining a strong railway theme throughout, the book identifies the role played by successive governments, the electricity and coal industries and the effect of social change that, together resulted in a case for closure. The content of the book replaces much supposition with fact and places on record what really happened. The final part of the book acknowledges the fine work over half a century of volunteers dedicated to saving a section of the line in Leicestershire. “A valuable addition to the social and political history of railways.” —The Railway Correspondence and Travel Society

Book Directory of the Railway Companies of Great Britain

Download or read book Directory of the Railway Companies of Great Britain written by Donald J. Grant and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Directory of British Railway Companies of Great Britain is a record of all the companies who sought to build a railway in Great Britain, both successful and unsuccessful. The Directory contains a full list of every company that obtained an Act of Parliament for the construction of a railway. If a railway was built without an Act of Parliament and played a part in the greater picture of Great Britain’s railway system, it is also included, which gives a fascinating glimpse into Great Britain’s colourful public transportation history. Readers will learn about each railway’s origin, opening, route, gauge and growth and its amalgamation with others, and find out which grouping company it finally ended up in. In an interesting additional section, the routes that unfinished railways and railways that never came to fruition would have taken are also included. The Directory of British Railway Companies of Great Britain has been meticulously researched, and as a result includes all railways, built or not, in the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands and Scottish Islands. Also included are brief descriptions of the most pertinent Acts relating to railways in Great Britain, providing readers with an insight into the complicated legal processes involved in the creation of a railway. The Directory of British Railway Companies of Great Britain is an all-in-one, easy to access and invaluable reference source. It will appeal to historians and transportation enthusiasts alike, as well as those who have always wondered how Great Britain’s railways came to be.
